Kaylee did not actually have anything to keep her hands busy today. So, she was restlessly tapping her fingers along the counter, and finally settled on the idea of shining up her tools.

So that was what she'd be doing today, since she didn't have nothing to work on. She'd have to fix that.

Andrew had not been interested in hearing about Lucas' troubles with the ball polisher yesterday having other problems of Ms. Stayton's to deal with, so there was Lucas, carting the broken machine into Stark Industries.

He recognized the girl from auto shop class and searched for her name. "Uh, hey...Katie?" What? It sounded very similar.

Kaylee glanced up, gave him a little half-smile, and corrected, "You mean Kaylee? 'less one of the robots is named Katie. I could ask."

"Oh, sorry!" Lucas cringed a little. "And here I am in search of help."

"Yeah?" Kaylee grinned, trying to peek at the thingie he'd brought. "What's that you got there?"

"It's my ball polisher," Lucas replied and then paused as if realizing what he'd said.

"I mean, the ball polisher. Golf balls. I work at Wonders."

Kaylee fought to contain her giggles, but she couldn't help but say, "So it's s'posed to maintain your balls?"

Lucas laughed, "In a way! Just not dirty."

"Well, ain't that the point?" she replied, grinning. "If it's polishin' 'em. So it's busted? Any clue on what's wrong?"

Lucas returned her grin. "Well..." He launched into great technical detail including what he'd done to break it and then how he'd tried to fix it himself, being familiar with mechanical things. "Think you can help?"

"Shouldn't be too tough," Kaylee assured him, completely at ease and leaning in to take a look at the ball polisher. "I been itchin' for a project, anyway."

"You must really like fixin' stuff," Lucas remarked. "Or you're just really bored."

"Bit of both at this point, but it starts with the love of machines, yep," she said, smiling up at him. "You know your way 'round 'em, too, huh? Self-taught, or did you grow up learnin' this stuff from someone like I did?"

"Grew up with it," Lucas nodded. "My uncle Keith had a garage back home and I always fixed stuff for my mom."

She nodded. "You're from this time, then?"

He nodded again. "I take it you're not?"

"Try five hundred years from now," she said cheerfully, pulling out a screwdriver to try to poke at the ball polisher a bit more. "M'daddy has a shop at home, an' I'm a lot more used to workin' on ships an' mules an' stuff. But machines are kinda universal, y'know? Tech don't change that much."

"Five hundred?" He repeated, rather awed. "That's a freaking huge amount of time for tech not to change much."

"I mean, we got a lot more space travel," she said, nodding, "an' our stuff hovers. We don't use cars, really. But engines here ain't too different from what I'm used too. Really, really old fashioned, but a lot of the parts're the same or close 'nough to spit."

Lucas was really amused. She was cute in a chatty sort of way. "You travel in space much?"

"This is my first time off-planet," she admitted, almost shy. "So, um, I ain't from Earth, so I dunno if you'd count that in an' of itself."

"So you're like an alien or something?" His eyes drifted, he'd always assumed she was just another girl.

She laughed at that. Kind of a lot. "Nooooo. We don't got aliens in the future, so far's I know. Nope, we just used up Earth a couple hundred years back, found a new galaxy, an' now we all live out there. I'm from a planet called Beylix."

"Oh!" Well that was certainly unexpected. "Guess there's not much point buying property here."

Kaylee shook her head, idly playing with her hair. "I'd take up Chinese, though. Everyone back home speaks at least a little bit. But you don't got to worry, 'less you're plannin' to live for another two, three hundred years or so."

"With Fandom the way it is you never know where you'll end up," Lucas pointed out. "Still have Chinese food in the future?"
