Strokes of Genius, Thursday

Was her little potted plant okay? The answer to that question, as soon as Katchoo got into the store and hurried over to check on it with a manic curiosity that almost bordered on the pathetic (although she'd cheerfully hurt you for saying so), was yes.

with the plant's well-being settled, Katchoo took a slow tour of the aisles, checking inventory, then set up camp behind the register to play around with watercolors on wet paper. The result was mostly abstract, in overall dark colors to a vaguely disturbing effect.

[OOC: OCD-free and good to goooooooooooo. Which is not to imply that the lack of OCD is in any way meant to be beneficial to slime. Nor does it bear malevolent intentions toward such.]

Sarah hadn't been into Strokes of Genius yet, in part because she wasn't much of an artist. But the walls of her store were looking very grey and blah to her, and she had an idea on fixing it.

If she could find a local artist, that is.

Which is what brought her to the register, watching the blond girl paint for a moment before she spoke. The girl was good.

"Hi," she said, flashing a smile. "I have a little bit of an odd question, but I'm wondering if you can give me a hand."

Katchoo tensed briefly, almost imperceptibly if you didn't know how to look for it, before she looked up from her work.

"Long as it's not literally, or too weird, maybe I can," she allowed in her usual rasp.

Sarah always registered flinching, but that particular tension didn't strike her as anything important. She had been almost staring; a lot of people didn't like that.

"I manage the comics store a few blocks over," she said. "I'm cleaning it up and, well, the walls look sort of blah. Do you think I could stencil on a few comics characters, or would that make it look too much like a little boy's bedroom?"

"Depends on the comic characters," Katchoo said in a tone that hinted that it better not be anything Disneyish. "And the colors, probably, but you could probably pull it off."

Sarah ran a hand through her hair. "Nothing too gimmicky or cutesy. Nothing I'd be sick of in a week," she said. "Bitterwoman, Ratman, a couple of the biggies. I almost want to do a female superheroes theme but that might mean looking at fake cartoon breasts all day."

"Ugh," Katchoo said with feeling. "That much frikkin' male-fantasy version of femininity and you'd want to rip your eyes out in a day, tops. Unless you tone it down a little, make 'em look like their anatomy's actually in all the right places."

"Oh, I'd definitely tone it down. I don't mind athletic," Sarah said, gesturing down at herself. "I work out a lot, I have a nice body. It happens. But I swear, some of the superheroines wouldn't last ten seconds in a fight. Too top-heavy."

Katchoo snorted, amused but cautiously approving. Also maybe checking out the veracity of Sarah's claims. "How the hell they manage to get out of bed and not fall over, I have no idea. Unless that's a superpower nobody talks about?"

"It comes with the uniform," Sarah decided. "It has to."

"That's some damn good spandex," Katchoo remarked. "Anyway, you planning on doing the work yourself? Oughta have all the stuff you need here."

"Actually I was also wondering if I could get someone to do it on commission," Sarah said. "Do you know anyone in town who would do that kind of work, maybe a student? I can pay, but not a fortune."

"I could do it," Katchoo offered offhandedly, "or there's always asking the art teacher up at the school to spread the word maybe."

"Or you could do it." Sarah liked that idea. "I'll tell you what, sketch something up and bring it by the shop sometime next week for me to look at? I can be there any day that's good for you, but I usually open Wednesday or Thursday."

Katchoo nodded, memories of that weird Winter Chronicles comic she'd worked on while living on the streets in L.A. drifting vaguely across the back of her mind. "I work those days, but I can probably come by on a break or something." It would probably save her half a pack of cigarettes.

"I won't keep you too long," Sarah promised. "And thank you."

"Yeah, sure." Katchoo had to take a moment to boggle at herself for agreeing so readily. "It'll be fun, right? And not too top-heavy."
