The Perk - Wednesday Late Morning

Veronica hadn't had any portal problems. She arrived in Fandom, went to the hotel to check in and was led to the room she and Dick would be sharing.

That would be when the problems started. They were in the Stripper Pole Suite. Which was bad enough on its own. But when coupled with the gift basket?

She needed a drink. Unfortunately it was too early to start drinking, so she headed for the Perk for a lot of coffee.

[V is here to meet someone specific, but she's also available if other folks want to chat with her before the party. Link may be considered NWS.]

After the announcement of the New Years' Eve event, Sarah had done some quick recon on the graduates to see if anyone was interesting, either as a threat (yes) or as ... well, something else. She wasn't surprised to find a potential recruit; her only surprise was how well-trained the girl already was. Law enforcement father, FBI internship, a couple of solid cases as a PI.

Almost falling over the blond on her way to get a morning mocha? Also a surprise, as was how really tiny this Veronica seemed to be.

Sarah took a seat nearby and put on a small, I'm-not-threatening-at-all smile. "You're Veronica Mars, right? Hi."

[OOC: SP warning in effect. Whee.]

"A federal agent," Sarah said, taking the microsecond to decide lying to a potential recruit was bad form. "Not the scary kind, though."

That was a matter of opinion.

"My name's Sarah. And you, I understand you've done some work for the FBI?"

Sarah glanced about to make sure the joint was free of squirrels and anyone listening too closely. It seemed to be, but she spoke softly anyhow.

"Of course," she nodded, holding her badge out under the table for Veronica to take if she wanted. "Walker and CIA. I'm on the island to look for recruits, and your name kind of jumped out of the databases." A pause and another uncomfortable look around. "Is there any other language you're comfortable in? The squirrels don't make things easy on me."

"I'm going to commit rodentcide some day," Sarah muttered as she took her badge back. It made her twitchy to have it out of her grasp. "Anyhow. Right. Safe now. So ... are you planning on going back to the FBI next summer, or are you done with law enforcement?"

"I'm sure you are, if what I saw about your work in Neptune and Fandom is typical for you," Sarah said. "You'd probably be their top agent within five years."

Her tone managed to suggest that was ... well, very nice, if you liked that kind of thing.

"Highlight reel?" Sarah asked, ticking it off on her fingers. "Solving your friend's murder, blowing the whistle on that terrorist they hired to teach chemistry, helping to solve the only murder in Fandom, not to mention that some of the whispers back in Neptune say you pretty much ran the show at your dad's PI shop. And you're barely 21."

The computers in the police station were very helpful.

"That's so sweet, and it looks like your dad was a good cop," Sarah said with a little smile, not sharing that her own father was a crook. Some things just weren't relevant.

"And, like I said, the FBI would be a great place for you, but I have to ask -- have you thought about options at the CIA at all?"

[OOC: Fleeing for a bit.]

Sarah gave a little nod. "Okay, just to lay out the differences -- and I apologize if this is sort of kindergarten stuff -- but, basically, FBI looks at national crime, CIA is more interested in international security issues. It's the difference between being a really good cop and being a spy." It was clear where Sarah's heart was in that equation, and she sounded almost sheepish as she added, "... I might be biased."

"I think you're worth testing and sending on a few trial missions," Sarah said carefully. Veronica had a very different background from Reno, so the process would be different, and more formal. "I didn't speak anything but English and a tiny bit of Spanish when I started my training. You can learn languages."

She drummed her fingers on the table. "What else would you like to know about it?"

Re: NFB

[identity profile] saveyoulater.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Psych screening, essays, a few dry run missions," Sarah explained. "Physical training, too. I won't lie, parts of it are intense, but nothing impossible."

She looked a little dubious at Veronica's other question. "Many agents do sign on in college, but if you'd rather wait two years, we can certainly stay in touch. We do pay for schooling if it's needed."

"My old partner graduated from Stanford right on time," Sarah said, skipping over some of the more complicated pieces of Bryce's story. "We're from different universes, so I don't know what the CIA program is like at Hearst, but I assume you could do the same."

Re: NFB

[identity profile] saveyoulater.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"I went to Harvard according to NBC.com, but I know a couple of really great people who ended up at Stanford," Sarah said. "Why did you pick Hearst?"

Re: NFB

"The databases let me down," Sarah said, frowning lightly. "But your dad ... this business isn't great for family ties."

It was only fair to warn her.

[OOC: *facepalm* all around/]

Re: NFB

[identity profile] saveyoulater.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Sarah shook her head. "You wouldn't have to cut him off completely. But you might be halfway across the globe and not be able to tell him what you're doing, if you were undercover."

Re: NFB

[identity profile] saveyoulater.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Do you end up out of contact a lot?"

It was a reasonable question.

Re: NFB

[identity profile] saveyoulater.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
That was a good answer, and Sarah relaxed a little. "Here's my proposal," she said. "I'm sure you didn't come back to Fandom to go on a job interview. Go back to UCLA, think about it, and we'll find a way to make contact for initial testing in a few weeks."

She handed over a business card. "And if you think of questions for me before then, call or write and ask. The email's secure from my end."

Re: NFB

[identity profile] saveyoulater.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's not something you want to just jump into," Sarah agreed. "And I am. It looks like it'll be a really good chance to get to meet people."

Re: NFB

[identity profile] saveyoulater.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"I have to admit," Sarah said, folding her arms, "I'm a little curious abotu Angel and Belthazor. I've never met a vampire or a demon."

That she knew of.

Re: NFB

[identity profile] saveyoulater.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"Convenient for you to keep an eye on them," Sarah noted. "Not that they aren't trustworthy, but..."

But demon and vampire.

"In three and a half years, I'll probably be able to hear someone's from outer space or can fly and not blink twice," Sarah said, resigned to this possibility. "Oh, before we go? I'm undercover on the island, so I'd rather you not mention that we talked."

Which she assumed Veronica knew without saying, but one thing she had learned was not to make assumptions.

"Seventeenth ... century," Sarah repeated. "Yeah, time travel's going to take me a while to get used to."

She eyed the barista. "Thanks. I'll talk to you later, though. Oh, and if you go with the FBI? They'll be lucky to have you."
