Ned had gone out.

Yes, this was a major accomplishment. He was pretty sure he wasn't going to run into any errant demon leftover from last weekend but he was packing anyway.

Yes folks, he had a rolling pin. Just in case.

But, it wasn't needed now since he was safely inside, had safely procured a pastry and was safely sitting in a chair.

See? Accomplishment.

It wasn't that she didn't want to spend her whole night at the reception. It was that she wanted to see more of Earth-That-Was.

So, Kaylee found herself wandering into some place that smelled sweet, and she was almost positive that that was strawberries.

Ned hadn't been paying much attention so he was busy eating a powdered pastry when she walked in.

So, he had a nice mustache of powder to greet the new arrival with.

Kaylee glanced over at the boy, stifled a giggle (not very well, but the effort counted) and resisted the urge to say anything to him. Instead, there were strawberry tarts in that case to look at.

Ned looked up at the sound and frowned in confusion. "You usually wait awhile to laugh at me."

Kaylee shot him a funny look. "Huh?"

"You usually wait awhile to laugh at me," he repeated, thinking maybe she just couldn't hear him. "Why are you laughing now?"

"...um. You got some stuff," Kaylee said, gesturing to her upper lip. "An' what d'you mean 'usually'?"

"I got some stuff?" he repeated and then touched his lip, coming away with powder. "Oh god."

He wiped the powder off on the sleeve of his shirt and then wiped his shirt on his pants. He was smooth.

"Um. Usually means...often? Unless it's been changed by that Webster guy."

"But I never -- have we met?" Kaylee fumbled, confused. "I ain't never been here before."

"What?"

Ned blinked and squinted. Maybe his eyes were just-no, that was Kaylee.

"You haven't?" Maybe this was something else. "But...I just saw you the other day."

"We just landed today," she said, really confused.

"So, you don't know me?" he asked, frowning.

"...no. I'm here for a wedding?" she said, tilting her head. "Y'all got a real nice...um, planet, though?"

"Oh. Right, of course," he said, blushing at his mistake and wondering what he'd done to be forgotten like that.

Poor Ned. Still not up on dopplegangers from different times.

"Yeah, the planet's nice," he said, fighting the urge to flee and, instead, just curling up on himself a little.

"I didn't think it'd be this nice," she said thoughtfully. "What're you eatin'?"

"A pastry," he said, wiggling it at her while looking down at his feet. "Breaded sweet thing."

"Why're you lookin' down?" she asked, tilting her head at him. "I don't bite."

"I didn't think you did," he said and glanced up briefly before looking back down. "Which is a good thing, I know. Unsolicited biting just ruins days. What a story to tell, huh?"

"Solicited bitin' ain't so bad," she said, grinning. Simon would have probably looked scandalized at that.

"Yes, it is," he said, feeling the back of his neck heat up. "And I'm not soliciting anything. You don't know me, after all."

"I have a thing, anyway," she told him. "A...fella. An' you're a little young for me, I think. Had my share of boys waaaaay too wee for me."

"I wasn't asking!" Ned said, eyes wide. "Look, you don't know me and that's fine but I'm not a boy, I'm not wee so you don't need to rub that in my face."

"I'm...sure you're not wee," Kaylee said, trying not to laugh again.
