Freelance Police HQ [Monday]

Triela had had a long weekend. Hilshire's unhelpful letter had said he would be in contact again "soon", and she'd restlessly be waiting for "soon" to come.

It hadn't yet.

Work was a welcome distraction from all that so she'd actually shown up a little early. The tension in her shoulders relaxed ever so slightly as she went about her morning routine. It was good to have something to do.

Max wandered into the office, yawned, and scratched his butt. He blinked at Triela a few times, and then drew his gun. "Who are you and what are you doing in our office!?!?!" he demanded.

"I'll have you know that our secretary is a tall kid with spiky red hair," Sam contributed, drawing his own gun.

So ... at least they remembered one of their employees today. Out of the three. That was something.

"Did you know that breaking and entering is a crime?"

Just because they left the door unlocked didn't mean it wasn't breaking and entering.

Max bounced with glee. "OOH! OOH! Can we play 'Let's Eviscerate The Intruder'?!??! I LOVE that game!!!"

Very serious. But also too easily distracted to be a huge threat.

"No eviscerations today, Max," Sam said, in a very serious sort of tone. "Young lady, you are under arrest."

Police officers could arrest people.

Well, real police officers could. It rarely worked when they tried it.

This didn't stop them from trying.

Max waved his gun at her. "No, seriously, you're under arrest," he told her. "You have the right to remain silent. You have the right to... uh. Something something something. Look, if you don't come quietly, we get to shoot you, so can we just skip to that part?"

"Sure!" Sam said cheerfully. "Wouldn't be sporting if you didn't. Did you bring a gun, or do you need to borrow one from us?"

Sam glanced over at Max. He'd never tried putting it in those terms. Huh.

"Probably not," Sam hazarded. "You are resisting arrest, but I don't think we can shoot you on those grounds. Unless we were aiming to wound."

"Charge, charge..." Max looked at Sam and shrugged. Then he shrugged at Triela, too. "What would you like it to be? We're running a two-for-one special on felonies this week. Make it a big one and we'll give you 25% off!"

"That depends on the charge," Sam said helpfully. "Something like arson's going to cost a bit more than embezzlement. Embezzlement's no fun for anyone, though. Maybe we ought to swap those around, depending on what sort of impoverished hovel you're burning down."

"Well, driving with a busted taillight's always a good one..." Max mused. "Or armed robbery. Ooh! Ooh! Or jaywalking! Second-degree felony jaywalking! Or maybe, loitering with intent..."

"Yes," Sam said. "Loitering, with intent to jay-walk. Armed jaywalking. So, where were we? Right. You're under arrest, and anything you say can and will be used against you for embarrassing blackmail material sent to your friends and family. We'll need full names and addresses of your loved ones so we know who to send video clips."

"Really, I just meant a sort of general 'intent'," Max pointed out. "...HEY! Just because I'm doing something doesn't make it illegal!" He glared at Triela. "At least, not ALL of the time!. Besides, we're here to arrest YOU."

He shook an admonishing finger at her. "Which you are, you know. Under arrest, I mean."

"We have broken the law quite a bit lately," Sam said, holstering his gun. "How about we let ourselves off with a fine and a warning? We do know where we live, in case we ever do it again."

Max took a step closer to Triela and looked up at Sam with big, puppy-dog eyes. "It's Christmas, Sam!" he wibbled. "You're not going to arrest a guy on Christmas, are you? Especially not your best friend?"
