The Perk, Saturday Morning

After an early morning walk into France, Mohinder stopped by The Perk for a coffee or three. He sat at a corner table with an open newspaper spread out in front of him. A cup of hot, black coffee that needed both of his hands held most of his attention.

The rest of it. Occupied by that display of chocolate muffins. It was practically breakfast, right?

G'Kar stepped in, shaking some of the water from his jacket. He got a cup of espresso from one of the clerks and spotted Mohinder nearby.

"Morning," he greeted. "Dreadful weather. Does it always rain in this particular locale?"

"I haven't been a frequent visitor to these parts," replied Mohinder, taking a sip of his coffee. "But I think it's usually worse. We are here in summer, after all."

"Worse?" he scowled a little. "As interesting as this place seems, I will be glad once the island returns to its normal home." or the next random country. whee! "I am not used to being this wet."

Mohinder couldn't help but grin, having missed the showers earlier. "Then I don't think you'd like monsoon season back home. The weather is even more..." He settled on a word while his mun hopes for Sri Lanka at some point. "...extreme. Have you had the chance to see much of our new home?"

"Not yet. I have been meaning to visit there, but the weather has not made me eager to venture out much. My home world is more of a desert. made that way by the Centauri I am not much accustomed to this type of environment."

"I understand the abbey is quite beautiful, if the Normandy beaches are less obviously so," said Mohinder. "And there's a number of multi-lingual people, if speaking French would be a problem."

"Your entire planet?" Mohinder asked, suprised. "Wouldn't that be an unstable ecosystem?"

"I had heard about the abbey. And I am most curious about this structure which so closely mirrors our very own."

He scowled a little. "Unfortunately, you are correct. My people, with the aid of a few other races, have been trying to rebuild it. It will take some time."

Mohinder nodded. "Perhaps a visit sooner rather than later? It would be awkward if you were stranded when the island moves on."

"It sounds a very ambitious project," remarked Mohinder, quietly. "What do you think of its chances?"

"Yes, that would likely be very problematic," he agreed.

He sighed a bit. "Honestly, I am not certain. Our planet has been through much. Though there are great advances being made in planetary evolution," he shook his head a bit, "sometimes there is only so much that can be done."

"We were in Greece for two weeks," said Mohinder. "There's time enough to become full of French wine and cheeses."

"Is it vital?" Mohinder asked, treading carefully with his words. "Or, if it comes to it, is there somewhere else to go?"

He smirked a litte. "I suppose there is that. Also plenty of time to stock up on such things."

"It is our home world, so it is rather vital. We used to have colonies that would've provided us with other options, but they are no more." He frowned a bit. "I'm sure some of the other races would open their homes to us if the inevitable occurs. But it would not be the same."

"Perhaps," said Mohinder, smiling. "Though I don't think I know one grape from another, I've enjoyed drinking them."

"Then I hope your home is restored." Mohinder tilted up his cup in salute. "However long it may take."

"I do not either. But I'm sure I'll enjoy them just as much."

"Thank you," he lifted his own cup in response. "That is most appreciated."

"Almost as much as coffee," replied Mohinder, his eyes drifting to his cup as he snagged a bun from the table. "Luckily, I don't have to choose between them."

G'Kar laughed. "Possibly. It seems that espresso is more of what I'm used to. The Narn equivalent seems much stronger. Pastries, however," he smirked, "are always welcome."

"I'm glad that the universe at large appreciates sweet desserts," Mohinder said around a mouthful, as he pushed the moddable plate of baked goods towards G'Kar. "The world would be a sadder place without them."

G'Kar plucked off a blueberry muffin, smirking. "I suspect it would. Perhaps if those in power got together and discussed the revolutionary power of sweets, there would be less need for conflict."

"Hopefully," said Mohinder, cheerfully. "As long as we avoid the conflicts over white chocolate or dark, stealth attacks by rogue confectioners and the bitter rivalry between hard and soft centres."
