Covent Garden Flowrs, Monday, 10/6

This morning found the sign over the door still E-less, and Eliza glaring daggers at the neatly-typed (terribly neatly typed - not an ink-splotch anywhere) letter that had arrived in the post from her suppliers. Her E was on something called "back order" and would be arriving sometime around the thirteenth of Never, if she read properly between the terribly neatly-typed lines.

Right, then. She had wire, ribbons, and rather a larger supply of violets than she knew what to do with. Surely she could make her own E, even if she eventually had to replace it when they started to wilt...

The hand-lettered sign in the window had taken the brunt of her frustrations, poor thing, as it now read:

Covent Garden Flowers

Eliza Doolittle, prop.
Fresh flowers from nosegays to bouquets!
Delivery available upon request.

Joan was out and about exploring the town.

She saw the Now Hiring sign in the window and decided to stop in. It would be nice to have some spending money that she didn't have to rely on her parents for.

"Hello?"

Eliza looked up from her task, which was mostly a shapeless mass of wire, so far. "Oh, hello! Welcome to Covent Garden Flowers. I'm Eliza Doolittle."

Joan smiled. "I'm Joan Girardi and I noticed that you're hiring."

Eliza smiled back. She'd given up wondering about all the foreign accents by now; clearly the place up the hill took in girls from all over the world, or some such.

"I am. I've got help for Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but the rest of the week is still open. Are you a student at the school as well?"

"Yes, I am," Joan said. "I have classes on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, so how about Mondays? Or sometime on the weekend?"

"Mondays would be lovely, if you like!" Perhaps she exaggerated a little. Mondays were Mondays, even where and when Eliza was from. They were seldom anything like lovely. Or even loverly.

Joan and her player would agree that Mondays were seldom lovely. But she smiled anyway. "Sure. What all would I need to do?"

"Sell flowers, I hope," Eliza answered pertly, with a laugh. "And make haaaaaandwavy deliveries, if we have orders for them."

"I think I can manage that," Joan said with a smile.

"And if anybody comes round telling you to put marbles in your mouth? You feel free to chase him off with the broom." She felt this advice, which hadn't occurred to her to share with the other girls but she'd definitely do so later, was necessary to impart.
