It was Teddy's first day at the new job. In a comic book store.

Oh, this could not end well for anyone involved.

He was busy pouring over the back issues of Y-Men that he was missing and wondering if he got an employee discount if he bought them all...

Sarah was a little surprised to see Teddy already at work when she got in, and she cleared her throat loudly. "Morning," she said. "Reading anything interesting?"

Teddy jumped slightly, closing the TPB. "Just a few back issues I never got my hands on," He said. "Is it okay to read on the job?"

"I think we'd get pretty bored if we didn't," Sarah said, smiling slightly. "It's retail. You have to find something to do between customers or you'll lose your mind."

"I would ask if you'd opened the store okay, but I can see that you did," she added.

"I've been here a few times before you bought the place, Teddy admitted.

"I got that idea Thursday," Sarah nodded. "It's good, though, having employees who know what they're doing. What's the story you were reading about?"

She was trying to learn.

"One fo the old story-arcs of the Y-Men. Aliens and cosmic powers and all that."

The usual.

"All that," Sarah echoed, and there was a long pause as she steeled herself to ask a very strange question in a lifetime of them.

"Time for a completely crazy question," she warned him, putting a little bit of a laugh in her tone. "Do things like that happen here, or have people been pulling the new girl's leg?"

Teddy paused. "What kinda things?"

"Um," she frowned, organizing some comics by cover date order so she wouldn't have to look at this nice kid while she asked her completely and utterly insane question. "Aliens. Cosmic powers. All of that. I already met a talking frog and got told about invasions?"

"Oh. Well, yeah. Weird things happen here all the time," Teddy replied. "I was a girl for a little while. And a puppy."

Sarah studied him for a second. "I'm not always great at getting jokes," she warned, "... but I'm thinking you aren't joking."

Her bosses were so dead.

Teddy shook his head and shrugged. "You kinda just get used to it after a while."

"I'm starting to get that impression," Sarah said. "I didn't really get much of a warning before I came here. On .... well, anything."

Before class and before work was pretty early, as far as Chad was concerned, but he said he'd stop in and see Teddy on his first day, so Teddy would just have to forgive him that his greeting was little more than a grunt.

Teddy grinned anyway, waving an issue of Bitter Woman at him. "You came!"

Chad grunted again; it would seem, based on how he held up a drink carrier with two cups and a paper bag from the Perk, that Chad's grunt indicated that he was alerting Teddy to the fact that he brought coffee and muffins.

Clearly, he hadn't gotten to the coffee quite yet.

"You drink the coffee," Teddy said patiently. "I'll have a muffin."

He needed it.

Chad grunted a grunt that suggested there was more than enough coffee for the both of them. Still, he set the offering on the counter and didn't waste any time in picking up his cup for a sip.

Teddy waited for him to get at least some caffeine in his system. "Thank you for coming in so early."

Chad grunted, taking another long sip, before any words came out. "Got class later, then work myself."

"I'll make it up to you," He promised.

"What are you talking about?" Chad asked, frowning. "You don't have to make it up to me. If anything, I owe you for interruptin'."

"interrupting me reading?" Teddy snorted. "Next time I'll bring coffee too."

"Well, you know," Chad shrugged, waving a hand. "Comics and stuff."
