The Arms Hotel Lobby, Friday

There were fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies at the front desk today. Unfortunately, Mary hadn't been able to find potholders when she took the cookies out of the oven. That's why she was wearing several layers of mittens.

If anyone asked, she would claim that it was a new fashion trend.

The Arms Hotel was open.

Another day, another load of restoration work. Ooh, cookies!

Simon had actually planned to talk to Mary, and the smell of cookies certainly encouraged that idea. "Hello," he said, stopping at the desk.

"Hey Simon," said Mary. "Any news on River yet?

A hint of worry appeared in his eyes as he shook his head. "No, unfortunately not. And it looks like I'm going to have to stay here for a while in order to find a way to reach her."

Mary pushed the plate of cookies towards Simon. "Well, remember what I said. You're welcome to stay as long as you need to and I'd be happy to help in any way," she said.

He picked up a cookie. "Thank you. I actually thought that I shouldn't impose on your hospitality and I looked at an apartment. The landlord was... quite rude though. I'd much rather stay here."

He took a bite out of the cookie. "River loved making cookies. I think I like the taste of these better though."

"It's my own special recipe," said Mary, beaming. "And feel free to impose! River was one of my favorite employees and I'm happy to have you here."

"Thank you. I know River liked working here." He smiled a little. "I hope the hotel gets busier than the clinic does."

"It can be slow for a long time, and then all of a sudden it will get very busy," said Mary. "I imagine it's the same way with the clinic. I've certainly spent my share of time there."

"You have? Nothing serious, I hope?" He looked a little concerned.

"Hmmm. Let's see, there was the concussion and a nasty scratch on my leg last year, and then I had strep throat earlier this year," said Mary. "Nothing too severe, though I still have a tiny scar on my leg."

"I hope you will avoid accidents in the future," Simon said. "But let me know if there is a problem."

"I will," said Mary. "It's nice to know that there's a doctor around for emergencies, not that I plan on having any."

"Emergencies are rarely planned," Simon observed, taking another bite of the cookie.
