Book Haven: Thursday 10-5PM [6-26-08]

Millie was rather cheerful after having spent the better part of the week resting up from the weekend. Magically moving all those people all that distance had taken a huge amount out of her. She'd gone home Sunday and collapsed until her clinic shift on Monday, then returned home and slept for the better part of the next two days.

She set out treats for the customers and curled up in a comfy chair to read.

Murdock was still in his 'check up on everyone he knew' mode. He'd heard about Millie's involvement and so here was, knowing she'd be at the book store today.

"Hey beautiful," he smiled, coming up to her. "How you've been? I heard about..." an arm wave, "you know. The weekend."

"I'm alright." He took a seat in a nearby chair. "How's...everything else?" He wasn't sure where to go next. He didn't really want to pry about anything, and if she said she was okay, she probably was.

"Just..." another arm wave, "life, the universe and everything?" He sighed a little. "Anything new, interesting, anything you want to talk about?"

"Funny, I didn't get that impression the first time I met ya." He leaned toward her a bit, "Maybe you judge yourself a bit too much?" he asked gently.

"That's not what I meant, Millie. I mean..." he sighed, trying to figure out how to put it in words. "I'm not saying that you're not happy, but this...lack of confidence you seem to have. On one hand you tell me you're happy with yourself but then you say you're nothing special and nothing to look at and I guess..." He frowned a bit. "I guess I'm just confused."

"That's not..." he started, then dropped his head and let out a huge sigh. He looked back up at her. "I don't know how to explain it. But...that's not what I meant either. It's not that you have to compare yourself to anyone at all, Millie. It's..." he struggled for words, "You are beautiful and special, yet you don't seem to believe it. I don't understand why."

"I..." Murdock didn't really know what to say. "I guess you're right," he spoke quietly after a moment. "I do believe those things about you, and...I guess I was hopin' that you'd see it too." He shrugged slowly. "And I'm happy that you're content as you are. That I wouldn't change. But..."

He looked away and stared at the floor, fingers intertwining around themselves. "You're right about me too. I don't always see what others do. Quite literally at times. That's part of the package of bein' crazy. I know I don't make any sense and..." he closed his eyes for a moment, "I can't change that either. I wish I could."

He looked back up at her. "Thank you. I guess." Honestly, Murdock didn't know what he wanted. Could he be sane ever again? He'd been crazy for so long that he wasn't sure what sanity meant anymore. "Maybe, someday I will be?" He smiled just a little. "Thanks, Millie. I...suppose I should be goin'." So he could try to wrap his brain around everything that just happened. "I'll see you later?" He wasn't entirely sure if Millie would want to see him again, and he wouldn't blame her if she didn't.

He shrugged. "I just thought...maybe. I have a way of confusing and annoying people," he blurted out. "I figured you..." he looked away. "You thought that way too."

He nodded. He figured he did, but the idea that she thought him not irritating gave him some hope.

Which was dashed with her next words. He obviously couldn't see what she did and apparently he needed to leave well enough alone. "I...understand." A small, sad smile crossed his face. "I'll do as you ask." He quickly stood up, leaned over her and gave her a quick peck on the check. "Good-bye, Millie." He strode quickly out, not giving her a chance to say anything further.
