He'd made a few of the visits he'd needed to make already-- a few more were set to be relatively soon, and he needed to get a hold of Constable Fraser to discuss school security. Which made the previous week a productive week, and this one moreso.

And as such, of course, 'Mayor Summers' was on the phone with Irene Merryweather. "And I think we can manage security of the new section of the island if we adopt a new trooper deployment plan."

"So how's that paperwork coming, Nate?"

"As well as it should."

"You ever think maybe you need an assistant?"

"You can't come here right now, Irene."

A sigh. "I know." A pause. "So how is the job?"

"I'm having fun," Cable said, his mouth twitching in a slight smile.

"See," Irene said, "Now that isn't worrying in the least..."

Who might or might not be on the phone.

Given that she'd checked on her dog-related residency issues with her new landlord, Robin figured it couldn't hurt to wander by town hall and check on whether there were any new leash laws or anything, either.

Which was why she was petting her dogs and telling them to be very good dogs before tethering them outside and wandering in, trying her very best not to interrupt if she could avoid it.

It was a credit to his ability to focus in the midst of utter chaos that Cable actually noticed someone coming in who wasn't actually generally present there. He pressed a button on the phone and put it down.

"Hello," he said, before any of the overworked staff had a chance to swoop her aside with one of their patent-pending shooing maneuvers. "...Can I help you?"

It was amazing, the kind of things you learned running a store for a year.

"Hi! Busy morning?" she asked sympathetically.

"The old mayor vanished unexpectedly," Cable noted, handily ignoring the slight buzz the phone was still generating. Irene could produce some vitriol if she felt like it. "I'm handling what he left behind."

She raised a brow. "What, weird face dude? Just how disorganized was he? That was totally a guy who never met a file cabinet. I would so bet it. He was nice, though."

"Fairly," he answered, tossing some more paperwork on his desk, "But I'll live." Mostly. Cable was starting to get a little tired of paperwork, necessary as it might be.

"If you need like, folders and stuff, I have a bunch of extras that came with me from New York," she said, feeling oddly helpful. "'Cause I went through the same thing when I inherited my last job."

"I think we're doing fine on folders," Cable replied, honestly, tapping his pen against a binder. "It's organizing the island in the wake of the move that'll prove to be the challenge. This..." he nodded at his desk, "Is all part of the plan."

"Mm." Robin just nodded wisely, thinking that folders could still totally help the situation. "Plus, school just started so more people are moving, and the American economy is in the tank so people are going to be moving away from places that are more expensive and, honestly, this place is so much cheaper than New York, so I wouldn't be surprised if we have an influx in population, as well. That'd be tough to deal with even with a normal town where no one ever turned into the six year-old selves or found themselves singing everything one day."

"You'd be surprised," he said. Not that Providence could be considered a 'normal' town, seeing as how it was a self-made metal island in the middle of the Pacific ocean, but Cable wasn't going to split hairs. "The island has saved us the trouble of building new housing for the duration." He... needed to make a list of all these kinds of things. Losing track of the details would be bad. "As I said, it's all part of the plan. ...We've also had most of our regular 'incidents' for the year."

He hoped they had.

Robin thought for a moment. "We have regular incidents? I've only been here a year but Benton mentioned some stuff repeats."

"Turning into 6-year-olds," Cable said, "Meeting our alternative universe children, turning into the opposite gender..." He paused. "We'll have to make sure we're prepared for that one."

"I was a hot guy," she told him, remembering fondly. "It freaked Benton out."

"I'm sure Constable Fraser appreciated that later." He managed that half-smile that intimated he was stuck between being amused and being a little bit awkward-judgey.

She tilted her head, thinking. "Well, yeah. And I've been six, and I was a dog for a week, and I turned into my teenage popstar alter-ego -- don't ask, if you don't already know -- and I met my alternate universe son and daughter. Oh, and then I hummed the Slinky song in Hell and spent a week in 1923. In a way this place would totally be considered a goldmine if I was back at Metro News 1, but on the other, no one wold believe me. Not that it stopped my old bosses, paragons of truth that they were, but hey, I have my journalistic reputation to consider and all.'

"I've been told that a journalistic reputation can be 'overrated'," Cable said, wryly, "Although she might have been joking at the time. It's not really my area... Robin Sparkles?"

He did his homework. Irene and her sorority misadventures could attest to that.

"...so you do know," she said, and sighed. "I was impressionable and young! And it all started out as an innocent modeling job!"

"I know a lot of things," he said, sitting back. "You were very spirited."

"I was paid to sing in malls and bounce around like I was on crack," she corrected.

"Which takes spirit," Cable said, dryly, nodding his head once. "So what can I help you with?"

Somewhere, Irene was proud of him for using the word 'help' in a proper context.

Robin had kind of forgotten she came in for anything at all. "Oh, right. Um, so I figured I'd check, since new mayor and all -- are you changing anything as far as leash laws go? 'Cause, you know, seven dogs."

"I was considering going a little easier on them in the park," he noted, pausing as he actually considered the point. Which he already had, in a way; he did have a dog. "With the right technology, we should be able to get a more effective dog waste recycling program going in that area."

"...that sounds...innovative," she offered. "I just wanted to make sure it's still okay to actually let them off their leashes now and then. I mean, they're all very well-behaved. If nothing else, you know Dief, even if he's not actually mine."

Well, it was still dog poo. But they could use a few more sources of clean--

He would just leave that alone until the next planning stages. "You're free to do so in the park," he told her. "Just be careful where they 'go' for the time being..."

"I'll keep an eye on them," she assured him. "And speaking of, I should go make sure they haven't like, eaten some matches they found or something. See you later!"

With a smile and a little wave, she headed back out.

Cable shook his head.

And then he picked up the phone. "Irene?"

"Okay," she shot back, "Two things. One: you need to hire that woman. Two: you 'forgot' to turn off the phone on purpose, didn't you?!"

"Is that your official suggestion?" he asked, drumming his fingers on the desk.

"I hate you sometimes, you know that, right?"

His lips twitched. "So," he said, "About the Rumeki recycling program..."
