The Perk, Sunday Evening

She had been quite… scarce about Fandom lately, Juli mused as she settled herself at the Perk with a coffee and the latest in data that Helmer had sent her that morning.

A smile curved her lips as she went over it, absently tucking an errant strand of hair behind one ear. If this was correct, she’d be able to get home within the week. The Federation’s scientists had managed to translate the data she’d been able to get to them and discover her temporal coordinates.

About time, though she supposed that Fandom had not been so bad. Juli shook her head slightly. Either way, it would be good to be home, where she was needed.

Good indeed.

Though she’d miss the coffee.

[Open as you will.]

Murdock was still a bit restless, so he decided to head over to the Perk for some coffee. Houston walked along at his heels.

He nodded slightly at Juli, "Hey."

He shrugged, taking a seat. "I dunno. But he's a well-behaved dog," if sometimes a bit eager, "and I doubt he'll cause any problems." He glanced down, "Will ya, boy?"

Houston just wagged his tail and settled himself at Murdock's feet, cocking his head in interest at Juli.

"How's your evening goin'?" he asked after he'd ordered a coffee.

"I ain't got no leash with me," he offered, non-committaly. "I reckon I could just have him stay outside and wait," another shrug, "but does it really make a difference if he's in or out? Where's the harm to the store?" He calmly sipped at his coffee.

He could just be joking around or he really just might not care. Or possibly he was just being a pain in the ass.

"Fine." He got up and shooed Houston out the door. "Stay."

He went back to his coffee, semi-grouchy. He knew that was rude and that he had been inconsiderate, but some part of him didn't really care.

"Sorry," he muttered. "That was rude," he acknowledged.

He sipped at his coffee in silence for several minutes, keeping to himself, running things through his head.

Finally, he let out a bit of a sigh, rubbing a hand across his weary face. "I know it was. Been a bit of long day, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't be taking it on other people."

"Sorry," he said again. This time however, it was genuine.

"Oh it did?" he arched an eyebrow in curiosity. He'd missed the radio broadcast, being out pretty much all night.

"Well," a casual sip of coffee, "I might be."

He offered another slight shrug. "Just the usual. Some slimeball trying to take advantage of an innocent person." A frown crossed his features. "It never seems to change, does it? No matter where you're from, when you're from, there are always those seeking to prey on the less fortunate. Nice to know humanity doesn't change much," he finished dryly.

"Unfortunately, no. People seem to learn at young ages, you know."

He sipped his coffee again. "I missed the broadcast last night, so I can't confirm or deny anything you might have heard. Besides, it's kind of private business anyway."

How in the hell the squirrels had him pegged for plotting revenge anyway baffled him. Then again...maybe it wasn't so hard for them to surmise given the situation.

He sent a glance back to her. "But of course," he replied midly.

Yes, dammit. She was right. But it'd be so much more gratifying to handle it himself. He'd always been used to the direct approach.

"I'll see what can be done," he offered smoothly with a bit of a nod. He'd told Amber he wouldn't tell anyone and he meant that, up to and including school officials. And really, there was only one person he felt comfortable even discussing it with anyway.

It certainly wasn't Juli.

He didn't care what she thought of him, frankly. And though he was still pissed over the whole incident, he knew he was dealing with a kid. He didn't need her to remind him. It wasn't as if he was planning to actually hurt the little turd boy.

Much.

"I certainly will," he replied calmly, giving away nothing of his thoughts. He finished his coffee in one last go, got up and tipped his hat at her slightly. "Hope you enjoy the rest of your evenin'."

Then he strode out, collecting Houston along the way, not in a much better mood than when he'd gone in.
