Strokes of Genius, Friday

Viki twirled around as she finished sweeping the floor. Grinning a bit at how clean it was, she cheerfully put broom and dustpan away before settling herself in her usual place on the desk, plucking a sketchbook from one of the shelves as she passed.

Pencil crayons, she mused as she doodled in the book, were not as fun on paper as crayons, but they did have prettier lines.

Hurrah for Friday OMG.

Charlotte had had a bit of an idea for a potential event to promote the gallery a little, and she, remembering it was there, took a little trip over to Strokes of Genius to pick up some paints, brushes, and little canvases.

"Ooh," she couldn't help complimenting to the girl at the counter, "that looks nice!"

That got a smile as she straightened up to look more professional and, well, on the job.

"Thank you," Viki said beaming, and then contemplating her sketchbook. "I have been practicing as it seemed somewhat odd to work in a store for art and not know any of it myself, don't you think?"

"It definitely gives you a better idea of what the products are like," Charlotte offered with a smile. "I mean, I work in a gallery and have been selling art for years, but I can't make it at all."

"The gallery here?" she asked brightly. "I do like it, though I don't go as often as I might. I tend to get distracted, I'm afraid, and wind up doing other things."

A beat.

"And I am Viki, if you'd like to know, and did you need any help at all today?"

"I'm Charlotte," she offered back. "And I'm glad to know you at least enjoy it, even if you're not there so often. I think I'm all set, just picking up a few supplies. It's so nice to have this store here."

"It is nice to meet you," she bobbed her head. "And the store is quite fun, really, and useful, because you never know when you might need a lot of paintbrushes or stencils or other such things."

"And," Viki tried to explain, "I do try. But then I will wind up on the beach, or perhaps the park, and then there's just no arguing with it if that's where I wind up, you see?"

Charlotte wasn't sure if she did see. Her head tilted slightly. The girl must be extremely easy to distract. "But it is a rather small island; it doesn't take much to get from one spot to the other."

"It might help," she considered, "if I brought a map. But mostly I teleport and there's just no use arguing if teleporting three times gets you no where near the place you'd like to go."

Charlotte's eyes widened, as the poor woman never seemed to get used to anything around here.

"Teleport?"

"Instantaneous movement from one location to another," Viki said helpfully. "I specialize in it, and I'm not bad."

This was an understatement, though Viki was honestly unaware of just how badly it understated things.

"Oh." Charlotte blinked.

"I just...didn't realize that people actually could...do that...."

"Not all that many can," she said, considering that. "But yes, some. If you ever need a good lot moved very quickly I can help you, if you'd like."

"Oh, well, all that certainly does sound convenient," Charlotte mused, but her eyebrows were frowning with the clear distinction that she wasn't about to jump in line to give it a try. What if only part of you teleported? Oh, that'd be awful.

"A lot of armies like it," she noted. "So it's never hard to find work if things are going bad."

"You can teleport whole armies?"

"I never tried everything," she mused, turning a pencil crayon over in her hand, "but I have moved all soldiers on the field before, and that was quite a few."

"Sounds rather...tiring."

"Not really," she said, with a tilt of her head. "Sometimes I get hungry, but I get hungry when I'm not transporting people around too, so I don't think that counts properly."

"You...must be pretty good at it, then," Charlotte guessed, because, somehow, she figured that made enough sense to run with. She didn't think on it too hard, though, because then she worried it might start not making sense and she'd just confuse herself.

"I think so," she admitted. "I have never met someone as good as me, but they could be out there and simply not interested in meeting an amateur as it is."

"Well," Charlotte offered, "you're definitely more of an expert than I am, and you don't even have to worry about me, because I think I like just regular old walking for transportation."

She grinned a bit.

"Which is, I predict, a lot easier to determine where you are going sometimes."

"Is that what you meant?" Charlotte asked, finally starting to piece it together. "When you said you try to get to the gallery, but end up on the beach or something? You teleport into the wrong areas?"

"I wouldn't say they're the wrong places," she said, thinking over that, "though that sounds about right. It's just that I will vaguely think I should go to the gallery, and then wind up at the park and that must mean that more of me, however vague, wanted the park instead."

"So it just takes you to which place you really want to be in more?"

"When I'm not really trying to go anywhere," she corrected, smiling. "I mess up much less if I really want to go somewhere."

Charlotte nodded. "Well, that makes sense."

About as much sense as a girl who teleported could make, anyway.

"Eventually," she offered, setting her sketchbook to the side, "I find that everything does. Shall I ring you through then?"

"Yes, please," Charlotte gave her a smile. "I'm all set."

Viki smiled back as she very professionally, for all her vagueness, rang the items through. "It will be ~~handwavy~~," she said, upon bagging it all neatly. "And I am glad you found what you needed here."

"Well, I'd be worried," Charlotte said, chuckling a little as she took her credit card out of her purse, "if there weren't art supplies here when it's an art supply store."

"Well," Viki offered with a grin, "they could always turn into something else for the day and then it would be a real case."

"Especially around here," Charlotte muttered, shaking her head slightly, because that would be just the thing to happen one day, wouldn't it? All the businesses getting all switched around for a day.

"It might be interesting," she mused, wondering if Charlotte was merely going to keep holding onto the card, "if it were only for the day."

Charlotte ~~figured the handing over was implied~~ handed the card over. "Yes, only for a day. I don't think I'd want to deal with it if it were any longer."

Viki grinned a bit ~~and the mun didn't want to assume!~~ as she swiped the card, before handing it back with a pen and the printout. "If you could please sign," she said. "It would be very much of a hassle, I would think, for longer."

~~Pppttthh.~~

"Especially," Charlotte noted as she carefully put down her rather nice and perfect signature, "since then you wouldn't know when it would end, and it could just get messy to conduct business."

"And trying to figure out who owned what," she added.

"Oh, that's a good point," Charlotte agreed, handing the paper over. "Because what used to be yours might be where someone else's things would normally be, and then what?"

She took it with a smile. "Thank you," Viki said, finishing up the transaction, and handing Charlotte her copy. "And that's just right, everyone would have to do so much running around to try and figure it all out. I do hope it doesn't happen."

"You and me both," Charlotte agreed with a smile, reaching for her purchases. "You have a nice day, Viki. It was nice meeting you!"

She offered the bags, with another smile. "And you as well! Have a nice day!"
