Tether and Wade had gotten to a point where they were... calmer. Which is why Cable led both of them down to the store in the morning. Two guard dogs were better than one, and so on.

Plus he was fairly sure he could count on Wade to distract any customers should it be necessary. Or not. However, he did make sure he had a pair of earmuffs lying on the desk when he sat down. Those howls could make a man's brain rattle.

Wellspring Arms was open.

Ino was... tired. Like, a lot. But considering the way things fell out lately, if she wanted to talk to Cable-san then it had to be today, or wait until next week.

And, really, three weeks was a bit of a while to be sitting on one question.

"Cable-san?" Ino called, slipping inside and trying to make sure she didn't look too exhausted. "You busy?" Or something. She didn't know.

"Not really," Cable commented. He frowned down at his laptop. By the door, two individual canine heads perked up. "Ino."

"Hey, Tether," she said, wriggling her fingers invitingly while glancing askance at the other. "New pet, Cable-san?"

Ino hadn't been good about listening to radio lately.

"No," he replied, "That's--"

The dingo seemed to suddenly be struck by an impulse of energy-- and tackled Tether before he could as much as turn to face Ino.

"...Deadpool," Cable finished, dryly.

Ino blinked.

And inched around them to head for the desk. "He seems to be enjoying it, at least." Poor Tether.

"It builds character," he deadpanned, leaning back in his chair. "What's the problem?"

"Not a problem," she corrected automatically. "A question. Last week, in class, we talked about differences in battlefields, and I was curious about what you thought--if a spy, on a job, kills someone it's called murder, right? Do you think that them killing someone there is any different than killing someone in an open battle, in terms of is it murder or not?"

...Ino wasn't even sure if that had come out coherently or not, but she nonetheless looked expectantly at him.

That was a question that was blurry, if nothing else. "What you're asking is: is there a difference between killing someone who is aware and accepting of the risk of being killed, and killing someone who isn't?" Cable paused. "One way or another, someone winds up dead." Unless the situation required it, but he wasn't about to say that one aloud-- it'd be counterproductive, if nothing else. "The circumstances don't change that. So let's call a spade a spade."

"That's what I said," she said, wrinkling her nose a little. "That it's all murder, no matter what. And, I guess you'd put it that way? Though, chances are, if they're in a situation where they might be a target for a spy, then they're not entirely unaware of the possibility of it happening..."

"However," he continued, eying her, "That means you have to examine your motives in that light. If it's murder, then you'd better have a damn good reason to do it. And you have to live with it when you're done. Pointless loss of life in any situation is still just that-- pointless."

"It's not pointless if it's your job though," she said, frowning at him. "I mean, I don't think so anyway."

"The Nuremberg defense is never valid," he countered. "Simply saying you took orders doesn't justify someone's death at your hands."

"Nuremberg defense?" Poor Ino. "And if orders don't justify it, what does? Saying that you did it so they couldn't kill you?"

"'I was only following orders'," he cited. "That's the Nuremberg defense. But self-defense is one that works, yes. If you've got no other option left."

"Even if it's, like, um... preemptive self-defense?" Ino wondered, stifling a bit of a yawn with one hand. "Or is that a bad thing according to you too? And what other options would there be?"

"Because there's no other option left to you," he said, mildly, "Because your objective is more important, will save more lives in the long run. To protect information that'll cause people harm in the long run. Most of the time, killing someone doesn't wind up being the solution-- not in the long term."

"And what if killing someone, even if it's for bad reasons, is your order?" she wondered. "If it's the solution the client wants."

"You have to consider the consequences of what you're about to do," he said, "And act accordingly. You aren't your client."

"But do all murders have consequences that'd affect the one who did it?"

Ino really didn't understand how that'd be true.

"You're responsible for more than your own life, Ino," he said, "Every course of action you decide to take has consequences for the world you live in."

"I don't think I'm responsible for everyone's lives though," she said, considering that. "And I don't understand why I'm supposed to care either."

Two more days. Two more days. And then I can sleep for a week.
