Ben took a seat behind the counter and started looking over old issues of the Daily Bugle from his two-year absence. There wasn't anything too alarming. The Avengers and Fantastic Four were alive again, too, which was more surprising than it should have been. The Green Goblin was in jail, which was actually very surprising. Ben felt very smug about that.

After a bit he stopped looking at the computer and tried to just look like a very professional business owner. He wasn't sure that he was pulling it off, so he just made sure the Help Wanted sign was still nice and visible.

[OOC: Still looking for employees for during the week. C'mon, you know you wanna sell old crap!]

Claire was pretty sure she had aced her SATs the day before, or at least enough to get into art school; to celebrate, she was treating herself to a nice round of thrift shopping.

With a small, pink piglet following her on a leash. She gave the man behind the counter a smile before she got distracted by her roommate-turned-pet. "Penelope, you can't try on hats like that. Or eat them."

"She eats it, you buy it," Ben called out from his seat. "I just made the rule up, but I think it's a pretty good one."

"She's usually a person," Claire explained, off-hand as if it was completely normal information. "I think she likes the daisies. But yeah, safe rule to have."

"So what happened?" Ben asked with genuine interest. He'd heard that Thor was a frog once. If it could happen to the Norse god of thunder, why couldn't a girl be a pig? "She wanted to see what life was like if she were a lot shorter?"

"I don't know," Claire admitted. "I came home, and, bam, my roommate was a pig. People keep telling me they turn back on their own."

Runnign a hand through her hair, she added, "I'm Claire, by the way. This is Penelope. Is this your place?"

[OOC: RL calls, SP is win?]

"Yep. Unless you don't like it, in which case I'm going to lie to protect my feelings," Ben said. "I'm Ben. Nice to meet you."

[OOC: Sure!]

"Are you kidding? I love it," Claire said. "All the old stuff. It's just cool."

Penelope squealed in apparent agreement, and Claire's gaze drifted to the now hiring sign. "Are you still looking for people?"

"Yep," Ben said, glancing at Penelope. Fandom really was weird if people were so blase about people turning into pigs. "I'm guessing that you're interested?"

"I so am. I've been kind of desperately needing a job," Claire informed him. "I only have classes Tuesday and Wednesday. Do you have an application or something?"

"Um, that would probably be a good thing to have." Ben asked. "It's my first time owning a business, can you tell? Just let me know what day you'd like to work and promise not to steal anything and we'll see how it works out."

Claire thought it over, grinning. It turned out getting a job was crazy easy. "Thursday," she said. "And I don't steal. Um, my family owns a business, so I'm used to being kind of polite to people, too." When she absolutely had to be.

She tilted her head to the side. "If you get a cool vintage dress in my size, can I put it to the side?"

"Sure. Consider it a perk of the job," Ben said. It's not like he could complain. He'd built an entire wardrobe for himself out of this stuff.

This kept getting better. "What hours should I be here?" Claire asked, after turning to scoop up Penelope. She was going after the hat with the daisies again.

"Let's say from ten to four," Ben said. "And if your friend there still wants the hat when she's human again, you can keep that on the side for her, too."

"I can do that," Claire said with a nod and a reach for her wallet. "And I'll buy the hat. I think Pen slobbered on a corner anyhow."

"Good, because I probably would have noticed that and taken it out of your first paycheck anyway," Ben said. "This way is just easier for both of us."

Claire gave a comically exaggerated sigh. "Just because my roommate ruined it ..." she said, shaking her head. "Any other rules, Mr. Boss-man? Other than not stealing."

"Don't let anyone else steal, either. Pretty much do your best to not allow anything that's illegal to happen here unless you have a very good reason for it. Smile for customers, even if you need to be sarcastic to do it," Ben said. "And if you need anything during your shift, give me a call. I don't live far from here. Annnnd that's about all I've got. We'll see if I have to come up with more later on."

Claire flashed a smile that wasn't sarcastic at all. "Perfect," she told Ben. "And hopefully I won't have the pig along when I come in Thursday."

She fished out some crumpled bills to pay for the hat.

"If you do, just keep her behind the counter. Or on the counter. A temporary pig might bring people in, who knows?" Ben said.

Claire considered the pig; the pig considered her right back, then looked pleadingly at Ben. "I could dress her up and make a diorama for the windows," Claire ventured. "Come in for Pig-tacular savings."

"If she's still a pig and you don't think she'll kill you for it later, it sounds like a plan to me," Ben said.

Claire had been halfway kidding, but ...

"I'll sketch something out and put it together when I get in Thursday."

"Just don't die," Ben said. "I'd hate to lose an employee this quickly. It wouldn't look good to potential replacements."

That was kind of a weird thing to say, Claire thought.

"I didn't know working in a thrift store had a big risk of death to it."

"It does if your friend there wants revenge," Ben pointed out.

"Oh! No, no, Penelope is the sweetest girl ever, totally," Claire said, indignant. "I'll tell her she was cute doing it and she'll be happy."

Which made Claire feel a little guilty, actually.

"As long as she's happy with it," Ben said. "Okay, then. Thursday it is. Try to have fun and if you burn the place down, I'll be extremely disappointed in you."

"Girl scout's honor," Claire promised. "I'll be in Thursday."

Just be warned: I might be dressed like a ninja, which might make me hard to find.
