The York Gallery; Sunday. [ 11/16 ]

Charlotte had been in such a good mood all weekend that she might have gone a little overboard on celebratory baking, which was why there seemed to be a copious amounts of cupcakes and cookies available along with the usual Sunday tea offered along with the current exhibit.

Which was why Charlotte hoped people came by today, but otherwise, she'd eat far too many of them, and they'd just go right to her thighs, and she did not need any more padding there.

Eat the damn cupcakes! Please?

Simon had realised that despite the fact that the island was small, there were still plenty of places he hadn't visited. And as he hadn't been to an art gallery in ages, he stopped by.

The cupcakes caught his attention first though.

Not recognizing the young man, Charlotte was exceptionally pleased to see him come in and greeted him similarly. "Hello!" she said. "Welcome to the gallery. Help yourself to any of the cupcakes if you wish." Since she'd noticed him noticing them, there was a certain tone of no small nudging toward the offered treats; if he didn't eat them, she would, and that would not be good.

"Thank you," Simon replied, requiring no further encouragement. "They look delicious." He picked one and held it in his hand, hesitating a little as he had a feeling conversation would be appropriate. "I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the art of this time and place."

Charlotte smiled at the compliment to her baking prowess, but, not wanting to make it evident that she was fishing for such nice words, didn't mention anything about having made them herself. "Well," she said, "art is quite often heavily entrenched in its past as well as its present circumstances. I find a lot of the themes in the current exhibit to rely heavily on classical themes, but I'm not about to assume on exactly which time and place you'll be viewing it from, but it's safe to think that it's not this one?"

Simon took a bite from the cupcake, and had to wait until he replied. "No, uh, I'm from a different solar system, in the future. Are they homemade?" He held up the cake.

"Whipped up just this weekend," Charlotte was not reluctant to release the information with a bit of a humble smile. "I hit a bit of a phase this weekend, and went kind of overboard with the baking. How are they? Have as many as you like; there's still tons more upstairs in the apartment, too."

"Oh, my sister used to get those phases too," he said, with a smile. "But her creations might have been a little more inventive." He took another bite, forgetting to mention that inventive in this case didn't equal good. These cupcakes tasted a lot better.

"Well, they are a bit traditional," Charlotte admitted, "but they're from my grandmother's recipe, so they're tried and true."

"I'm Charlotte, by the way," she added, almost an afterthought, with a smile. "Charlotte York; I don't think we've met before?"

She would have liked to think she'd remember meeting him, because he was a cutie, but she could have also chalked it up to Completely Contented and Domesticated Relationship Blinders. Which she didn't mind having one bit; he was way too young, anyway.

"Oh, they taste great," Simon added hastily. "And I'm Simon Tam. No, I don't think we have. I haven't been here long, and I haven't been socializing a lot."

"Well, then," Charlotte nodded with a smile, "welcome to the neighborhood! On the wider scale of things, I haven't been here too long, but long enough that it feels enough like home."

He smiled a little. "Fandom seems to be a place which a lot of different people are able to call home."

"Well, it's not New York!" Charlotte admitted with a little bit of a laugh. "But it does have it's charms, as well as it's....well...I don't know exactly how long you've been here, Simon, but it has its...uhh...quirks," that was a nice way to put it, "too."

"My sister used to go to school here," he said. "She told me stories, but I'm not sure I understood it all. So far nothing too worrying has happened to me." He smiled at Charlotte.

"Well," Charlotte said, taking in a little bit of a breath, "the first thing to happen to me was turning into a pony. And on my grand opening, a lot of the girls were actually turned into boys. I was spared, that time, but then it happened again, and, unfortunately, no luck that time, but it was thankfully only a day."

"Yes, I heard something similar," Simon replied, frowning a little. "It must have been confusing." He would have been quite confused if he had woken up as a woman.

"Oh, my goodness," Charlotte, wide-eyed, shook her head as though to convey that Simon could have no idea. "If it weren't for the fact that Dale was there when the pony thing happened, I'll tell you, I'd have bolted out of this place the second I was bipedal with opposable thumbs again!"

"Quite understandable. Dale is a friend?" He took another bite of the cupcake. "My sister told me she had been an owl for a week. I got vivid descriptions of killing and eating small voles."

Dale came down the steps holding a pan with a dozen cupcakes. "Charlotte? Would you mind if I brought these down here?" he asked. "I'd like to make some room in the kitchen to do some planning for my meeting tomorrow."

Charlotte winced a little at the thought of even more cupcakes down in the gallery, but she couldn't deny the fact that the massive crowding of them was probably much worse upstairs.

"Of course I don't mind," she said. "Why can't you use the office, though? Unless you plan on having the meeting in the kitchen?"

She hoped not, then she'd have to really get to cleaning, despite the fact that, if one excluded the cupcakes everywhere, it was spotless.

"The meetings at town hall but I wanted to go over some of the contingency plans I've put together and perhaps put them into a presentation format for the Mayor and the Kitchen has more space to spread things out," Dale explained. "Is that all right? Or I could just eat the cupcakes."

"Eat the cupcakes!" Charlotte said, with perhaps a bit too much enthusiasm, determination, and even force. "Please!"

Then she colored a little over the outburst and, much more demurely, added, "They were made to be eaten, after all. I just...kind of got carried away."

Dale tried to hide his amusement and failed. "Normally you would be chastising me for eating too much junk food," he teased. "But since you made too much..."

"They're all to celebrate your promotion, anyway!" Charlotte added. "And all that junk food hasn't harmed you too much so far, anyway, a couple dozen cupcakes aren't going to do a thing, either."

Charlotte loved Dale, but she hated his stupid metabolism out of pure jealousy.

"Probably not," Dale agreed with a chuckle. "Though I'll probably take some to the station tomorrow as well as to the mayor's office if you can get rid of them today."

"Oh, please do!" Charlotte said. "I can only get rid of so many here, and Ralph claims to like them, so I know he won't mind. You aren't worried that it might be taken as a bribe if you bring them into the town hall, do you?"

"Somehow I get the impression that the mayor is not one to be bribed with baked goods," Dale chuckled. "At least the few times that I've met him."

"All the more reason," Charlotte said with a succinct nod, "to worry about him thinking you are. But you'd never bribe anyway, and there's so damn many of them, that I think it's probably a good idea to take some."

"Not a problem," Dale said trying to comfort Charlotte. "I'll make sure to give them to the office people at the mayor's office. Make sure we have a good spirit of cooperation between our two branches."

"And third party contribution from the art community on the island!" Charlotte chirped in, because, really, she made them, she should get some billing.

Dale snapped his fingers and pointed at Charlotte. "Excellent point! I'll make sure to work in the cultural aspects of the cupcake contribution."

Charlotte couldn't help laughing. "Good. Just so long as no one's left out."

Dale couldn't help but laugh along with her. "I'll make sure to paint a global community view of the cupcakes," he said leaning over to give her a work-appropriate kiss on the cheek. "However I'll leave you now to your customers and get to the two dozen cupcakes I need to eat upstairs."

Hmm, two dozen was barely going to put a dent in it. "Feel free," Charlotte said, "to move whatever you need to either down here or into the living room temporarily."

"Thank you," Dale said flashing her a grin. "I think by tomorrow we can have a good portion of them taken care of."

"If not," Charlotte said, "we'll hold them until Wednesday, and then I'll shove them on Teddy. Either he can take them to the fraternity meeting, or, I swear to you, he and his boyfriend could probably get through every last one of them on top of all the food he usually brings Teddy for dinner."

I'm wont to be a little slow, still recovering a bit from the plaaaaaague that struck me yesterday.
