The Arms Hotel Lobby, Friday

It was River's last day at work. As a present for Mary she had brought a box with her, filled with the remaning reaver knives that she and Buffy had collected on Miranda. They had been used as wall decorations in her dorm room for a long time now. They might look good on a wall in the lobby.

Arranging the knives on the wall behind the reception desk, River hummed to herself.

"I got you a present, River!" said Mary as she entered the lobby. She had a gift-wrapped copy of "Oh, the Stuff You'll See (http://www.amazon.com/Oh-Places-Youll-Classic-Seuss/dp/0679805273)!" and a ton of helium-filled balloons.

River beamed at Mary and accepted the gift and the balloons. Unwrapping wasn't necessary for her to find out what it was, but she enjoyed the tearing of the paper. "Thank you."

She gestured at the wall behind her, where she had arranged the knives. "Gift for you!"

Mary was a little stunned, but that passed quickly and she burst out laughing. "Perfect! When I catch the prankster who turned my hair green, I'll just march them down here and lecture them," she said.

River nodded. "Useful in many ways." Mary was a kind and gentle person; she might need something for threatening people.

"So, what are your plans once you leave?" asked Mary.

"Going home." River was deliberately being vague, not wanting to make Mary worried. She smiled. "Have enjoyed working here."

"Well, I've enjoyed having you work here. You've been very helpful, especially when it came to dealing with Gunther," said Mary. "I'm really going to miss you."

"Will miss you too." Still holding on to the book and the balloons, River reached up to give Mary a hug.

Mary hugged River back. "Now, you keep in touch as much as possible," she instructed. "And I'll be saving you a suite if you come back for Homecoming."

She might not come back, but she didn't want Mary to know that. "A suite and some towel animals," she grinned.

"You'll have your own personal zoo of towel animals," said Mary, grinning. "I go all out for my favorite guests."

"I know," she said. Mary always did.

Just don't cut yourself on the knives.
