The York Gallery, Saturday [5/24]

Being his first day on a new job, Kevin thought that it would be a good idea to take some time and get to know exactly what it was they were selling. He spent some time walking through the exhibit, carefully looking at each piece. He didn't really see the appeal, but it was expensive stuff, so he figured it was good. Every so ofter, he would glance around to make sure no one was looking, reach out and touch a sculpted butt or boob, and giggle quietly to himself.

This job wasn't so bad, he decided, even if he did have to wear a shirt all the time. He had gone with the doubled up polo today, hoping to impress his new boss.

The York Gallery was open!

Kevin wasn't exactly sure what he was allowed to do while at work, so he was mostly just kind of staring at the front door, looking vacant.

Toby entered the gallery quickly, evading the rain. He shook his soaked locks and peeled off the overly saturated shirt, leaving his chest glistening with raindrops.

Kevin looked his boyfriend over and bit his lip. "Wet outside?" he asked.

"You wouldn't believe the rain," Toby said, running his hands over his chest to dry himself. It wasn't really working. "So this is the new job, huh?"

"Yep." Kevin looked around with a grin, obviously proud. "Do you want to check out the art? You can touch it. I won't tell on you."

"Thanks, but I just stopped in to bring you some lunch," Toby said, holding up a rather damp plastic bag of food. "For my working man."

"Hey thanks, Toby!" Kevin walked over to his boyfriend and ran a hand down his wet and glistening chest.

"If you have time, I could show you the back room."

"You won't get in trouble?" Toby asked, closing his eyes at Kevin's touch.

"Oh, yeah. I might," Kevin replied, looking crestfallen. "I should probably try to not get fired on my first day, right?"

"If you do, I can always support us both," Toby offered, covering Kevin's hand with his own.

Kevin jerked his hand away. "Dude! You know how I feel about that." He shook his head. "I can take care of myself. I don't need you to make me your boy."

"Come on, Kev," Toby pleaded. "You know I just want to help. You don't have to get all bitchy about it."

"I'm not getting bitchy!" He so hated it when Toby said stuff like that.

Kevin turned to leave, then he remembered that he was working here, so he turned back around, making a smart little circle and stomping his foot when he was facing Toby again. "I think you should leave."

He really hoped he wouldn't take the lunch with him though.

Toby couldn't believe Kevin was asking him to leave. A single, perfect tear streaked down his cheek.

"Fine," He turned on his heel tossing his wet shirt over his shoulder and stalked out the door.

Kevin took a tentative step towards Toby as he was walking away, his hand reaching out to grab at the empty air where his boyfriend had been a moment before.

Kevin looked like he might be sick, even though he was really okay.

Breaking up sucked.

Although she was almost afraid to do so, Charlotte made some time before her business meeting that evening to come down to the gallery and check up on the new employee. "Settling in okay, Kevin?" she asked, pleasantly enough, although behind her smile she was wondering what the deal was with the doubling up of shirts and privately hoped that he wasn't exhausting his entire supply of nicer ones in one fell swoop.

"Everything's great!" he replied with a smile, reaching up to make sure both his collars were popped out nicely.

"Not many customers today. Is that usual?"

Charlotte had to ball up her hands a little bit; the itching desire to just...reach over and put those collars down was strong. Did he realize they were up like that? How could he not, when he'd just touched them? They were going to drive her nuts.

Due to the restraint, her smile wasn't quite as genuine as she would have liked. "It is. I told you it was a fairly easy job. We get most of our traffic during the openings, and it isn't like a lot of people wake up in the morning and think to themselves, 'You know what? I think I'd like to lay down about twenty five thousand on a statue today.'"

Unfortunately.

Kevin snorted. "Yeah, I'm sure most people have better things to do with their money." He was pretty sure he could survive several years off of twenty five grand back in Dante's Cove.

"Although," Charlotte said, nodding toward the gallery, "if someone does come in and is interest in a purchase? See how that center piece has the red dot on the tag? That meaons it has been sold, so, see, some people do by them, and you'll want to put one on the tag if someone's interest. Mostly, though, if anyone comes in, it's usually just to look."

Kevin nodded. "Red dot. Got it." He should probably ask where the red dots were kept, but then again, looking for them would give him something to do later.

"So..." Charlotte looked around and gave Kevin a light smile again, forcing down another urge to fix that damn collar. "Any other questions? Problems? You're sure everything's going okay?"

His face screwed up just a touch as he thought about the fight he had had with Toby. "I'm fine," he replied, figuring Charlotte was probably the type that wouldn't approve of him bringing his outside baggage into work.

"So, um, if someone does buy something, do I just take their contact information and let you deal with the money? Or should I get the cash and just stick it somewhere for you to take of later?" He hadn't noticed a register.

Because you put a quarter of a million in a register. Charlotte nodded. "That's right. There are cards on the desk there with all the information that a prospective buyer will need regarding to any payments."

"Got it," he replied. He was so going to rock at this job. "Until then, I guess I'll just make sure none of the statues come to life and run away." He laughed, because it was a legitimate fear he had and he was trying to make light of it.

Charlotte frowned, mostly in her forehead. "Ohhh, don't say something like that! Around here, I wouldn't be surprised if that did happen, and then I'd have a real interesting time trying to explain to the artist why all of his pieces are gone without the money to back it up!"

Kevin's eyes went wide. He so didn't need Charlotte enforcing his secret fear of animated statue attack. Some of those sculptures were downright freaky looking.

"Yeah, that would be awkward," he agreed. "I would do my best to keep them corralled though," he fake promised. Actually, he would run away very fast, probably screaming, maybe crying, and doing his best not to wet himself.

Kevin tried not to look over at the sculptures too often. In the back of his mind, he wasn't sure they wouldn't spring to life and attack him.
