Coyote thought it was rather lame that people only dressed up and went about offering tricks one day a year.

If anyone wanted to offer him a trick, today, he'd love that person forever. . . .

Coyote just found a bunch of rain sticks in the back. You might catch him turning one over and over, fascinated with the noise it made.

He's here, he's shirtless, he's ready to make a deal.

Okay, so it had been too long since Claire got stoned and this seemed like the kind of place that might have some quasi-legal substances for sale.

Don't judge her.

"Hey," she called out as she entered, glancing around the store.

"Welcome to my store!" Coyote called. "How may I help you spend your money?"

"I was just looking at the herbs," Claire said, sounding guilty even though she didn't mean to. And then she took a fuller look at the speaker, and her hand involuntarily fluttered through her hair. "Hiiii. So do you work here?"

Dumb question, she knew.

Coyote gave her an amused smirk. "This is my store. I'm Coyote."

"Claire," Claire offered. "Awesome name."

She had gone back to inspecting the shelves. "You have a lot of cool Native American stuff," she observed. "I like it."

[OOC: Canonically, Claire knows a lot more about Native American spirituality, at least of the Castaneda variety, than I do. Handwaviness ahoy.]

"You like it? It was the last one available." Coyote was quite pleased to meet someone besides Annja who knew her stuff. "But Great Spirit threw in some good gifts with it. What kind of herbs were you looking for?"

"Last one available?" Claire was intrigued. "So you got to choose it? And I'm looking for anything that would be ... sort of recreationally interesting."

If he didn't get it, she'd buy whatever else he suggested.

Coyote shrugged. "If I'd gotten to the naming on time, I would have." He looked around the shop. "Recreational? Like peyote?"

Claire decided he was talking about some kind of religious naming ceremony. "Awesome," she said again. "You have peyote?"

No, she hadn't tried it.

Coyote considered this. "I probably have some in the back."

Claire's eyes went wide. "Seriously? I thought it was for religious rituals only."

Which begged the question of why she had asked for it, yes.

"You'd be amazed at how many things can be religious rituals if you know how to explain 'em right." Coyote grinned.

What? Irreverence went right along with the whole 'trickster' thing.

"You could do a vision quest. Find your spirit helper and make your medicine. Peyote can be good for that."

Claire took a long, long moment to think about this. "A vision quest, huh?" she asked. "I read about that in Castaneda. Did you do one?"

Coyote sighed inwardly. She didn't get it.

"No. Animal spirits don't go on vision quests."

Claire was deciding maybe he'd had just a little too much peyote.

"I didn't ask about animal spirits," she said, very clearly. "I asked about you."

She was a little dense, wasn't she.

"Yes," Coyote said. "I know."

Claire groaned. "So you're an animal spirit running a new age store on an island in Maryland? Please. I'm not some moron you can be woo-woo at."

Definitely too much peyote.

"Woo-woo?" Coyote shook his head. "Humans."

And then he seamlessly shifted from being man-shaped to being raven-shaped. And, just for fun, croaked "Nevermore!"

What? Coyote had definitely been around long enough to discover the classics (or at least the TV adaptations and parodies of the classics).

Claire blinked. And stared. And kept her mouth open enough to draw flies.

"I think," she finally decided, "this place is way more strange than any drugs could make it."

"...sorry?"

Coyote shifted back just as seamlessly. "Drugs might make it easier to handle," he suggested helpfully. "Or a spirit helper. You look like you could be a cottontail kinda girl."

"I look like a rabbit to you?" Claire was intrigued (and had managed to get a little less bug-eyed.)

"Well, not physically. And Cottontail might disagree with me. He does that."

"Does he work here too?" Claire asked, because it seemed as logical as anything else. "And so, what, I'm a rabbit spiritually?"

She still didn't get it. But she was trying.

"No, he's probably sulking in the spirit world because more people tell my stories than his." Coyote shrugged. "Do you think you're a rabbit, spiritually?"

Claire shrugged back at him. "I never thought of it that way, i don't get mad carrot jones or anything. What's he like?"

"He's a little like me. I am the Great Hare on the East Coast, after all. He can be sneaky, and very impulsive."

"Like, sometimes he does dumb things because they seemed like the right thing at the time?" Claire asked, remembering a certain foot. "I ... can see that. You don't wanna hesitate and miss out."

"Exactly!"

"So what would I do if I wanted to try the peyote vision quest thing?" Claire's tone was still half-scoffing, but ... she sort of meant it.

"Well, first you'd need to have a sweat. A good long one, to purify yourself. Then you'd fast for a bit, get your peyote, and head out into the wilderness alone with no food or water until your spirit helper shows up to talk to you."

"I'll think about that," Claire said, twisting a strand of hair in thought. "I don't so much get along with the wilderness."

"That's sad," Coyote said, without condemnation. "It's where you come from."

Claire felt vaguely embarrassed. "True. You have to go back a really long way, though."

"It's important to remember these things."

Clean and ready, just waiting to purify you.

I was all like "yay, maintenance won't be waking me up at 9 AM any more!" and then this morning realized they're working on the building next to mine, which means I still have to deal with construction noises at 9 all week. . . .
