Ben was preparing himself. Every time somebody came into the store, they got a job or tried to hire him for a job or something. Even though he hadn't seen much of the weirdness of the island that he'd heard so much about, he was still learning that he had to be ready for anything but people shopping.

With that in mind, he sat behind the counter, playing with that camera a bit more. If he was going to be using it in a semi-professional capacity, he had to make sure it was ready to go.

[OOC: The help wanted sign is still up. I'll be afk later this afternoon into the evening.]

Claire wandered by in mid-afternoon. "Hey, Ben?" she greeted, walking behind the counter. "Is there a green notebook back here? I can't find it and I know I had it at work."

"Hey, Claire," Ben said. He put the camera down on the counter and moved back so she had more room to look for the notebook. "I didn't see one, but I also wasn't paying much attention."

Claire sighed and crouched near his feet to rummage around. "Found it!" she said triumphantly, emerging with notebook held aloft. "Nice camera. New merchandise?"

"Thanks," Ben said. "No, it's technically old merchandise, but I keep taking it out and messing with it. It's old, but it still works really well."

"I love old cameras," Claire said affectionately. "Digital always feels sort of flat and artificial. With film, you get the love, you know?"

[OOC: And I crash! Yay SP!]

"I know," Ben said. "I've done a lot of good work in a darkroom, too. Digital takes that fun away, too."

"Oh, cool, I had no idea you were a photographer," Claire said. "I'm ... kind of trying to be one? And so far I love the darkroom."

"It was a long time ago for me," Ben said. And technically it wasn't him. Whatever. "Although some kids did talk to me about shooting a calendar for them, so I might be getting back into it. Who knows? Anyway, what got you interested in photography?"

"I dunno," Claire said, almost sounding puzzled by it herself. "I always liked art class in school, right, and lately my camera just feels right. My brother's girlfriend's brother is an awesome photographer" -- and hot -- "but that wasn't The Reason or anything. What got you to quit?"

"I went on a kind of cross-country road trip for a few years to find myself," Ben said. "I ended up in a completely different place at the end of it." Metaphorically. The trip physically began and ended in New York.

"That sounds really incredible," Claire decided, eyes big. "You just got away from everything, huh?"

"At the time, I felt like I didn't really have a choice. It was a really weird point in my life," Ben admitted.

"Whoa...." Claire contributed, trying to sound like she knew what Ben meant.

It took her a moment to get back to his previous point, but: "So what did you say about a calendar?"

"I guess there's a fraternity on campus?" Ben said. "They're doing a calendar for charity." Ben was being kind and not mentioning the space station thing. "I want to say it'll be fun, but I'm still not completely sure about that. Want to come along whenever the shoot happens? You'll get to see how a former semi-professional photographer does his job."

Claire flashed an enormous smile. "If I wouldn't be in the way, I would really, really like that."

"You wouldn't be in the way at all," Ben promised. "And it's not like I'm going to actually know what I'm doing, shooting a calendar, so it could be funny for a whole bunch of reasons."

"I'll help with props and load your camera and whatever you need," Claire promised. She didn't bounce, ever, but this was as close as she would come. "And would you maybe let me take a few shots for my portfolio for college?"

"Yeah, sure," Ben said. "I'm not sure how portfolio-worthy it'll be, but it's a place to start."

"That's more than I have in my portfolio now," Claire said. "Now it's kind of nonexistent. Thanks, Ben."

"You're welcome. I'm just glad I can help out," Ben said.
