Millie buzzed around the store quite cheerfully, straightening and looking to see what she might need to order more of. She might even be caught singing some of her old temple songs, which were not exactly - or even close to being - Christmas carols.

"Oh, nearly two years now," Millie said cheerfully.

"Ah so you already know about Christmas and Channukah."

She shrugged. "Enough, I suppose."

"Got any fun holidays where you're from?"

"Not really," she said looking down. "Only the one where they'd take me out of the city for one day a year and parade me around to all the villages and people would jump up and try and touch me for luck. It would take days to recover and I'd be exhausted and bruised."

"Jesus." Tully said sympathetically. "Glad you got out of there."

"Oh, I had to," Millie said matter-of-factly. "They planned to kill me."

Tully stared at her, appalled. "Why?"

"When a Living Asheth gets old enough they kill her and replace her with a new one," Millie said, again very matter-of-factly. "I escaped before that happened."

"I hope you won't be offended, but I don't think I think much of that religion."

She shrugged. "It's the way things are there."

"Then I'm glad you're here instead." he said, smiling.

"Oh, so am I," she said lightly. "That's why I ran away to another world where they couldn't find me."

Tully nodded, and looked around the store for a bit. Lots of interesting books. Shakespear plays translated into alien languages, and even Elvish. He thought this would be a great place to find something for Ixnay for Christmas.

"So what do you do for fun?"

"I read," she said promptly.

"Convenient to run a bookstore." he chuckled.

"Well, choosing to run one wasn't a coincidence," she said with smile.

"Good choice. How did it feel, to choose for yourself what to do?"

She looked at him curiously. "I'd been choosing what to do for a long time before I got here."

"Right I meant, the first time you did that. It was a long time in my life that I really felt like I'd made a choice that was really my own."

"I was very happy to escape and not be dead," she said honestly.

"Huh, me too." Actually he hadn't been too worried about death. Incarceration for shit he hadn't done, on the other hand...
