Kaylee had a Project.

Having finished the cell phone thingamajiggie for Mr. Stark, she had been inspired earlier this week.

And so now she was making a present. Whether it would be a Christmas present or just a 'Hey, you're awesome and so is your dog!' present would really depend on how quick she finished it.

So maybe Tony really did Pepper to keep him in the loop on some things, so now was when he finally came to see about that cell phone from Kaylee.

"Kaylee?"

"Yes sir?" Kaylee answered, bouncing on her toes and waving at him as she set aside the lengths of scrap material she was starting to lay out. "How are you today, Mr. Stark?"

Ben poked his head into the shop. "Hey."

"Hiya!" Kaylee said, waving the beginning of a mechanical hand at him.

Ben blinked. "Someone have a lightsaber injury?"

"No, it's for a friend of mine," she told him. "Not a injured one."

"He just collects arms? Weird."

"No, he..." Kaylee fumbled for an excuse, because she couldn't tell why Ned needed it. "Is just real short an' needs t'reach stuff."

Ben blinked again. "And a ladder's too easy?"

"It just gives me somethin' to do," she said, shrugging lightly.

"I have about ten thousand droid parts all over my carpet doing the same thing," Ben admitted.

She smiled. "So how've you been? Ain't seen you for some time."

"It's been a long few weeks," he admitted. "Did anyone make it for Parents Weekend for you?"

Avoiding the subject? Yes.

She shook her head. "My parents can't afford the trip," she admitted. "But I met a guy who was from my future!"

"Husband?" he teased.

"I ain't sure I'd mind that," she said thoughtfully. "He was pretty cute. But no, he said I'm a mechanic! On a ship!"

"That's great," Ben said, smiling for the first time in two weeks. "I had a shuttle here a couple times this week, but I was coming and going so fast I didn't think to show it to you."

"Where were you off to?" she wondered.

"Home," Ben said, the smile disappearing as fast as it had arrived.

She frowned. "Everything all right?" she asked carefully.

"My mom died."

"Oh, Ben," Kaylee breathed, her heart sinking as she hurried around the counter to hug him. "Bao bei, why didn't you say nothin' 'fore now? Lettin' me go on like that."

"It was nice not to think about it for a minute," he said into her shoulder.
