The Arms Hotel Lobby, Saturday

Hoshi would have rather been at the picnic today, but that meant leaving Gunther to run afternoon tea on his own while Miss Connell was out of town. And somehow, Hoshi didn't trust Gunther enough to do that.

Besides, she was claustrophobic anyway. Better to spend the day in the nice, airy, open lobby than at a picnic surrounded by lots of people. She definitely made sure to put up the help wanted sign before sitting down at the front desk with a book in Latin.

In Latin, preferably, but she'll talk in any language you throw at her.

Afternoon tea. G'Kar had been forgetting about those for a while. He smiled as he saw the familiar face behind the counter. "Hoshi! It has been some time since we last encountered each other. How are things for you?"

"Not bad," said Hoshi, smiling. "It's been a quiet summer for me so far, not counting the weekend that Hades went wacky. I kind of just hid for all of that."

"I spent most of the weekend in the library. Trying to find a solution to help defeat Hades." He shook his head a bit, "A school administrator turning like that. How sad."

"I'm starting to find that I'm more useful not getting caught than trying to fight," said Hoshi.

"You have been captured before? In other instances? I am glad you are all right." He shrugged a bit, "I suppose I could fight. But I find myself much more drawn to providing assistance through the search of knowledge than fisticuffs these days."

"I got attacked by a vampire once," said Hoshi. "I got rescued by a another student. Since then, I've been working on my fighting skills, but I'm not about to take chances."

"A vampire? How intriguing. What was that like, if I may ask?"

"A true warrior always prepares for battle, but never hopes for one. Wise words from the Minbari."

"It was fast," said Hoshi. "I didn't even get a chance to fight back before it had me on the ground. If Mel hadn't come along when she did..."

"Sounds unpleasant. I'm glad you had help arrive when you needed it. I've not heard much about them, only what I've picked up in books. The closest we have in my universe is SoulHunters."

"Soul Hunters? That doesn't sound pleasant," said Hoshi. "What do they do?"

"They believe that the souls of 'important' people must be saved for prosperity. They have a way...of 'stealing' someone's esscence, if you will, at the moment of death and they encase the soul in an orb."

"However, these orbs are only shared with other Soul Hunters and left in rooms with other orbs. Some, like the Minbari, believe that the souls trapped inside often go mad since they cannot move forward and they can only interact in limited fashion. The Minbari, as well as a few others, believe that a soul is reborn into another, thus increasing the knowledge of the universe. But it cannot be reborn if it is trapped. Most races abhor the SoulHunters and actively ban them from their space. They never travel unless they are seeking a soul."

"That just sounds creepy," said Hoshi. "I hope there's nothing like them in my world, because in my time period, we're just getting to explore deep space."

"I would not wish their kind on anyone," he replied. "I do hope your people never encounter such a thing."

"So do I," said Hoshi, but she looked a little bit apprehensive. "Knowing my luck, I'll be the one making first contact since I'm the communications expert."

"I'm certain you shall do fine," he smiled. "There are dangerous races out there in the unknown, but a great many wonderous ones as well. It is worth the risk to explore in search of others."

"And I'm sure there are many wonderful languages out there for me to learn," added Hoshi, perking up.

"But of course," he grinned. That, of course, gave him an idea. "You wouldn't by chance, happen to be interested in learning Narn would you?" G'Kar had enjoyed his discussions with Garibaldi over the language, and to some extent, he rather missed that.

Hoshi's face lit up. "A real alien language? Of course I'd be interested!"

"Well, I suppose that if I'm a real alien, I must also have a real alien language," he grinned. "Most excellent! When is a good day for you to begin?"

Hoshi may have had to check her data PADD, since she hadn't memorized her schedule yet. "I've got workshops on Tuesdays and Fridays, and then I work on Thursdays, so Mondays and Wednesdays are good for me," she said.

"Mondays should work well," he replied. "Where shall we meet? The library or something less formal?"

"How about the Perk? I find coffee helps improve memory retention," suggested Hoshi with a smirk.

"I agree. That will work quite well, I think," he replied, smiling.

The carriage might have been hers until she found a place of permanent (or semi-permanent) lodging and so it was only a small part of her luggage which she brought with her into the lobby. Mary had a couple of bags and Mike, somewhat tuckered out from his day at the picnic, trotted along behind them.

"I would like to take out a suite of rooms for some days. Would you be able to help me, young lady?"

The 'young lady' wasn't belittling in the least, only curious and somewhat tired as she'd spent the day socializing and slowly starting to learn her way around this place.

"That shouldn't be a problem," said Hoshi, grabbing the guest register and checking to see which rooms were available. "Did you need anything in particular? Mini bar? King-sized bed? Balcony?"

She looked back at Mary and Mike, the woman looking a bit haggard and the terrier looking ready to flop over, and shook her head.

"A bed is all I'll really need until I manage to locate and acquire a more permanent residence," she said, "And a smaller room, attached, for my maid. My dog will, of course, be allowed to stay with me, yes? I'm willing to pay a pet deposit if necessary."

"That shouldn't be a problem. We like dogs here," said Hoshi. "I'll put you in room 602 and 604, since they're adjoining rooms. 602 is the larger of the two. Will that work?

"Perfectly," and Mary looked very appreciative. Mike looked like a terrier, which was fortunate as he was one.

She smiled at Hoshi.

"Would you possibly have anyone to help us with our bags? I'm sure your establishment has an elevator, but it has been something of a long day."

"Certainly," said Hoshi. "Here's your room key. If you could just sign the register while I someone to help you."

It took a moment for her to actually locate the bell boy. Hoshi eventually located him snacking on cucumber sandwiches in the kitchen. There was a little bit of yelling, and then the bell boy came out to collect the bags.

Mary handed the bags she'd been carrying over and passed the ones Abigail Irene had been carrying as well as her mistress went to work signing the register and collecting the keys. She handed Mary her room key and slipped her own in her pocket, beside her ebony wand, before smiling at Hoshi.

"Many thanks," she said as she watched the bell boy collect things.

"I won't trouble you any more, except to ask that a light supper be brought up in a couple of hours for the two of us, as well as a small bowl of chopped meat for my dog."

Mary would no doubt arrange any other service for the rest of her stay, but she figured she'd best handle that now.

"I'll have Gunther bring that up for you," said Hoshi. She wondered for a moment if she should warn the new guest about Gunther being a little wacky, but decided against it. Besides, Hoshi knew that she could keep Gunther in line.

"Perfect."

At which point she offered a smile, a nod, and collected both dog and maid and headed for her room.
