Coyote had slept straight through Monday. As such, he'd be rather surprised to discover it was Tuesday.

A happy surprised, though. After all, it meant one less day of actually working.

Coyote doesn't know about those crazy Euro- and African-based winter holidays. But he's still got some nice looking red and green moccasins for sale. . . .

He might eventually realize it's Tuesday. But I wouldn't guarantee it.

Firekeeper had no idea what the store's sign read, due to... well, due to not being able to read it. Still, she'd noticed some weeks ago when the building had gone from an empty place to a not-empty place, and her curiosity finally got the best of her.

So here she was, Blind Seer at her side, stepping inside the store to have a look around.

Coyote perked right on up at the sight of potential customers. And yes, the wolf was totally a potential customer. Coyote didn't discriminate.

"Welcome to my store!"

Blind Seer's ears twitched at the greeting, and he gave Coyote a cautious sniff.

He may be shaped like one, but he doesn't smell like a human, he informed Firekeeper.

"Hello," she said to Coyote. "Am wondering what kind of store this is." She believed in getting right to the point.

Coyote appreciated a good straight forward nature. Plus, the wolf totally almost recognized him. Which was better than most people.

"Good question. I sell powerful medicine here. And crap for tourists. But I guess that isn't you, after all, you have such a smart animal guide with you."

"Blind Seer," Firekeeper said firmly. "Is packmate, not guide. And we is not needing crap, yes."

Coyote nodded. "You are Wolf, too." He didn't sound terribly surprised. He clapped his hands. "Good trick! Can you be any other shapes?"

"Only this one," Firekeeper shook her head. "Being other shapes is work of sorcery where we is from."

Coyote snorted. "Sorcery is only a spooky name for medicine. But shape changing is powerful medicine. Most With Fires and Without Fires can't do it."

There were so many things in that statement that were unfamiliar to Firekeeper. So she latched on to the last one. "What is With Fires and Without Fires?"

Coyote sighed. The people here didn't know anything, did they. They were way worse than Samson ever was. He'd at least learned all of this once, before he ran away to the white world and forgot it.

He pointed to Firekeeper. "With Fires." He pointed to Blind Seer. "Without Fires." He pointed to himself. "Chief of Without Fires, creator of the Children of the Large Beaked Bird, and maker of the world."

Okay, so he might be bragging just a little.

Well, Firekeeper wasn't exactly from here, so of course she didn't know this stuff.

Her hand went to the small pouch on her neck almost protectively as Coyote named her With Fires. "Only chief of wolves is the Ones of the pack," she argued. "And they is my chief too, even if I am making fire."

She totally didn't get it, did she.

"Great Spirit named me Chief of Without Fires. All Without Fires, not just wolf. That means they have to listen to me."

Mostly.

"I'm a good chief. Ask anyone."

Anyone who liked Chiefs who didn't do much of anything. . . .

She totally didn't get it, no.

What Firekeeper is trying to say is, there is no Great Spirit or Chief of Without Fires where we come from, Blind Seer pointed out.

"This," Firekeeper agreed with a nod.

Coyote tilted his head as he listened.

"That's very sad for you. Who helps you with your medicine, then?"

"Doc," Firekeeper shrugged, not having an understanding of the word 'medicine' meaning anything other than something human doctors used.

"White people medicine." Coyote clearly didn't think much of that sort of thing. "Takes care of the body, not the spirit. Who takes care of your spirit?"

"A wolf is happy as long as their belly is full," Firekeeper said. It was pretty much what passed for Royal Wolf philosophy.

"True. But not exactly the same thing."

"Why not?" she was genuinely curious.

"What gives the wolf the strength to fill his belly, even when it hasn't been full for a long time?"

"The thought of the hunt," Firekeeper answered, oh-so-logically.

"But what makes the hunt fun?"

"The kill!" Firekeeper grinned fiercely.

Ooookay.

On the one hand, Coyote could see that. On the other . . . well, there were many more fun things he could think of.

"Right. I should have guessed."

Mmmm. Steamy.

Coyote did pretty much what I did yesterday. Which is nothing at all to speak of.

I miss it.
