Android's Dungeon, Thursday, 12/18

The card that had been forwarded to Sarah wasn't anything special, as Christmas cards went. There was a little cartoon of an ice skating penguin on the outside, and inside under the inscription it was signed, Merry Christmas! Ellie, Devon and Chuck in Ellie's round handwriting. Chuck had added only P.S. I miss you.

So there was absolutely no reason for Sarah -- who hated Christmas anyhow -- to keep looking at it like some teenager with a crush. She knew Chuck had let Ellie send it as part of their cover; she was, as far as that went, a friendly recent ex who had moved back to Maryland, and Chuck's sister was the type to send cards to everyone.

Shaking her head at her own foolishness, she went to her office to throw the card out, then hesitated a second and stored it in a desk drawer instead. If anyone asked, and no one would, she'd say she kept it as possible evidence, that it was important for her to track even the slightest communication with the Intersect.

She kept telling herself that lie as she closed her office door and went to man the register.

The Android's Dungeon was open.

"Do you sell capes?" Loki asked as soon as he'd cleared the front door. "Pink ones?"

Well, that was a distraction, and Sarah was grateful enough for it to smile at Loki.

"I don't think we do," she said brightly. "We aren't really a costume shop. Do I even want to ask why you want one?"

"Probably not but it's not for anything nefarious, I promise," he said sweetly. "I thought I'd try here first because superheroes are oftentimes associated with capes even if they remind me of a half dress."

"A half dress?" Sarah hadn't heard that expression before, and it took her a moment to work out what he meant. "And I didn't think it was anything nefarious. Nefarious and pink don't usually go together."

"Oh, nefarious and pink can go together in the right circumstance," he said. "Just gotta be the right circumstance. Anything can be made into something nefarious if you work hard enough."

Sarah tilted her chin up, considering that. He wasn't totally wrong, but ... "Bubble gum?" she couldn't stop herself from asking.

"Chew it up and then stick it in someone's hair," he said. "They'll either have to cut that shit out or hope they're shampoo is really fucking good."

That wasn't bad, actually. "Fair point," Sarah conceded. "Though my dad would have said gum in my hair meant somebody liked me."

"That's a shitty way to flirt," Loki decided. "There are better, less 'let's take you to the barbershop for your first buzz cut,' ways to flirt with a girl than that. Pushing a girl in the dirt would, at least, rank above gum in the hair."

"I could have lived my life without either one," Sarah decided. "But at least if I'm getting pushed in the dirt, there's a chance I can fight back."

"And I bet you're scrappy," he said, coming to lean against the front of the counter. "Brawler or trained?"

"When I was the right age for boys to push me in the dirt?" Sarah asked, not blinking. "Scrappy but tough."

"I can see it," he said, smiling at her reaction. "I was more of a brawler. Get dirty, get my fucking lip busted, and then knock someone's front tooth out. Nice way to make someone have a lisp."

"See, I would picture you as this perfect boy scout type who never got dirty," Sarah joked.

She couldn't keep a straight face on that one.

"Ha! That's a good one," he said, laughing himself. "The scouts wouldn't take me and, even if they had, I'd have stolen everyone else's patches and sold them for candy money or some shit. That's just how I roll."

Sarah thought her father would have wanted to adopt Loki, if he heard that one.

"See, I just never got to stay in one place long enough to be a scout," Sarah said, surprising herself a little with the admission. "I'm glad, though. I would have died of boredom trying to earn the merit badges."

"Some of the badges were just stupid anyway," Loki declared. "I don't need a fucking badge for someone to tell me I'm good at climbing a tree. I know I'm good at that. Give me something better than a goddamn badge."

Like...weaponry but that was a long time ago. Sigh.

"As I got older, I learned to respect badges a little more."

Just a little.

That was the kind of straight line Sarah almost didn't want to touch, and she raised an eyebrow at him. Really?

"I guess things like that happen when you grow up."

