The York Gallery, Saturday [8/2]

Kevin had found a broom last week, so he thought he would do some actual work today and sweep the gallery.

He got about as far as the reception desk before deciding to take a break and look at pretty pictures on the internet. The broom was quickly forgotten.

The exhibit floor really wasn't that dusty anyway.

Open!

Charlotte owned a gallery, where there were pictures and stuff. And since she owned it, that meant she was responsible and had people working for her, and so she was going to be a good little boss and she hurried into the gallery and said, "Hihihihihi, Kevin! I hope you're working hard!"

"Yes," Charlotte said with a nod. "And I can be, 'cause I own the place. Kevin," she stated, very importantly, "I don't like the pictures in the gallery right now; I think they're ugly."

It might be then that Kevin noticed the papers and crayons that Charlotte was holding onto in one hand, especially since she was waving them at him with an air of demand. "I am going to make new, prettier pictures to put up for people to look at. You can help!"

Charlotte laughed a little at that. "I'm not so small!" she insisted. "I'm bigger than my brother, at least!" But she giggled again, because she knew she was much smaller than Kevin, even though she was his boss. She smiled at him a moment before she sat down carefully on the floor, making sure her skirt was kept nice and lady-like, and then patted a spot next to her as she put the papers and crayons down.

"I'm going to draw a picture of a pretty princess," she decided. "Those are always pretty. You can draw a picture of the scary dragon that the white knight is going to come and rescue her from." Her nose wrinkled a little. "I'm not good at drawing the dragons."

Well, that was a silly question.

"Chaaaaarlotte," she answered as she scribbled in the color of Princess Charlotte's floofy pink dress.

"Nooooo!" Charlotte said, whining slightly as she gave Kevin a desperate look. "You can't name the dragon Kevin, because dragons are mean, and you're not mean, and you can't name the knight Toby, because I was going to name him Dale, and it's the princess' knight, not the dragons, and the princess and the knight have to live happily ever after and get maaaarried."

She looked very, very set on this point, with an expression that suggested that if Kevin didn't agree to it, she'd probably cry, and then wouldn't he feel bad, making a little girl and his boss cry like that.

Charlotte was looking with disapproval at the details of the knight that Kevin was drawing. "That's not what he looks like," she said. "He wears a suit." Realizing that it was hopeless because boys were so stubborn, she sighed heavily and decided to alter the story a little, "But, okay, fine. We can both have knights. The dragon has one and the princess has one, and no one's evil, and everyone lives happily ever after. That's a much better ending, anyway, where everyone gets to be happy."

Charlotte nodded firmly, adding more sparkly stars to the Princess' crown. "That's right."

Charlotte was going to answer that, of course she was, because it was her, but she remembered her manners and how that was being arrogant and rude so she just gave Kevin a smile as she said, "Thank you! I think your dragon is very fierce-looking. But not in an evil way, of course. Because no one's evil in this story; everyone's good and happy."

Charlotte giggled at the idea. "Everyone will want to buy it, Kevin! So we can't let them! Then they'll want to buy it even more!"

Charlotte's eyes lit up. "We do!"

But then it faded again. "But it only prints black and white..."

The light then swiftly returned. "But we can scan them! The computer has a scanner, and we can scan them, and then print them on the color printer! Kevin! You're a genius! Even if you are a boy!"

"Okay!" Charlotte clapped her hand a little, happily, excitedly. "And then we'll put them in the gallery and people will see them and love them and buy prints and we'll be famous and rich, Kevin! I always figured I'd be rich 'cause I was gonna marry someone rich, but I'm okay with this way, too!"

"Oh, no," Charlotte agreed, "of course it's not important."

She drew more sparkles on the princess' dress.

"But it's nice."

"Oooh, like how much?" Charlotte wanted to know. "Fifteen dollars?"

Hey, that was a lot of money to a seven year old.

Charlotte nodded at Kevin with the utmost confidence. "Oh, we can get that," she told him. "And it'll be a steal. Look at how good we are!"

To prove her point, she held up her very scribbly and seven-year-old-esque picture of what could be assumed to be a princess and a knight. If you squinted hard enough.

"Your knight doesn't have any armor," Charlotte observed, looking a little confused about the whole matter.

Charlotte considered this very carefully, her eyes narrowed in the utmost scrutiny.

Then, after a moment, she brightly conclude, "Okay!" and started drawing a kitty for her princess. It was going to be fluffy and white and be named Muffin.

"Did a stupid kangaroo come through here?" Wolverine demanded to know as he ran up to the desk.
