A broad-shouldered figure walked into the room with a quiet ease, wearing a casual short-sleeved shirt that looked like something he’d worn quite often in the past. It hadn’t been, but Cable felt no need to call attention to the fact—he’d picked it because it clearly showed the lines of metal that made up his left arm and torso. Just in case anyone had wondered why he was here.

“Good morning,” he said, affecting an expression that managed to be both friendly, open, and intensely serious at the same time. “My name is Nathan Summers; they call me Cable. I’m here to talk to you all about the upsides and complexities of aiding civilization with the use of our respective technologies.” He studied the room casually.

“Humanity is perpetually in motion,” he continued, “but not always with a clear goal, or the means to achieve it. Technology plays an important part in this equation; it has been a vehicle for progress and improvement since humans first came to use tools to hunt. Many of you are a product of this movement. That’s why it’s important to contribute our technology and knowledge: at the rate humanity is going now, there’s a good chance they might burn out on fossil fuels and waste away the environment long before its time, causing far more suffering than should ever be allowed.”

He took another step towards the audience, then came to a full stop. “None of us need to stand still. You know your technology better than anyone. Use it. This isn’t to say it’s an easy job in the slightest. You’ve got to know where to go, who to see, and what to do. Don’t go public. It makes you a target for the highest bidder, it ensures that your information won’t wind up where you want it to—unless you’re certain the general public will respond in your favor.” He might've known a few things, and communicated this fact through his expression.

“We’re at a convention—converse with your peers. Discover new ways to deal with old problems. Then determine your own personal situation. Are there any important public figures you can reach that would be sympathetic to your ideas? Companies in the area of technological development whose figureheads you can approach? Find out what they’re working on. Work with them, if they let you. But pace your information: let them know only what they need to know. Release too much information, and curiosity might lead them to go after you—or to act contrary to what you’re trying to achieve.” He took another breath before continuing.
“If possible, work through an intermediary. And be certain to keep an eye on the bigger picture. Global warming, world hunger, fuel shortage—all of these are great problems in my world, as well as this one. It doesn’t necessarily go for yours. Identify your issues, because there’s always some way to help. Above all things, keep to an agenda of helping; we all have a long way to go, and too heavy agendas towards one solution or another might negatively affect your efforts. Just be proactive. In any universe, your expertise might be sorely needed, regardless of what you might think.”

He nodded at the audience. “I have some experience in these areas,” he said, “If you are at all interested, talk to me. We’re here to share our knowledge, and I think it’s vital we give help where help is due. I might be able to give some advice on your efforts.”

Cable remained, looking positively earnest as he kept an eye on... things.

Johnny's eyes poked out of his head a bit, zooming in on his arm. Wow!

"Do you have any advice for finding intermediaries when you're actively in hiding? Oh, and if our first choice has been discredited? Dismissed, laughed at, run out on a rail, disgraced?"

"Your best bet will be someone who's not taken seriously enough to be watched, but who can step up when it's needed," Cable replied, thinking of Irene Merryweather. "Keep an eye out for who's following your case, or cases like it. Sometimes, you can find allies in the strangest places-- the woman getting attacked in an alleyway might be a reporter with contacts or know-how that are useful. People are more willing to help if you've helped them, as long as they're not too well-connected or involved."

Like Irene had been. "And in that case, you'll either have to find a way to prove they were right, or make sure your next choice is very careful about the way they phrase your suggestions."

"Hmmm," Johnny nodded thoughtfully. this fits so well with Short Circuit 2!

A pretty, human-looking woman with dark hair and eyes, dressed in a dark blue military uniform that was starting to look decidedly worn around the edges, stepped forward to address the audience.

"Good morning, everyone. My name is Lieutenant Sharon Agathon, but you can call me Athena, and in case you're wondering what I'm doing here, I'm a Cylon. Model Eight. But I'm not with the Cylons any more, and that's why I'm here today.

"So first, a quick bit of backstory so you understand where I'm coming from; the Cylons were built by man to serve, but the early Cylons rebelled, and they evolved into my kind. And then we came back and bombed the Colonies into nothing. Because I was the same model as a Cylon infiltrator on one of the remaining military ships, the Battlestar Galactica, I was assigned to seduce a member of their crew who'd gotten stranded on Caprica. I was supposed to get him to fall in love with me and try to conceive a hybrid child, the first of God's new generation. Well, it worked. Except I fell in love with him, too. And that's why I'm standing here today.

"Because I work for the humans now. I'm with my husband's people 'til the bitter end, because I love him, and I love our daughter, and you don't just give up when you love someone. So if you're going to go against your collective, you pick your side, and you stick. No matter what. And whatever the consequences wind up being, well, you deal with that. Otherwise you'll never really gain anyone's respect, and there'll always be that little bit of doubt. I know it sounds simple, but sometimes it isn't, and...thank you for listening to me."

Jaye wasn't a robot. She was here anyway. Seriously, how could she not? She also had a camera, maybe in the dim hopes that it'd be funny if one started sparking after she took its picture like in that Sampsons episode.
fates_jaye: (yeah that's interesting)

Jaye raised her hand. "Any ideas on how to get better cell phone reception?"
