Wellspring Arms & Meditation Center, Thursday

Janice rested in her crib but a foot away. Tether was resting at his feet. And the progress on his latest piece of work was coming along. In fact, he only had to work a few more wires into this thing...

The sign read Open, and so was the store. It was even exceptionally clean, at that.

He's here and ready to help you. Mostly.

Worf entered Wellspring and nodded to Cable in greeting."Good Morning. Meditation room?"

"It's free," Cable replied, with a nod. "Morning, Worf."

"Your child is well?" Worf asked.

"Breathing and getting closer to handling the utensils," Cable replied, with an exceptionally earnest expression.

"Very admirable," Worf replied. "Soon she will begin to speak and after that you can start to train her for the battles ahead in her life."

"She already has the right priorities." A slight twitch at the side of his mouth; it wasn't really a smile. "Food comes first."

"Very wise," Worf replied after pausing for a moment to consider it. "Good to see both of you."

And then he nodded again and headed to the meditation room.

Rikku bounced into the shop, early, before either of her afternoon classes.

"Hiya!" she said, and then she leaned over to wave separately at Janice. "Hiiiiii there to you, too."

"Morning, Rikku," Cable replied, offering her a nod to complete the greeting.

Janice, for her part, managed to burble a little.

"Look at you, so big," she sighed. Cable was going to have to wait a minute while Rikku leaned forward to boop Janice on the nose. "Who's so big? Who's got big eyes? You have such big eyes."

Managing to communicate some amusement through his eyebrows, Cable was just... going to give the two a moment.

Janice appeared to be increasing the size of her eyes tenfold; she smiled big.

Rikku laughed, unable to hold it in, and instinctively reached out. She stopped herself abruptly and blushed.

"Sorry. I. Uh." She glanced up at Cable uncertainly, and couldn't resist blurting the rest out. "Can I ... hold her?"

He mentally debated the pros and cons of letting the baby go for even a moment, then came up with a tentative yes.

As long as he could keep an eye on her. "Sure," Cable replied, passing the baby over as carefully as he could, his eyes trained on her all the while.

Rikku reached out hesitantly, watching both Cable and Janice for signs of hesitation. Some times little ones didn't like being held by someone new, and she knew this was a big request for Cable as it was.

"Hi," she said softly, settling Janice into her arms and cradling her.

Janice made a few noises, squirming a little before she caught Rikku's eyes. Or the ceiling. Either of them.

Cable? Cable was totally not counting any seconds, or anything.

"Such pretty green eyes," Rikku said. "You could almost be Al Bhed, you know."

Her pupils were large dots and not spirals, which kinda killed that. Probably for the best. The last thing the baby needed was more reason for people to be against her.

She leaned over to press a soft kiss to Janice's forehead -- amazing how baby's had that fresh, clean scent to them -- and carefully held her back to Cable.

Because when new parents gave you that nervous DO NOT DROP MY BABY look, that always meant you should hold the kid for as short a time as possible and save them the heart attack.

He wasn't going to have a heart attack. Nope. He was, however, going to take the baby, and maybe cling to her a little more. Out of defense. You never knew when someone was going to crash into the store and start shooting.

"She's thankful for the compliment," he deadpanned.

"She's very welcome," Rikku smiled. It was always kinda cute watching the parents cling again, really. "Uh. I wanted to ask you something and you can totally say no. It's just. Do you know if ... I can swap shifts with someone? Just for this week, not permanently or anything?"

"Any particular reason?" he asked, taking a moment to get Janice settled back where she belonged. There. Now h-- she could calm down. Mentally, he made an inventory of employees...

...sometimes it helped to have the kind that weren't students.

"It was my birthday yesterday," she said, lifting a shoulder. "A friend booked us a spa day, for tomorrow, but I can't go if I have work. If it's important, I mean, I can stick around and just reschedule the other thing. I just thought, if it didn't matter, it might be nice, you know?"

Well, he did apparently need to do more for employee appreciation... and it would be good for Rikku, considering the circumstances back home.

Cable glanced down at the baby, then back up at Rikku. "Make sure you try the hot stone," he said, easily.

Some days, his aching back missed Providence a little.

"Really?" she said, bouncing on her toes. "Thank you! I'll totally owe you one and I'll ... something! Do extra paperwork, um, if there's paperwork to do or whatever and. Thank you."

He was totally the best boss ever, right now, and yay, spa day!

"No problem," Cable replied, sitting back. Now he'd just have to break the news to Kerrigan. "You'll be taking the Saturday shift."

"Yes, sir," she said, saluting. "I'll be here bright and early."
