Trooper Station, Monday

There were a lot of kids running around town this past weekend.

Renee counted herself among the lucky few childless and avoiding the general amount of chaos they seemed to bring with them. And she had coffee.

Oh yeah, life was good.

"Good morning, Detective," Dale said as he breezed into the office in his usual cheerful mood. "I take it by the lack of children in the office that you did not have any surprises this weekend?"

"Really?" Dale said tilting his head. "I think you'd make an excellent mother."

"Not any of mine," Dale replied cheerfully. "Though I did meet our Sheriff's possible son and a young lady needed some help finding her mother. Quite and an eventful weekend."

"Given my history," Dale said with just a trace of bitterness, "I highly doubt that's going to happen. Plus an FBI agent's life tended to eliminate the traditional family lifestyle."

"Never say never," Dale said with a grin. "I'm betting some day you'll have a tough as nails little girl following you around asking to have a faceless mask to wear."

"Sorry," Dale said, "I thought it was kind of cute."

Dale looked over at Renee for a moment or two and then studied his paperwork. "You know, Detective, you have many fine qualities. Your curiosity. Your determination. Your need to make the world a better place. All very admirable."

"I do," Dale said with a grin. "It's called professional respect."

"Have you ever known me to say something just to get on your good side?" Dale asked looking up from his paperwork.

Dale grinned and went back to his paperwork. "Good. Just checking."
