MHA Lobby, Wednesday Late Afternoon

After sparring with Tyler in the gym, Loki wandered back to his stupid job in the sort of nice apartments he sort of managed and flopped down behind the desk. He didn't intend on working but he liked being able to see people walk past.

It was easier to flirt with people that way.

Pepper was hanging up her phone as she strode in, looking as tidy as ever despite having spent the better part of the day on a plane. She smiled easily at the man behind the desk. "Good afternoon."

"It's always a good afternoon here at MHA," he said with false cheer. That was, of course, before he actually looked up to see who was talking to him.

Goddamn presumptions.

Pepper raised an eyebrow. "Is that your slogan?"

"Oh, fuck no," he said and nearly gagged. "Slogans are cheap hooks that prey on the unsuspecting. Give someone a cheap ass jingle and they'll buy any goddamn products you want."

Pepper stared for a long moment, not exactly...fazed by the language, but still. Wow.

"...is there someone I could speak with about renting an apartment?"

"You're speaking to him," he said and smiled. "People are moving into this town like bees to fucking honey and I'm not allowed to leave. I'm missing something about the charm of this place."

"You're the landlord?" Pepper asked, flat-out staring now.

"Yeah," he said . "I don't have a badge or anything to prove it. Though, that'd kind of be really damn handy to have. Whip it out at people and try and get them to do shit for me just because I run their apartment complex."

Pepper cleared her throat and considered looking for another place.

...she was going to kill Tony.

"Well. I'd like to rent an apartment, please. Somewhere above the first floor."

"What? You don't wanna bunk with me?" Loki asked. "I'm hurt. I'm a good roommate."

Pepper looked mildly horrified for a moment before composing herself. "...no, thank you."

"Oh my god, lady, I was fucking kidding," he said, staring at her. "Lighten up a little."

"It's hard to tell, considering I keep getting distracted by your language choices," Pepper said lightly.

"Are you the language police too?" Loki asked. "Last person who tried this on me was like three feet tall. Did she grow up and turn into you?"

"Nope," Pepper said briskly. "It's just...distracting. That's all."

"Tell me to stop," Loki said, a little bit of a challenge in his voice.

"It's your choice to use whatever vocabulary you want," she told him, shrugging.

"Then, don't let it fucking distract you," he said, shrugging right back. "I speak like this all the time. It's cultural."

"And where I'm from, it's disrespectful," Pepper said calmly. "But clearly your culture is different from mine, and I'll try to keep myself from being distracted."

Yeah, that wouldn't be happening.

"Now, an apartment?"

"Oh, right, the reason you came in before you started insulting my culture," he said, bullshitting up a storm because he could. "What was your preference?"

Pepper just took a deep breath, ignoring him. "Anything above ground level. It's just me, so I don't need too much space."

"This place doesn't do room service," he felt obligated to warn. "Some guy thought we did so I'm getting that out of the way. Those legs able to carry you up three flights of stairs?"

"Yes. In four-inch heels. Every single day," she said flatly, trying to cut off any retorts.

He just smiled at her and reached for some paperwork.

"Aren't you just pleasant as peach fucking pie?"

"I get that a lot."

She didn't, but it seemed like a thing that might appease him.

"I'm sure you do," he said. "Sign all the crap where it says to sign. I don't care what you do as long as you don't expect me to come fix shit in the middle of the night."

"I can take care of myself," she assured him, actually smiling as she signed.

"Sure, fine," he said. "Have fun with the first leaky faucet you come across."

"Leaky faucets are ridiculously easy to fix. You must be used to dealing with very stupid and needy clientele," Pepper said easily.

"Stupid people in general, actually," he said. "You'd be fucking amazed."

"You'd be surprised," Pepper said dryly.

"I'm never surprised anymore," he said and smiled. "Unless someone's intent on surprising me and then I can fake it."

Pepper returned the smile. "Well, I'm more than used to dealing with the incredibly, brilliantly stupid. I think I'd like to go look at my apartment now, though."

"Have a pleasant fucking day," he said and he did actually smile. "And all that."

"And you," Pepper said crisply.

He's there, looking rather winded by happy.

Is it time to go home yet?
