Kaylee didn't mind working on a holiday (even one she only kinda sorta knew of) because truth be told, this was how she'd spend it anyway, given her druthers.

So she was there, carefully putting the finishing touches on Lucas' ball polisher.

Hee. Ball polisher.

After the encounter last weekend and no further encounters, Ned thought, maybe, it had been a dream. A very weird dream but a dream nonetheless.

But, he thought he should test to make sure so he went into town (all on his own), carrying something small in his hand, and wandered inside.

If she knew him, it was a dream. If she didn't know him (or know him as well as the other girl-her), then it was real and he would just run away.

It was Friday, so Lucas thought he ought to check in on his ball polisher.

"Hey, you!" Kaylee chirped, looking up. "You break 'nother clock?"

"Hiya!" Kaylee called cheerfully, peeking up from where she was finishing with the ball polisher. "She's just about all ready for you."

"Great! I'm excited to get it back," Lucas said happily. "Work was pretty boring yesterday."

"You missed polishin' your balls that much?" she asked, all innocence.

"Oh." Well, she hadn't said his name though she knew about his clock. "So...you know me?"

Lucas laughed. "There's gonna be a lot of polishing to be done next week to make up for it."

Kaylee frowned at him. "...yeah. You hit your head, Ned?"

"Gotta make it up to those poor, neglected an' unpolished balls, I guess," Kaylee said, stepping back to take a look. "I think she's good. She should run better'n she did before, even."

"Thanks," Lucas smiled, moving to take a look at the machine. "Working would be a huge improvement.

"Not today," he said though there were several hours there where he hadn't been awake and could have fallen out of sleep and smacked his head. He'd be the only person on Earth to get sleep concussions. "We didn't...just meet last weekend and that's how you know me, right?"

"...no," she said slowly. "Not so far as I know. We met when we got here?"

"She ain't too decorative on her own," Kaylee agreed. She pointed out a few improvements she'd made to the internal workings of the machine, explaining how it would run more efficiently. "But I could undo that if you want 'er to be like she was," she added. "'Cept, you know, working."

Okay, maybe he did have a concussion.

Or some rare tropical disease that made him see identical people but they were really spirits.

Or...something else.

"Okay." Okay. "You didn't forget me or anything?"

"Are you okay?" she asked, frowning worriedly, and wiping her hands on her pants really quick. "Do you got a fever?"

"Wow!" Lucas was very impressed by the upgrades she'd described. "You did some serious work here, Kaylee."

"I was bored," she said modestly.

"Your boredom leads to some awesome productivity," Lucas replied. "You got a lot of work to do today?"

"I...hope not," he said, frowning and looking down at his feet. "Maybe I was hallucinating?"

Kaylee carefully reached up to touch his forehead. "Why would you think I forgot you?"

She shook her head. "That was pretty much my big project."

"Because you did last weekend," he said, flinching just a bit but not moving away.

"You ain't overwarm," she mused. "An' I didn't even see you last weekend."

"But I saw you," he said, frowning worriedly. "Maybe I was dreaming. I was dreaming. It had to be a dream. I dreamed about you."

And that didn't sound right.

"Um. Dreamed about you...not anything badly. At all."
