Coyote Medicine, Monday

Coyote had spent most of the weekend on a drunken bender with his new cockroach friend.

Customers might wanna stay out of the men's room.

He'd spotted a few other signs around town, though, and decided that if he wanted more ~~minions~~ employees, he'd have to advertise better. Which is why the hiring sign was now just as big and sparkly as the rest of the thing.

Coyote Medicine was open. Complete with half-naked Indian man playing the drum outside.

He'll assure you, getting slightly smashed on cheap beer and drumming randomly was totally a long held Crow tradition.

Murdock was out for a walk with Houston when he spotted the new shop. He knew several places had just opened, but he hadn't gotten around to checking them out yet.

He stood a ways away, not wanting to disturb the man's drumming.

Coyote wasn't exactly known for being the most observant native spirit, but he did tend to realize when he was being watched. It made him feel happy.

He looked up and waved to the white man and said "how" in a low, serious voice.

And then started giggling. Man, that never got old. . . .

That got a raised eybrow and Murdock wondered for a minute he should offer a 'how' in return.

But giggling is rather infectous, and he wound up grinning in return.

"Hey."

Coyote took a swig from a brown paper bag and set the drum aside. "You've come to shop? Or seek your spirit helper?"

Coyote decided this man's spirit helper might be a wombat. He didn't know what a wombat was, really, but it sounded interesting.

"I dunno," he replied, stuffing his hands in his pockets.

Houston started wandering towards Coyote, curious.

"Just window shoppin', I guess."

Coyote sniffed in the general direction of Houston, also curious.

"But I don't have any windows in stock. I suppose I could get them . . . but they will be very expensive."

Houston came closer, tail wagging a bit, trying to figure if Coyote was friendly or not.

Murdock grinned then started laughing. "Not that kinda shoppin', dude. I mean I was just lookin' around."

"Then that is what you should say," Coyote pointed out. He offered a hand towards Houston for a sniff. "Your human friend there is a little foolish, eh?" he said. "He could use a good spirit helper, I think."

Something smart. Ants were supposed to be smart, right?

"Maybe," he replied, watching Houston as he sniffed Coyote's hand. "A spirit helper? I dunno about that."

"And I'm not foolish," he protested with a slight frown.

Call it a habitual reaction.

"All men are foolish," Coyote said, in one of his somewhat rare moments of wisdom. "It is both his strength and his downfall." Then he grinned, and the wise moment was gone. "You want a hat? We have many hats, cowboy or Indian."

"I suppose that's true," he agreed slowly.

"Hats?" Now he perked up. "I might could use a new one."

He did like hats.

"Well, I might could have a good one for you!" Coyote downed the last of whatever was in that paper bag, tossed it over his shoulder, and clapped his hands. "Come on in, let's see what we can find."

Grinning, Murdock headed over. Houston followed along.

"Oooh, I might could use one for a friend of mine too! I'm sure he'll love a hat!"

BA might not agree though.

"Everyone loves a hat!" Coyote cried. He pointed out some of the big cowboy hats hanging on the wall beside the full feathered headdresses. "Do you like big hats, colored hats, maybe a party hat?"

So many choices, he had to think about that. "I like all kinds," he grinned. "I have quite a collection."

"My friend might like a cowboy hat. Or maybe a sombrero. Got any of those?"

Coyote nodded. "Of course I have sombreros!" He'd say that even if he didn't know what a sombrero was, but in this case, it was actually true. "They're very good hats, especially for keeping the bird spirits from seeing what you're up to."

"Perfect! Anything to keep people from seein' what my buddies are up to! My friend will love it!"

Somewhere far off, BA was groaning.

"I'll go get it for you." Coyote quickly ducked into the back room and returned with a very large and somewhat floppy straw sombrero with blue and yellow embroidered trim. "This is our best sombrero in stock! Lots of coverage."

"Cool, man! He'll love it!"

No he won't.

"I'll have to take some time to figure what kinda hat I'd want. Think about it overnight, ya know. It's a big decision, getting a new hat."

Coyote nodded. "That's very true, and I won't rush your decision. But how about this? I'll sell you this hat now for your friend, and if you come back tomorrow to buy a hat for you, I'll give you 25% off."

He grinned. "Sweet dude! Heck ya, I'll go for that!"

"How much do I owe ya for this? And what were you thinkin' for that spirit animal bit?" Kind of curious about that.

It was a good deal. Especially if Coyote managed to refrain from just giving Murdock three-quarters of a hat. "For this hat . . . nineteen ninety-five." Coyote held out the sombrero proudly. "And for the spirit helper . . . I can give you guidance. A little fasting, a little walking, get a vision, make your medicine and tada! Success is yours for the taking!"

Murdock nodded and handed over some cash while he considered the other.

"I reckon I could do that. What all does a spirit helper do?"

"It helps you." There was really only the barest hint of dryness to Coyote's tone. "And is your connection to the spirit world. It can make you better in many ways. Depends on the animal. Bear and Eagle, for instance, they are very strong warrior spirits, and their medicine means you are the best in a battle."

"How 'bout for flyin'?" he asked seriously. "I'm a pilot. Be useful if I could find an animal that covers that."

Coyote shrugged. "There are many bird spirits. It's likely one will choose you."

"Cool. I'd like to find out which, if you have time to show me some day."

Coyote nodded. "Vision quest and spirit helper services. Thirty-nine ninety nine, plus cost of sweat lodge and medicine bundle."

"Seems reasonable," he nodded. "When's a good day?"

Murdock sometimes such a sucker.

Coyote considered this very carefully. Technically, the process of connecting to one's spirit animal was a rite of passage that took many months of preparation and possibly days of fasting in the wild. But Coyote wasn't exactly known for his patience, and this guy wasn't a nine year old Crow child, so he figured they could do a quickie version.

"Wednesday?"

He frowned a bit. "I do office hours on Wednesdays. And I have class Thursday morning. But I'm open Thursday afternoon or Friday."

And who knows? Mabye Murdock would gain something useful out of it.

Hmmm. Coyote had Thursday off, and he was loathe to work on his day off. Same with Friday ~~plus his mun was always super busy on Fridays~~. "Maybe next week? It'll give me more time to prepare materials for you."

"Sounds good to me!" he grinned. "This will be cool!"

Coyote wondered what temperature had to do with it. "Yes! Especially since it's fall."

Murdock just looked at him, some mild confusion evident. He had no idea what Coyote meant.

"Uh...Yah. Sure."

"Does it make a difference to what season it is?"

"It does if you want to be cool. Early spring would also work. But winter is usually cold, and summer's very hot."

Now Murdock was giving him a totally blank stare. "Okay...I'll keep that in mind."

Really no clue what he was talking about now.

Coyote figured they had everything cleared up now. "So I will see you tomorrow for you hat!"

"Uh, yah. Sure."

Not knowing what else to say, Murdock whistled a bit to get Houston moving and headed out.
