Pixie Dust, Monday [4/28]

Either the gods were feeling generous, or Tink had been ordering while looped on absinthe again, because Romeo entered Pixie Dust on Monday to find a giant crate of dress-up clothes just inside the entrance.

The two little girls with him were ecstatic. Romeo ... was very grateful his coffee was caffeinated again.

He set up a small play area in the front of the store while Payido and Seraphina transformed themselves into beautiful ballerina princesses, Seraphina in pink, Payido in blinding electric yellow.

He was perhaps less surprised then he might have been when Seraphina solemnly added a toy holster to this costume.

Pixie Dust was open.

All the usual Pixie Dust features ... plus dress-up clothes for the kids.

His attention may be slightly split, today.

And get an A from Kerrigan.

River assumed Kerrigan would give her a good grade, but stealing alcohol from the pixie seemed like a good idea anyway. Besides, Will needed to learn the ways of criminals, as he had learnt them on Serenity.

Suddenly a telepathic child seemed useful.

The evil pixie stole grandma Kerrigan's caffeine, so we're stealing the evil pixie's alcoholic beverages, she explained.

Will looked excited at stared wide-eyed around the shop. The girls made him curious, but they were girls. He made the toy viper fly around his head in a circle, hoping mommy knew how to do this.

Mommy had a plan. You provide distraction. Most people found children cute and interesting. Make the girls cry.

Will looked uncertain. Not that he would admit it but the girls were kind of scary. "Mommy?" He waved the viper around.

River nodded encouragingly. Grandma Kerrigan will be proud of you.

Seely would never think of using his child to help him secure a grade.

So obviously the boy in the cap sneaking in the direction of the booze stash was an optical illusion.

Seely, meanwhile, was totally not playing lookout for RJ while he sneaked.

He was looking for a new shirt, yes.

"The distraction worked, and Romeo barely registered RJ's approach as he went over to talk to Seely.

"Is there anything I can show you?"

"Shirts," Seely said, looking around the store for any that would have RJ out of Romeo's eyeline. "Like those. Over there."

While Seely was talking, RJ sneaked like a sneaking thing for all he was worth.

Romeo gave Seely a confused look. The customer was always right, and it wasn't that he was judging, but ... "That's the women's winter clearance rack. Men's clothes are all on this side." He gestured closer to the register.

He was still oblivious to RJ, but Seraphina was not, and she wandered over to him, staring at him with big green eyes. "Hello."

"Well, yes, but that's because I'm looking for women's shirts...for my girlfriend...who is a woman."

Much like his father, RJ was resisting the urge to flail. "Hi," he managed in a whisper before inspiration struck. "Wanna play a game?"

Romeo should have guessed that. "What is her style like?" he wanted to know. "Because we have this, and this, and ... these have been selling well."

As he pointed to various things on the sales rack, Seraphina sucked on her fingers in thought for a moment, then nodded enthusiastically. Games people whispered to you about were usually lots of fun. "What kinda game?"

"She's very fond of pink," Seely told Romeo. "And frills." Since they seemed to be towards the back.

"A sneaky game," RJ whispered. "You have to fetch the bottles without making noise or getting caught."

There was, as it happened, a rack of hideous pink, frilly blouses near the back of the store, out of sight of the counter. He'd been trying to get rid of them for months. "Of course," Romeo said pleasantly. "This one has sequins as well."

Meanwhile, Seraphina was thinking about this. She knelt to look at the bottles. "They look heavy," she whispered.

"Great, she loves sequins."

"That's why we have to be extra careful," RJ explained, shrugging out of his jacket so they'd have something to carry the bottles in. "Otherwise they'll fall and make too much noise."

RJ wasn't allowed to ask his younger siblings if they wanted to play games anymore, no.

"What size do you think?" Romeo asked.

Seraphina thought about this, blinked, and then grinned. "Sneaky!" she said, delighted. "I'll get the little ones." She was, in fact, gathering up a fistful of airline miniatures.

"Not too big," Seely said. "Except around the, you know, bust."

"Good idea," RJ whispered, carefully placing a couple of bottles filled with green on the jacket. "Not all of them though, we want other kids to be able to play too."

Romeo was getting a rather skewed mental image of Aravis, and he produced a corset-style pink top with sequins and frills. "Perhaps this? it will adjust around the bosom."

"Just a few," Seraphina agreed, placing her treasures in RJ's jacket. Emboldened, she reached for one especially tempting larger bottle -- and promptly knocked it to the floor.

"Ooops!"

"Perfect!" Seely declared, just as the bottle hit the floor.

"Run," RJ hissed, quickly tying up the edges of the jacket and preparing to bolt.

"What the devil -" Romeo exclaimed, walking quickly to the front of the store, Seely forgotten.

Seraphina had rather enjoyed the noise the crashing bottle made, so she was knocking more off the shelves and ignoring RJ's instruction to run and splashing around in the spilling puddles.

"Play with me, Papa," she implored, and Romeo's efforts to get her away from the glass and alcohol probably gave the boy in the cap more than enough time to flee.

RJ wisely fled like a fleeing thing.

