Covent Garden Flowers, Tuesday

Ino was, if you wanted to be technical, a few minutes late to her shift—but only because she’d gotten sidetracked by making a new ‘e’ for the sign and forgot to switch the store to open. So, really, she’d been there perfectly on time, just… well. Either way, she hung her ‘e’ up (it was made of floral wire and yellow ribbon) and settled in for a day of ~~playing~~ working with plants. And humming.

And doing a wee bit of fretting about tonight.

Fishing mission successful, as Romeo tried to wrap his head around flowers rejecting a mate.

"I'm not sure this person could be less my type if she tried," he said, rather bluntly.

"Hinata thought she was my wife over the weekend. She left me a note when she was back to herself, so I suspect she'd rather not talk to me just now, and I've no need to drive it from my side. But I still owe her something, don't I?" The not-wanting-to-talk thing might have been a tiny bit mutual.

Ino wasn't kidding about a whole other language.

"...Hinata," yeah, that was getting staring, "...your wife? The one..."

...

"Oh dear." Um. Yeah. "Ow. Flowers are a good thing, yeah, she'll appreciate that a lot more than talking." A searching glance at him. "How're you?"

"The dead one?" Romeo finished her sentence. "I do only have the one, you know."

He tried to shake it off. "I'm fine. I listened to radio this morning and it sounds like I didn't even have the worst of it, so ... just one more odd story from the island."

"I never said you had more than that," she said, frowning at him. "Don't snip at me just 'cause you had a bad weekend, yeah? How's Dojima-san?"

Ino shook her head. "Purple Hyacinth means I'm sorry, please forgive me, and sorrow. That'd be the one you want then for the focus. Hydrangea can mean 'thank you for understanding' so I'd suggest that as well. And Baby's Breath is always a good filler, it means, simply, pure of heart--so that adds to the intention of the apology. You, in good faith, are sorry for the sorrow caused, please forgive me and thank you for understanding."

She looked at him expectantly for his judgment.

"She did better than I would have expected," Romeo said. (Especially, he thought, with the pregnancy drama, but that story was Yurika's to share.) "So we're fine, if shaken. And I apologize for my temper."

He thought about her suggestion. "Remind me what hydrangeas look like, but the message itself sounds exactly right."

That got a bit of a grin. "They're right over here," Ino said, slipping from behind the counter to stand beside a display of hydrangeas. "What do you think?"

"I like them," Romeo said. "You can deliver the arrangement to her at school, can't you? I'll trust you on the design, though I do need to write a card."

She not quite bounced on the way back to the counter, though she did take a detour for a few seconds to get a single flower. Ino said nothing about that one quite yet though.

"We've got an assortment of cards," she said, giving the card rack a little pat, "so pick the one you like, and yes, we do deliver."

Romeo gave the flower a curious glance, but assumed it must have something to do with another order. He could hardly be the shop's only customer, after all.

He selected an ivory card with a red border on the scalloped edges and wrote, going very slowly to get his scattered thoughts right:

Dear Hinata -

Thank you for your note. I understand the island can be cruel, and I would never blame you for anything that happened.

These flowers are meant as a token of my sorrow that you had to bear her burden for the weekend; Ino assures me they're fitting. And if you ever wish to talk about any of it, let me know. - Romeo Montague

He sealed it in a tiny envelope and passed it back across the counter.

"I think that's as close as I can come to saying what needs to be said."

Ino had busied herself while he was writing (she was a snoop, but seriously, not going to sink that low) with working out what she'd need, and more importantly, how much it'd all cost for the flowers for this arrangement. And also in wrapping the lone flower in pale pink tissue. With a little ribbon. Ino was a dork.

She nodded. "The flowers will help," Ino said, smiling. "And awkward phrasing can mean more than smooth words when the situation like this."

There was a flicker of a smile across his face. "I'm good with words, but not so good as to be smooth about this," Romeo admitted, then cocked his head at the flower she was wrapping. "You have another order?"

"It's Lemon Blossom. You're giving it to Dojima-san," Ino said brightly. "And you're not allowed to argue with me. Or pay for it. Or do anything but smile and nod at me and give it to her."

Yeah.

Romeo eyed the flower suspiciously even as he pulled out his wallet to pay for the rest of his order. "It doesn't mean 'your boyfriend sucks, break up with him yesterday,' does it?"

"No," Ino said softly, smiling. "I wouldn't do that. It means 'I promise to be true'. Now, of course, if you don't then I'll beat you over the head, but..."

Romeo's grin slowly spread, taking up almost his entire face. "I'll live up to the flower," he promised. "And ... thank you."

"Anytime," she said, because grins like that were worth it. Ino offered him the flower, so she could get his change for the other flowers. "Love's pretty amazing."

And Romeo was seriously the only person she would admit that to so freely.

The grin got even broader, if such a thing were possible, or maybe it was just the sparkle in Romeo's eyes. "It truly is."

She passed him back his change, and shook her head fondly at him.

"Go," she said, "go chase love, and I'll keep dreaming of it."

"It'll find you, in its time," Romeo promised. "I'll see you."

"I'm not the most patient person around," Ino laughed. "I'll see you."
