Wellspring Arms and Meditation Center, Friday

Rikku was having an awesome day. She was gonna get a new roommate! She was at work, with all of the guns! Her finals had been awesome! She had an adorable and still-amazingly-grumpy Worf!kitty with her!

So the Wellspring Arms was open, and you were very, very likely to get bounced at. (Or hissed at, depending on which of the two it was that you chatted with.)

Romeo dashed in after his time at the shooting range, looking fairly happy. "Good day, Rikku. Are you allowed to sell bullets?"

What? He was out.

"Hiya!" she bounced, waving cheerfully to Romeo. "You know? That's a really good question. I think I am. Just normal ones, right? Nothing like freaky or extra-dangerous?"

Someone came in asking for super-fancy ammo once. That, she'd passed along to Cable.

"Normal," he agreed smiling slightly. "I was target shooting with Ino and I ran out. I only need two boxes, I don't shoot so often these days."

"I thought I'd get more and say hello to a friend at the same time. How have you been?"

"I'm good," she said, bouncing on her toes. "I'm getting a roommate! And I had a kitty slash up my arms. Ooooooh, hey, how was Tokyo? Did everything go okay with Dojima's family and all of that?"

"Who's moving in?" Romeo asked, wondering why Rikku would give up the privileges of a single.

He shrugged a little. "You know how she sometimes jokes about Americans being barbarians? When her father says it, it is not such a joke. But she got to come back to school, so it went as well as we could have hoped. And I do like Tokyo."

"Ella!" Rikku beamed. "She was in my cabin, uh, have you met her? She's new. Very nice. Her roommate -- Turtle -- is moving in with Jeff, so we're kind of doing a switcharound deal. I can't wait, it's been so weird since Hermione left."

The rest of it earned a wince. "Yeouch," she said. "He really just -- didn't like you, because of where you're from? That's horrible."

"I've not met her," Romeo shrugged. "I hope she doesn't snore or leave dirty clothes everywhere."

He scrunched up his face. "I don't think he would have been well-disposed to anyone his princess brought home," he said. "My being American was simply the easiest thing to hang that on. We also may have given the impression I was frivolous."

Which was ... not actually entirely innaccurate.

Rikku laughed. "I can't see her doing either. But if she does, you get full I-told-you-so rights. You can say I-told-you-so all day long, I won't mind."

"That's ... hard," she added, chewing on her lower lip. "It's ... I think dads are like that, sometimes. It's not fair, or right, or anything, but nobody's gonna be Good Enough for their little girl. Pops hated Jude. I don't want to know what he'd think of Reno, either. It's totally a weird Dad thing. You could've been, like, a theoretical physicist bodybuilder with billions of dollars and he'd be upset that you weren't a trillionaire."

"I'll make up a little song," he joked, and then shrugged and pushed his hand off his hair, thinking.

"He's ... I would not say he's especially nice to her?" Which was an understatement. "But she says it's just the way he is. I think if I were Japanese, and a genius, and a trillionaire, and the Dojimas had known my family since the middle ages, I might have been almost acceptable -- as long as he could be convinced he'd chosen me for her."

"After the first night we found other things to do, and they were content enough to let us."

"There should be a song," she laughed. "For just those occasions when you're so right that it needs to be sung."

"I'm sorry. About her dad, and all, and ... that he's mean to her," she added, and that last bit made her frown again. "Pops gets ... protective sometimes, and he can get so frustrating, but I know he's just watching out for me. If he was ... mean, that'd ... hurt, you know? Just to feel like he didn't even care."

"Naturally. A dance, too," Romeo said seriously, then looked down at the display case. It made it easier to think.

And, apparently, to sigh, for that is what he did. "I think it does hurt her," he said. "Though there is nothing I can do about it, beyond help however she needs." And if that meant getting very drunk and spending the night in Tokyo dance clubs, he was a generous soul. "I offered to hit him."

That bit was blurted, and he blushed saying it.

She grinned, at that. "Good for you," she said. "Sometimes, people just need to be punched."

Well, they did.

"Do you think there's ... anything I can do? To help, I mean."

"At least someone thinks it's a good idea," he said ruefully. "She didn't. Probably for the best, I'd hate to have been deported."

He tilted his head to the side as he considered her next question. "You know Yurika," he finally said. "She wouldn't deal well with pity. I think all anyone can do is be her friend."

She had to laugh, at that. "Well, I don't think it'd be such a great idea if you'd done it. Just that it was a good suggestion. And you know, she might appreciate the offer even if she yelled at you for it. Sometimes, we girls are weird like that."

Mental note: check up on Dojima, without making it seem like she was checking up on her.

"Maybe," he hazarded. "She looked sort of panic-stricken."

"Oh." Rikku giggled. Mean, but she seriously couldn't help it. "Uh. Maybe she thought you were actually going to, like, on the spot?"

"Would I do something so base?"

Romeo may have forgotten Rikku knows him.

"Your innocent face needs a little work," she laughed.

"I'll get to work on it, then. Is this better?" he asked, trying to look the way he looked in Catholic school, when he heard a priest heading toward him when he was in the middle of a smutty joke.

It was not a bad innocent look, actually.

"Ooooooooh, that's much better!" she grinned. "The eyes really sell it. Hmmm. Lemme try."

This was her best face for lying to her Pops. Gosh, she didn't notice all the boys at school, she was far too busy studying.

"I want to give a great deal of money to your questionable charity," Romeo decided, biting back a giggle.

"We give all the money to orphans," Rikku said, eyes still huge. "Orphans who had their limbs chewed off by sea monsters. We use the money for spare limbs. All those allegations about me stealing the money and using it on lots of drugs, those ... those just make me sad."

"Of course they would," Romeo said, eyes shining with either compassion or swallowed laughter. "Because you'd never do such a thing. You eschew drugs, just as I do!"

"But," he added. "I could use a few dollars to buy flowers for my mother's birthday."

Light modding is fine, so long as you remember that zomg, he hates you. And everything. Ever.
