The boardwalk - Friday evening - 11/28

Liir was rather pleased with the evening so far, as he had Amber on one arm and a bag of various hot food in the other that smelled rather enticing.

"They smell good, those french fries," she commented, leaning close.

He pulled it away with a laugh.

"When we find a place to sit," he said.

"I know how to eat and walk at the same time," she teased, tugging on his arm towards the nearest bench. "I'm so starving." But only because she's not yet eaten today.

He pointed.

"And so you shall eat as soon as we get to the bench there," he said as he started towards it.

"Did you eat earlier or is this your first food for the day?"

"Are you hungry?" she asked, casting him a sideways glance.

Amber shook her head at his question. "This is the first."

"It smells very good," he said in answer. He was never much hungry, hadn't been for some years really. His interest in food was more a matter of stimulation and curiosity.

"And you should eat breakfast. It's good for you."

He nudged her gently.

"Or shall I have to bring you food to make sure you do?"

Amber agreed and was glad they were almost upon that bench.

"I hardly ever think about breakfast," she answered, peeking up at him through her lashes. "I didn't make it back until noon and knew I was eating with you tonight so I just saved myself for whatever we we're going to eat."

A beat.

"But I wouldn't mind you bringing me breakfast."

"How was your holiday, incidentally?" he asked with a grin as he sat down.

She settled down beside him, laying her jacket and flowers down at her side. "Um. It was alright. The highlight was having Loretta make a pass at Murdock. Me and ma knew what they were doing in that back bedroom. We just cackled, drank beer, and watched TV. I haven't talked to him yet since he's still with his family. But... wow. You know?"

Liir nodded, though he didn't really know. He could have gone to see Fiyero, but he'd chosen to stay at home. He still couldn't talk to Fiyero after the burn of missing the white cat.

Instead, he started to pull out the food, holding out Amber's for her.

"Thank you," she said, accepting it. "What did you do yesterday?"

Peeling back the paper on her cheeseburger, she took a decent bite and looked up at him, grinning.

He smiled and took a bite of his hamburger and did his level best to pretend he'd missed the question in the midst of the bite.

"You know, I haven't had one of these for some time. I forget how good they can be."

"I know, right? I love them," she answered, keeping her eyes fixated on his face.

"What did you do yesterday?" Yeah, she didn't miss the evasiveness.

He had a gamble here; try to evade the question again, which might not work and would end up making the rest of the time awkward, or answer it and get more questions.

"Nothing much," he said, honestly. "It's not a holiday for me, really, so I simply enjoyed the day."

"Yah? But what did you do to enjoy it?" she asked before taking another bite of her cheeseburger.

"Started on some work, figured out a small bit of magic, and thought for a while. Not in a bad way. I just like to digest every once in a while."

"Mhm," she murmured. "Digesting is good. I think sometimes too," she said, smiling. "Care to share anything with me?"

He looked down at the food before opening his mouth and closing it. Then he nodded.

"If you'd like. It's nothing particularly pleasant, unfortunately."

"Oh," she said, frowning slightly. "Tell me?"

"I went back to Oz a few weeks ago," he said quietly. "And discovered what had happened to my father, in the Emerald City."

He swallowed.

"And was seen by the very traitor who sent him to his death."

Amber sucked in a short breathe of air. "Oh, Liir." Cheeseburger forgotten, she scooted closer and rested her hand on his forearm. "I'm sorry for asking. I didn't mean to make you talk about something so uncomfortable..."

He shook his head quickly and gave her a smile.

"It's not your fault I'm in the midst of something so weighty. And... I'll have to do something about the Cat sometime soon, but it does mean I won't be going back to Oz, or to see Trism, for a time."

Not till he could cure the Elephant Princess. Not until he'd have people on his side.

"I'm here for you though, in any capacity. And the cat? What do you mean?"

"The traitor," he said, looking at her, fingers flexing in phantom rage, "Was a Cat who pretended to be a cat, Elphaba's cat. He or she, to be fair, is the one who was working for the Wizard."

Oh my. Not that she understood that entirely, but she understood his anger and seeing him angry made her hurt for him. "Can't something be done to this... cat?"
