The York Gallery; Sunday [ 11/30 ]

Charlotte was expecting the usual quiet Sunday, so she was relaxing with some tea behind the counter, flipping through magazines with a big black marker, circling certain things that she particularly liked. These magazines would later be left in strategically 'random' spots around the apartment, where Dale might find them and get a hint or two for Christmas presents.

Although, really, she should be doing some searching for the next exhibit after the Willey one.

Claire was back from L.A. and didn't have much to do, so she decided to finally head to the gallery and take in the exhibit.

"Hey," she greeted Charlotte, with a little wave. "Is the photography exhibit still open?"

It looked like it was still there, but it seemed weird to walk in and not say anything at all.

"Oh, yeah, of course!" Charlotte gave Claire a smile with her nod. "Go right on ahead. We're just so quiet on Sundays."

And...most days, really, but Charlotte didn't mind too terribly. It was so much less stressful than New York, that was for sure.

"Did you have a good holiday, Claire?"

"It was nice," Claire said. "I went home to L.A." She knew Charlotte probably didn't actually care, but she still felt compelled to add, "I met my aunt. And my big brother got engaged. How was yours?"

"Awwww!" An engagement would always be news to make Charlotte absolutely gush. "Congratulations to your brother! That's much more exciting than my Thanksgiving, but it was nice. I just stayed here, spent some time with Dale. Christmas should be more exciting."

"Thanks," Claire said. "On Nate's behalf, I mean. It's kind of cool, she's -- did you ever hear of the book Charlotte, Light and Dark? I mean, with your name tons of people must have given it to you."

Brenda didn't like the reference, but that didn't mean Claire wouldn't use it. It wasn't like Brenda would know.

"What do you have for Christmas?"

Charlotte's head tilted. "No," she admitted, "I don't think I have. Would you recommend it?"

And then she dismissively waved her hand. "Oh, you know. Big family thing. It'll be nice, though; I haven't seen some of them for a while. And that's the only condition in which those things end up enjoyable."

"I love it so much," Claire said. "It's about this girl who's a total genius, right, and she's like six, and she starts just fucking with the scientists who are trying to make her their lab rat, like she's experimenting on them right back. Anyhow, Nate's girlfriend is Charlotte. Was Charlotte."

Charlotte's eyes widened slightly. "That really happened to her?"

"Yeah," Claire said, taking the wide eyes as a sign she should reassure Charlotte. "I mean, she's normal and everything now. She kind of doesn't like to talk about when she was little, but the book's totally true."

"I'm not really sure," Charlotte admitted, "that book would really fit to my tastes."

Although she did have to admit a pretty sufficient amount of curiosity. That poor girl! And, look, she grew up okay and was getting married and...

Charlotte abruptly changed her mind. "Actually, maybe I really would have to look into it."

"It's more something you read when you're like 14 and all angsty," Claire explained. "But it's good. The bookstore probably has it."

She was not lending out her copy.

Maybe something for fourteen and angst-filled will help make Charlotte feel a little younger...or make her feel irreparably old. She figured it was worth a shot, since almost anything made her feel old, anyway.

"I'll definitely give it a look."

"Awesome, let me know what you think," Claire said, bouncing toward the exhibit.
