Wellspring Arms & Meditation Center, Friday

Rikku knew it was gonna be a crappy day when she got to work and there was a dead skunk lying in front of the door.

Rikku knew it was going to be a worse day when the not-actually-dead skunk sat up just long enough to puke all over the place. Luckily, not on her, or else he would be a dead skunk.

"Wher'm I?" the skunk managed. "Don' ... 'member how I ... got here."

"You'd better move your butt, or you're gonna be roadkill," she snapped.

He must've realized she meant that, because he wobbled off, leaving behind the puke and skunk-smell. Wonderful.

The Wellspring Arms and Meditation Center was open. Just don't expect Rikku to be too thrilled about it.

(OOC: ATTENTION SQUIRRELS! Romeo stopping in to tell Rikku that he and Dojima had a fight is totally okay for broadcast. What Dojima and Romeo fought about is NFB, please and thank you!)

Do not ask about the puke-skunk stench going on outside.

"Do all women lie?"

The impatient question was as close as Romeo would come to hello today, and the skunk vomit on his shoe was not improving his mood any.

Um ... okay? Rikku blinked a few times and shrugged.

"I don't think so?" she said. "Wow. Bad day?"

He gave her a look suggesting his day had been filled with all the woe in the world. "Only the worst of my life."

It was hyperbole, but that was to be expected when Romeo was In a Mood.

"Owwww," she said, frowning. "Okay, first, you get hugs, and then you tell me what's wrong. Okay? 'Cause I know it's not just the skunk-puke. Stupid skunk."

She didn't mean to sound flippant. Just that ... well. Romeo-hyperbole probably needed some hugs.

Hug first. Right. He could do that. "Not the skunk, though they've not improved my day," he agreed.

"Yurika's been lying to me, since I first met her. I know not if I can ever trust her again; I barely want to look at her."

That was a very shocked Rikku, pulling back mid-hug to gape at him.

"No way," she breathed. "Are you serious? What's she been lying about? Has she been cheating on you? Because I'll kill her. Oh my gosh. Are you okay!?"

"Only why she is here, what her place in her world is, what her hopes for after graduation are," Romeo said bitterly. "Small things, I suppose. Don't kill her, she's bound to make that happen on her own."

Place in the ... Rikku frowned. "I don't understand," she said. "Start over. She's been keeping secrets. About ... her home?"

He started pacing as he talked. "Did she tell you what she must do after graduation?" he asked. "She claimed her father set her up to go work for some sort of supernatural police force. That was why I asked her to marry me. She was crying about it."

He looked up, his eyes fierce. "Crocodile tears, to match her snake tongue."

No, he wasn't entirely making sense. Yet.

"She ... never told me," Rikku said, shaking her head. "I didn't wanna ask. I knew it was something bad. And she ... she doesn't, you mean?"

Wow. He'd asked her to marry him, and she'd been lying?

"She chose it herself, Rikku," Romeo said, half angry, half tired. "She's known it was to come for a year and a half, now." He managed a cynical smile. "Apparently mentioning it to me slipped her mind."

Which was unfair, but he wasn't feeling especially fair.

"Wait," Rikku said, trying to follow along. "Okay. She's. Doing some supernatural stuff, and ... said her dad tricked her into it, but ... he didn't, and she never told you?"

It wasn't making a lot of sense, but she had the feeling maybe it didn't for him, either.

"Why?"

A heavy sigh. "She was under orders not to tell, with fearsome consequences if she did," he said. "Or, she says that." There was an undercurrent of she says a lot of things. "And it seems she likes not saying things. I found out from the radio she had a drink with Cal last night, and Cal found out from me that she had a boyfriend."

Because that was getting dragged into this, too.

"I shall never trust a woman again."

"Oh, wow. That's ... do you think ... something happened?" she said uncertainly. "With Cal, I mean. Like, did he say, oh, wow, yeah, we went home, or just drinks? They might be friends. And ..."

She bit her lip, hard. "And ... Reno didn't ... tell me right away, about ... being a Turk, you know? Because ... if he did, he thought bad things would happen. To me or him. If they're really scary, maybe that's ... why?"

"It wasn't a date, with Cal," Romeo admitted. "Some bet between them. Whatever her faults, I don't think she was unfaithful, just ... thoughtless."

He shook his head. "She's known everything about me since Mexico. She should have trusted me. Or, if not, stopped seeing me entirely."

"Did you ... know that she wasn't telling you about this?" Rikku asked. "And ... I mean, what did she say? Why tell you now, if she couldn't yesterday? Are you guys ..."

Vague gesturing; she didn't have the right words for it. Split up? Fighting? Done, for good?

"There's some mission she must undertake to earn her ..." he waved a hand vaguely. "position. She wanted to ask me for help."

He shook his head wearily at Rikku's second question. "Officially, I am taking time to think."

"Wow," Rikku said. "That ... takes some nerve, doesn't it? She doesn't tell you for months, and then she only breaks it to you so she can ask a favor? Nice."

"I know," Romeo said miserably. "She said she would ask you, as well."

"I don't ..." Rikku shook her head. "I don't even know what to say to that. I mean. Is it world-saving stuff, or is she ... I don't even know what this is about. And for her to just lie to you like that? That's so ..."

"It's her trial," he explained. "She needs to show she's prepared to take a witch out."

"It was a pointless, stupid, bloody lie, since I'm not even from her world, and ... I don't know if I could ever look her in the face again, for all she says she loves me. It may be but more words."

"It might," Rikku said. "So she's gonna kill somebody that the priest-whoevers say is evil. I'm sure that's an awesome idea. Religious people don't lie, especially not when they ask you to kill for them. Really."

Rmeo's face bore a scowl when he looked at her, and it wasn't entirely directed at his girlfriend. "You forget I'm religious. And she says killing isn't their first technique. I'm choosing to believe that; I don't want blood on her hands, too."

"Your religion doesn't send you a list of people to kill," Rikku said, narrowing her eyes. "Or does it? I'd hope if they did, you'd say to yourself, my gosh, maybe I should find out if they're guilty or not first. Before you reached for a weapon."

Romeo had neither the energy, or the inclination for this conversation. "I have no desire to argue about faith with you, Rikku, as it's hardly the major question on the table," he told her, eyes narrowed. "It is not the day for me to have such conversations. I'm going to go ... something. I will find you later."

"It's ..." She cut herself off abruptly. It really wasn't the time. "Okay. We'll talk later."

Great. Dojima was killing people for religious crazies, and Romeo was pissed at her for insulting his religion, and her day was just getting better and better.

"Let me know if you need anything? I mean. I'm ... around, yeah?"

"So am I," he said, before stomping off.

Zen. Further from the puke-skunk stench.
