Covent Garden Flowrs: Thursday, 10/2

This morning found Eliza glaring distastefully at the empty mailbox that ought, by all rights, to have an "E" in it by now. She'd sent a note - terribly polite - off to the supposedly wonderful suppliers who were meant to have outfitted the place, but it was going on a week without a blind bit of response whatsoever, let alone the return of her wandering letter.

Perhaps she'd have to make an E out of ribbon and wire and bung it up on the sign above the door herself until a proper one arrived? Then again, she'd have to find a ladder for that, and there wasn't one of those lying about either.

There was still a sign in the window, though.

Ino still felt wretched, but somewhat less so considering she'd gotten back from work last night and slept straight through to just past noon today. After a fruitless attempt to concentrate on her studies, she resorted to listening to podcasts of radio and discovering there was a flower shop in town now.

There was no way, after learning that, that Ino was going to be able to resist leaving the dorms to check it out. So, she stepped inside the shop, bundled up in both a turtleneck and Romeo's hoodie, and glad enough that the medication seemed to be working today.

"Hello?" Ino said, glancing around.

Eliza looked up, face still caught in a frustrated scowl, but it quickly faded to a more polite smile when she realized it was a customer.

"Hello! I'm Eliza Doolittle; welcome to my shop." Disarray and missing letters notwithstanding, she couldn't help the note of pride that colored the last two words.

Ino quirked a bit of a grin at the pride. She could get that, yeah. "I'm Ino," she said easily, still scoping the place out, "I heard we'd gotten a flower shop in town and just had to come check it out. It's nice to meet you."

"And you as well!" Eliza dusted potting soil off her skirt and scooped a handful of cut gentian stalks off the counter where she'd been preparing to add them to a vase. "I'm sorry for the mess; things were in a bit of a state when I arrived."

"It's not a problem," she said, "did you need any help getting things in order?"

"It's mostly down to what's not here to put in order, is the problem," Eliza answered. "But I am looking for some shop assistants, still."

Did she really need another job? Ino rather doubted it, and yet at the same time knew good and well that if she didn't offer to be an assistant that no doubt she'd find herself wandering around and wanting to help out in the shop anyway... so why not get paid for it?

"My parents own a flower shop back home," she said, mentally going over her schedule and deciding that so help her, but she thought she had the time, "so I've got experience. What days did you need?" A beat. "And what are your hours, if you don't mind me asking?"

"Really? That would be very helpful." If not a little disconcerting that she might be hiring someone with more experience than Eliza herself had. Granted that applied to anyone who'd ever sold flowers - or anything else - out of something besides a basket.

"Any of the weekdays except Wednesday would be fine," she added. "From nine to four, I should think, though deliveries might have to be ~~oh so handwavily~~ made a bit earlier when we have them."

Ino considered that. "I can do Tuesdays, if you'd like," she said, "I don't have any classes, or anything then. And, yeah, totally know my way around a flower shop."

"Tuesdays would be lovely," Eliza replied. "You're at school, then?"

She bobbed her head. "Yes, though really, I've only got classes on Monday and Friday." A bit of a grin. "I'm on the Student Council though, so that takes up a bit more time, and I've got clinic work and another job too, so, yes. Tuesday's are good though!"

Ino was babbling a bit. She was going to blame the glee of getting to work in a flower shop again.

"You have school and two jobs?" Eliza repeated, impressed. "Or no, three now. When do you find time to sleep?"

"I tend to go to sleep pretty early most nights," she said, though that depended too on your definition of early. "I mean, there's exceptions, but yeah, and I get up at four so if I've got anything that needs to be done then, I've got the time."

It helped, really, that Fandom wasn't high on homework.

Eliza was no stranger to waking early - back at Covent Garden if you showed up at the market after the sun rose you'd be hawking everybody else's wilted leavings the rest of the day. She'd gone spoiled, though, these past months, with a warm bed and fresh sheets to lounge about in.

"I can't imagine getting up so early if you don't have to," she confessed. "I'm afraid I've grown accustomed to sleeping in."

"Yeah?" Ino asked, tilting her head. "Did once, and don't now?"

Eliza nodded her agreement. "I used to sell flowers on the street." She didn't see any reason, here and now, to deny that.

Huh. Okay.

"Congratulations on getting a store then," she said, smiling. "That's a big change."

Eliza laughed. "You have no idea. And thank you."

The rusted nails fell from the knots that held the pear to the gable-wall.

Still hiring and sorting out a schedule, so posts might be more plentiful for the moment than they'll eventually end up.
