Cold weather meant two things. One, Hoshi was wearing a pair of fingerless gloves to keep her hands warm at the front desk. Two, it was time for some spicy comfort food.

Jack popped in for some food. Hmm....Spicy food, eh? Excellent!

As usual, Porthos started growling at Jack, but today Hoshi was a little bit faster. "You should give me some warning first before you come in," she said as she scooped up Porthos.

"I'm sorry!" he shouted said loudly. "So... I should call ahead from now on?"

Dogs loved him. Really. Except Porthos.

"That would be good. Just a couple minute's warning and I can lock Porthos up in Miss Connell's office before you come in," said Hoshi, struggling to hang onto the growling puppy.

"Okay. I can wait." He could wait. Waiting was better than dealing with a Porthos situation.

"Gunther can take your order while I stash Porthos," said Hoshi, waving over at the chef who was snickering in the corner.

Jack ordered the spicy rice while everything was being dePorthos'd. He was not happy about Gunther snickering at him.

Hoshi returned, still frowning. "You do know that the special today is really spicy, right?"

"I can take it," he said, manfully. He ate spicy things all the time.

Then he thought about it. "How spicy is it?"

"Really, really spicy," said Hoshi. "You do know what goes into kimchi, right?"

"No idea," he said, almost proudly. "Habaneros?"

"Not exactly," said Hoshi. "There's plenty of garlic, though."

"Garlic's fine," he said. "I just won't be kissing anyone after," he said with a grin like he had plenty of people he could be kissing after.

"And then there's the fermented fish sauce," added Hoshi, grabbing a stack of napkins. Jack made need that once he realized what he's been eating.

"Fermented? Is that like fish booze?" Napkins were a wise precaution. Hoshi may also want to stand clear from that first bite.

"Well, sort of, in that it's 'booze' made out of fish guts," said Hoshi, taking a step back.

"Well, that's a hell of a way to make booze," he said.

Hoshi blinked rapidly a few times, then just handed the extra napkins to Jack. "Hope you enjoy your lunch," she said.

"THanks!" he said, trying his first bite.

THat was.... special. Ooh. Wow. "Water?" he choked out.

"Hmmm, I don't think there's any out here," said Hoshi. "I'll have to run to the kitchen to get some. Be right back."

"Thanks!" he said.

And took another bite.
