Thursday Evening: Ching Tai

Ron was standing outside Ching Tai and doing his best not to nervously fidget as he waited for Mac to join him. She did say Thursday, right? And this was the only Chinese restaurant on the island.

Or were they supposed to meet over at a restaurant over at Bali Hai and he completely misheard her? Ching Tai? Bali Hai? The last bit rhymed. Was that it?

Of course if he left now for Bali Hai then he'd have no way to know if she showed up here because he was right and this was the place to meet to begin with.

Hopefully Mac would show up soon so the internal flailing of Weasley wouldn't cause him to explode on the spot.

As it turned out, she did. For which the owners of Ching Tai would probably be very grateful.

"Hey," she greeted him with a smile as she made her way up. "Ready for the expansion of culinary horizons?"

Ron tried not to show his utter relief by trying to play it cool.

"Oh, sure," he said with a nod. "Absolutely. Horizons ready to be expanded. Culinary wise."

"Awesome." She jerked her head lightly towards the restaurant. "Then why don't we go on in."

"Sure!" Ron said and floundered slightly as he opened the door and gestured for Mac to enter first. "After you."

Mac did as she was gestured, shooting him a bemused smile.

"I warn you, I don't really know the non-vegetarian side of the menu," she said. "Except in a very vague sort of way, anyway."

"Well, I'm an adventurous sort," Ron said trying to maintain the composure of one who is actually adventurous instead of one who is usually dragged into adventurous situations. "I think I might be able to take my chances. Did you tell me you were a vegetarian?"

"Don't think so..." Mac replied. "I used to be vegan, but I'm growing out of that thanks inconsistent canon."

"I went through a rebellious stage."

"Eating vegetables is rebellious?" Ron asked. "You'd be my mum's favorite child."

"It drove my mom crazy," Mac told him. "We're a very meat and potatoes kind of a family... except me, apparently."

"Well I could see that," Ron said taking a seat at one of the open tables. "So... was it to drive your mom crazy or because you just didn't want to eat meat?"

"Bit of both." Mac shrugged, settling in opposite him. "I'm.. really different from them, and liked to keep that as obvious as possible."

"That was just another way to do that."

"Nothing wrong with being different," Ron said with a grin. "Though if you were to look at any of my family you'd be able to tell we're related off the bat. You can't mistake us for not being Weasleys."

Then he smirked.

"Though there are days I wish I wasn't."

"Wasn't related to them, or didn't look like them?" Mac quirked a grin. Considering how embarrassed she was of hers sometimes, she definitely got that.

"Somedays one, other days the other," Ron said with a grin. "The red hair is a dead giveaway. And when my brothers or sister bring on the humiliation, I'd pretty much like to disavow them as siblings."

"You must have a really big family," Mac remarked. She's heard him talk about how many siblings so far?

"Four older brothers and a younger sister," Ron said with a nod. "And much more beyond that once you get beyond our little family unit."

"I just have the one little brother," Mac said, picking up the menu. "And, well, technically a sister... That starts to get complicated."

"Technically?" Ron asked looking a tad confused. "How do you mean?"

"Biological sister, and a brother I'm not related to, but grew up with. They don't know any of that, though."

Ron just kind of blinked at that.

"How did that happen?"

"Switched at birth," Mac explained. "They figured it out a bit late to do anything about it, and just kept it that way. They have no idea I found out."

Ron just boggled at that for a moment or two. "You know, as much as I wished I had that happen to me, I never really thought that such things truly happened in the world," he finally said. "That must be a bit hard to deal with."

Mac shrugged, and quirked a wry smile. "I've had a few years to work through it... My parents are my parents, biology or not."

"And when they do something embarrassing, I'm comforted by the fact I can easily mentally disown them."

Ron watched her with a touched expression on his face... until the "mentally disowned" part and he burst out laughing.

"Now that is something all kids wish they could claim," he said as the waiter showed up with menus. "I don't suppose you can tell me where to start on this?"

"Depends what you're into. Usually best to narrow it down by say, which meat you want," she said tracing her finger down the list thoughtfully.
