Wellspring Arms and Meditation Center, Friday

Friday! It was Friday, and they were in France, and Rikku was at work with all of the awesome guns, and she'd get to see the baby, and yesterday she blew things up and then got to fly.

Rikku was in an awesome mood, and the Wellspring Arms and Meditation Center was totally open.

"You're in a good mood," Cable commented, entering the store with baby lying firmly on his arm.

"I am," she beamed. "Summer term rocks. Ooooooh, hello, little one! Hi!"

This required bouncing and waving to her. Obviously.

"Thriving," Cable replied. He was going to take the baby's random arm flail as some kind of greeting to Rikku in return. "I've gotten the new employee broken in."

"Thriving is good," she said, giggling at the wave. So cute. So, so cute. She had to stick her tongue out and see if that got a grin. "Ooooh. Showed her all the good stuff? No letting people use the firing range, don't actually sell the weapons, and so on?"

"And defend the baby at all costs," he finished, smoothly, and with not even the slightest scrap of humor. "The 'good stuff'."

"Right, totally," she said quickly, and then frowned. "Wait. What? She's ...."

She stiffened. ".... She's in danger." It wasn't a question. Was she stupid? How had she not pieced that together yet?

He shot her a look that was, if nothing else, underscored with slight amusement that lined the seriousness. "I'm the only one who can protect her."

Okay. Time to ask a couple of questions she really hadn't wanted to.

"Are her parents dead?"

If not, are they the ones looking for her?

If so ... she didn't even want to think that one, yet.

Cable regarded her impassively. "Yes," he said, simply. "Considering the circumstances, they never had a chance."

"The circumstances?" She looked at him for a long moment. "Did they try to stop someone from taking her? Either to hurt her or ..."

Rikku stared at the girl again, and remembered what she'd felt for Ruba. Payido. Bayla.

"Or to protect her?"

Here, we can guard her better than you can, and if you disagree, well, this is important, and you aren't.

"My species went through somewhat of an... event," Cable said, frankly, pressing two fingers to the baby's forehead. "We nearly went completely extinct. She was the first in-- a long time."

And tilted his head. "Everyone found out; everyone had an agenda."

Romeo came in still munching on some of the pie he'd gotten from Worf.

He may have taken rather too much.

"Hi, Rikku."

"Hiya!" she said, waving. "Ooooooh, pie! Is it good? How are you? Dude, my classes rule."

Rikku: hyper.

"Worf made it," Romeo said carefully. "But it wasn't bad."

"I'm well enough." By which he meant he'd spent vast chunks of the last week brooding and had almost managed to convince himself to get over it. "How are you? And is Reno back to himself?"

"He is," she said, bouncing on her toes. "Which is a serious relief, even though it was kinda funny making his head pop off and taking pictures."

Rikku was, possibly, an evil girlfriend.

"And you're back, did everything go okay? I mean ..." She hadn't heard the full story of why he'd gone, even, but she knew it was Bad and related to His Past, which kinda reinforced the Bad thing.

He knew what she meant, and it got a tired smile.

"I suppose," he said. "Apparently I had a claim on Juliet's estate. I gave it up, and got permission to return to Verona in exchange."

"My family is encouraging me not to take advantage of it." Though he said that quietly, it was clear it saddened him.

"So ... you can go back? I mean without being ... you're not banished, right?" She frowned. "But ... that's good news, isn't it? Or is that bad? Did you need the money, or something of hers that was important, in the estate and you had to lose it?"

"I don't care one way or the other about the money, so not being banished is the good news," Romeo said, looking at his hands. "The bad would be the bit where my father all but told me to stay out of town until they are certain it is safe for me. Which may be never."

"Oh, ouch," Rikku said, wincing. "He's ... he's just worried about you, right? I mean ... he doesn't want you getting hurt? If it's not ... safe, for you, back home?"

"That is the theory, though I can take care of myself," Romeo sulked. "And it may never be safe for me, not until all who knew me are old or gone. Tybalt had a lot of friends."