As did Seely.

He left some money for the shirt though.

Payido is trying to teach her sister al Bhed.

Seraphina is kind of paying attention, but mostly humming to herself and twirling to make her tutu stand out.

Either of them would love another playmate.

A little nervously Will approached the girls. "I have a viper," he announced, waving the toy. "You don't."

Seraphina shrugged at this information and went back to her twirling, but Payido (happy to see someone closer to her own age) bounced over in a tutu and fireman's cap. "Cooooooool, can I play with it?"

Will hesitated for a moment. "No," he said, and then seeing the other girl twirl, he began to spin around wildly. Mom had taught him to dance, after all, insisting it was important for pilots.

Seraphina clapped her hands in glee and started spinning next to Will. It was like they were dancing together like big people!

Payido, meanwhile, was working on a pout. "Why noooooot?"

"Mine!" He threw a glance at his mommy, who nodded encouraginly, then attempted to grab the fireman's cap. Hopefully grandma Kerrigan would be proud.

"MINE!" Payido screeched, hands going to her head to keep the hat on. She kicked at Will's legs just to make her point. "DADDY! The mean boy tried to grab my haaaaaat."

Not sure what was going on, but upset by the chaos, Seraphina started to sob.

Romeo rushed over at the sound of his daughters' cries. "It's all right, darlings," he told them, reaching down to scoop up Seraphina and trying to pat Payido on the shoulder at the same time.

He was also glaring with all his might at Will. "What is going on here?"

Will blinked and glanced nervously at mommy, before looking up at the grown up person and saying: Bentiansheng de yi dui rou.

Then his courage failed him and he burst out crying.

River tried to sneak a bottle of absinthe down her bag before running over to Will. She knelt down in front of him, giving him a concerned look. Well done!

Romeo failed to notice anything River may have been doing near the absinthe; his attention was entirely on trying to soothe the girls.

"Is he yours?" he asked River, glare not fully dissipated. "He seems to have upset the girls."

"We were dancing and he had a Viper and he wouldn't shaaaaare, daddy, and then he tried to take my hat," Payido explained indignantly, adjusting said cap on her head with a firm hand. She was glaring, too.

"The viper is extremely treasured," River clarified, taking Will's hands. "But he likes dancing."

Will looked confused and unsure what to do.

"Like his mother," Romeo nodded, glare falling away. He remembered what it was like to be asked to share a beloved possession.

Slowly, he put down the younger girl, while Payido watched sulkily. "No one is bleeding, at least, so let's call it all good."

"I like dancing too," Seraphina said softly.

River smiled at Will. Can stay and dance if you want or leave.

The boy took a step back and began spinning around again, making the toy ship fly through the air.

Since it was getting to be mid-afternoon and lunch time, Dōjima arrived with Kazuki and Riina, and a bag full of peanut butter sandwiches.

Hopefully none of the kids were allergic to peanuts.

"Ohaiyo! We come bearing lunch!"

"Oh thank heavens," was Romeo's less-than-diplomatic response as he exited the store bathroom, where he had been trying to wash Seraphina down so she smelled less like a distillery. She was now as clean as she would get, and dressed in a belted t-shirt that looked like a long dress on her.

"We had a rather interesting morning," he explained, and would have kissed Yurika had he not remembered three of the four children there might find that distinctly odd. "Someone wanted to play with Ms. Bells' shiny bottles."

Seraphina, at least, seemed to have no problem with peanut butter, as she dug into the bag with both hands.

"Well, they are nice and shiny," she mused, still balancing a slightly-napping Kaz on one hip. Riina had already abandoned her in favor of food. "I don't blame her at all."

"Sounds like you three have had a busy day! Luckily, my two helpers here and I made sandwiches, and we happened to make a few too many. So, we thought we would come over and share."

"I was playing with the big boy," Seraphina quietly announced, around a mouthful of sandwich, but it might have gone unnoticed as she was mostly talking to the sandwich.

"What excellent helpers!" Romeo beamed, then leaned to plant a kiss on Kaz's forehead. He figured his chances of getting away with it were best when the boy was half-asleep. "Thank you so much for bringing them over. It's always a problem when you have extra sandwiches to dispose of, but I think it's one we can solve."

Sandwich in hand, Payido had taken a seat next to Riina, and was now trying to teach her Al Bhed.

Kaz made a sleepy sound against Dōjima's shoulder, and she rubbed his back. "Yes, well, you can say that, but you aren't the one who had to get the peanut butter out of Riina's hair."

Romeo made a face. "I don't even know how you would do that," he admitted. "Oil? And how," he added with a skeptical look at his son, "did she get peanut butter in her hair to start with?"

"It was an accident!" Riina protested, looking up from where she was playing language-swap with Payido. "I didn't mean to not catch it!"

It was probably best not to ask what she was teaching her sister.

"Someone was trying to juggle open-face sandwiches," Dōjima explained dryly. "It was not a success."

"They'd be rather squishy," Romeo said, frowning.

He would have to ask Yurika later if she was positive the redhead was related to her.

I think the AU kidlets stole my brain.
