Atlas Gym, Tuesday morning-ish, September 30
Murdock was a little late arriving to the gym, having another small errand to take care of. Of course, the limp didn't help him move any faster either.
And he really didn't have much of an idea of how to work around it for Amber's usual session either.
He'll probably think of something, however.
(the usual meetup, but totally open if anyone else wants to join in :)

Instead of 'hey' when she saw him come in, she frowned and asked, "Why are you limping?"
no subject
"How are you?"
Let's change the subject and see how that works, yes?

She just stood there and gave him that look of hers.

"It's nothing?" he tried, with a bit of a smile. "Just part of a bit of work I was doin' over the weekend."
Like the unplanned part.

"You know what I do besides teaching, right? Well, things hit a bit of a snag. Wasn't exactly planning to get rolled off a forklift."
Which was better than the alternative.

"It was better that way, trust me."
no subject
Oh my god someone was going to get hurt.

He looked at her. "My other 'job' ain't exactly easy work."

"We help people out when they got nobody else to turn to. Don't get me wrong, I like what I do, but sometimes, it can get a little rough." And that was about as close as he was going to say 'mercenary' outright. He wasn't sure how she'd react to that.
"There's a reason I know how to fight, Amber."
no subject
And what he gave her was good enough. She nodded, but didn't seem to much like it.
"I know that, but I don't like you getting hurt, even if you are helping people. Call me selfish."
no subject
No, he didn't realize how that quite sounded. Although it was true.

Damn. He sucked in a large breath.
"Sorry. Didn't mean to take that out on you. It's just kinda frustrating sometimes. People don't mind if you sacrifice yourself fighting pointless battles, but tryin' to do something that might do actual good, and they get all pissy 'bout it."
"Never made much sense to me."
no subject
She paused, stared hard at him. "Now you know what I think about it so I don't have to say it again."
no subject
"I understand," he nodded. "And I can understand the rest of it too. But," he looked back up at her, "the guys I work with are more than just teammates. They're my family. The only one I got. I have to stick with 'em. 'Cause they'd do the same for me."
no subject
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean anything other than, you know," she shrugged a shoulder, "I just care about you. I get the family thing. I do."
no subject
"I know." He stepped over to her and moved to pull her into a hug. "I can't for the life of me understand why, but I certainly don't mind. I care 'bout you too."

He squeezed her tight too. "It ain't always like that either. Usually things go down real smooth and nobody gets hurt."
Aside from the usual few punches, that is.
"This really isn't the norm," he said, in an attempt to ease her worry somewhat.
If only he knew what was coming.
