Kaylee had definitely not slept really late. And she certainly was not rushing into work with her hair flying all over and her shirt still only half-buttoned.

...okay, she buttoned it up and smoothed her hair as soon as she was behind the counter, because no one needed to see that, but still. Close call.

Ben popped his head into the shop. "Hello!"

"I wasn't late!" Kaylee cried on impulse. "Oh. It's you. Hi!"

Ben snickered. "Of course you weren't," he said. "The thought never crossed my mind."

"Better not have," she said, mock-threateningly.

"Or what would you do to me?" he asked, sounding oh-so-terribly frightened.

"You don't even wanna know," she said, in a truly terrifying sort of way, really.

Ben burst out laughing. "That terrifying, huh?"

She giggled. "I'm real fearsome-like, yeah."

"I've heard that about you," he said solemnly. "So, did you go insane last weekend, too?"

"I got some new endowments," she gestured to her chest, "an' cried over everything, an' told my boyfriend the priest that I'm in love with him, an' made everyone call me my first name which I hate. So yeah."

"Kaylee isn't your first name?" Ben asked.

"S'a nickname," she said, blushing already. "Kinda a mashup of my first an' middle names."

"It can't be that bad," Ben encouraged. "I was almost named Obi-Wan."

She giggled at that, and dropped her voice to confidential tones. "Try Kaywinnit Lee on for size."

Ben gave her a grin. "Okay, that's a bit of a mouthful."

"See?" she said, smiling.

"I bet it made it easy to find out when you were in trouble, though," Ben mused. "When that whole name comes out...wow."

"Yuh huh," she agreed, wide-eyed. "It was always real clear when my mama was cross with me."

"It was always clear when Mom was unhappy with me, too," Ben said. "She has a tone."

"I think you get those when you have kids," Kaylee said wisely.

"Or become a teacher," Ben said. "My cousin Jacen has one too, and he doesn't have kids."

"Maybe," she considered. "I kinda want one."

"A kid or a cousin Jacen?" Ben asked, grinning.

"A mom tone, actually," she said, smiling. "Though I kinda want a kid when I'm bigger."

"I haven't thought about it," Ben said. "My family's messy enough as it is."