[OOC: SO sorry to vanish, work stuff then lunch.]

"Maybe," he said and shrugged one shoulder. He smiled at her non vocal reaction though. "Doesn't everyone respect the badge?"

"That depends on the badge," Sarah shrugged, deliberately ignoring any double meaning. "It's hard to put too much authority in a badge for climbing trees."

"Too true," he agreed with a laugh. "I've never had a badge myself. Well, I had one when I was just a kid, a fake one, that was plastic. Not the shiny real kind. I was always a little jealous of people with those."

Not he was not.

"I've never had a shiny one either," Sarah quibbled, which was technically true. Her CIA badge looked more like a passport. "Maybe if you asked really nicely down at the Trooper station, they'd let you hold one for the afternoon."

It passed her mind that the Freelance Police would probably love him, but she didn't think he needed that level of encouragement.

"Hey, I've got a friend or two down there, it might happen!" Loki said even though he knew there was no way in hell. Ever. "I'm sure I could get one by other means. I've got connections."

"You did tell me everything was on the Internet these days," Sarah pointed out. "I bet you could get a badge for cheap on eBay."

"You remember our conversations!" Loki said happily. "I didn't know I'd made that much of an impression on you, Sarah."

"I do pay some attention to you, Loki," Sarah said glibly, not sure how to take his apparent surprise. "So yes. I remember a few things."

"I was teasing," Loki said, snickering. "I'm not always here to mess with your head, you know."

Only sometimes.

"I know," Sarah said, though in fact she wasn't so sure. "Sometimes you're here looking for a cape." A pause. "A pink cape."

"They have their uses," he said and smiled. "Don't knock the cape until you try it. Apparently they make really good disguises."

He thought of adding something there TO mess with her head but held off.

"Maybe if you're going undercover to a vampire convention," Sarah scoffed. "I think in real life they'd just stand out, and get caught in things way too easily."

Sarah might have been reading ~~Watchmen~~Caretakers.

"You'd think," Loki said. "I was never one for disguises anyway save for the occasional fake mustache but that was more to fuck with people than anything. But, I guess disguises are sometimes needed."

He smiled pleasantly at her.

Sarah smiled pleasantly right back at him, more annoyed than anything. "I'm trying to picture you with a mustache," she said. "I think you'd look like an Irish cop."

"I usually stay away from facial hair," he said and rubbed his chin. "It grows in blond and makes it look like I've got dirt on my face."

"Not a good look for anyone," Sarah commented. "At least you don't have to walk around with 5 o'clock shadow?"

"And neither do you," he said and laughed. "It's a joke, I swear. No ulterior meaning behind it."

"Thanks, but I did notice you were joking that time," she protested with a chuckle. The mental image of herself with stubble was just too ridiculous.

A different thought occurred to her.

"Hey, subject change, but are you going to be around the next few weeks, or do you get to skip out on your tenants?"

"I'm planning on being around," he said. "Why, trying to plan a wild party under my nose?"

"Please, I have like five friends," Sarah said dismissively. (Though, granted, that was about four more than she'd ever had before.) "I just wanted to make sure I had someone to bother if my shower turned into eggnog again."

"The handywoman lives in apartment 7," Loki said. "But I think that was the island fucking with us. All I would have done was grabbed a glass and had a party in your apartment."

"You could have brought some water and helped me get it out of my hair," Sarah griped. "I smelled like eggnog all day. It's less fun than it sounds like."

"What makes you think I had water?" he asked, laughing. "I would have brought you vodka or something and then you would have really been pissed at me."

Sarah wrinkled her nose. "Yeah, flammable is not a good look for my hair. Plus, that's just a waste of alcohol."

[OOC: Vanishing until late shortly.]

"Good thing you didn't call me," he said, "or that's what you would have gotten. Eggnog and vodka, yummy."

Really I just did the OCD so I had a space to note how quickly canon Jossed me on Sarah's attitude toward Christmas. Ah, live canon, you're FUN.
