It really wasn't much warmer than it had been yesterday, but Sarah was in an immeasurably better mood. Her weekend social plans were taking shape nicely, and the activities of the night before made her feel actually useful for the first time in weeks.

She put a Madonna CD in the store CD player and bopped around as she finished putting away the action figures from yesterday. She didn't mind the work, but she was actually looking forward to going home and filing her weekly report at the end of the day.

Sarah offered a smile back at the girl. Hey, customers were pretty cool. "Let me know if you need help finding anything."

Mac nodded at that, "You wouldn't know anything about 9th Wonders, would you?" she asked after a moment. "My roommate, he's really into them, and his birthday was while I was away over Christmas, so..." She had nerd knowledge, but comics weren't really her area.

"I know the newest ones should be over on that rack and we might have a trade collection on that shelf," Sarah said, leaning over the counter to point. "it's not one I'm following. Is it any good?"

"If the number of copies I've seen laying around our room are anything to go by?" Mac said with a smirk. "I'd say 'yes'."

She shrugged, "Honestly, I do computers, not comics."

"We seem to sell a lot of trash, but I hope you're right about that 'yes,'" Sarah said, then gave the girl a second look. "What do you do with computers?"

"Most things," she replied easily. Which nicely dodged around the fact that a good half of those things weren't strictly legal. Or at all legal. Whatever. "Depends what people want, and how bored I get."

Oh, that was an interesting answer.

"I used to have a couple friends who worked the Nerd Herd desk at a Buy More," Sarah commented. "They said you could practically tell someone's whole life from what they had on their computer."

"Oh, you can," Mac agreed with a grin. The things she'd accidentally found out while trying to fix other people's computers. "People don't really think of that when they hand off their laptop to you to fix, or whatever. Pays to have good encryption."

"Yeah, I got them to upgrade my security so my laptop wasn't quite such an open book," Sarah agreed. "They said most off-the-shelf stuff had backdoors. Not that I have anything that exciting, but it can't hurt, right?"

Mac laughed. "Everyone has something," she said confidently. It was really just a case of looking. "So it definitely can't hurt."

"That might be," Sarah said, dropping the subject for the moment. "I'm Sarah, by the way. Did you find the comic you were looking for?"

"Mac," she told Sarah in return. "And I'm sure I can find something. You've got enough."

She leaned to curiously flick through a couple of comics in a nearby rack. "How long has this place been here?"

"Um, I'm not really sure," Sarah admitted. "I inherited it myself. I've been here since just before Halloween, though. Had you been by before?"

Mac shook her head. "Which is dumb, because it's not like I don't have way too much free time, and not enough to do with it."

"You know when you've been somewhere so long you don't really bother to explore anymore?" she didn't really wait for an answer. "Think I've got that."

"It is a reaaaallly small island," Sarah said ruefully. "I can't imagine being stuck here for all four years of high school.".

"By the time I graduate in May, it'll have been three and a half for me," Mac admitted. "Kinda ready for college now."

"I can't blame you. I was ready to get out of town when I graduated, and I'm not from a place this small," Sarah commiserated. "I think all seniors feel that way."

"To be honest, I was even more excited to get out of Neptune to come here," she said. "At least this place is interesting." And not full of overpriveledged 09'ers. But she left her distain for them unsaid.

"It's definitely usually not dull," Sarah agreed, curious. "And wait, the Neptune in California? That's funny, I ran into someone from there over New Years. Veronica Mars?"

It wasn't that small of a town, so Sarah didn't expect her to recognize the name. But stranger things had happened.

"Neptune, California," Mac confirmed, nodding. "And Veronica is a friend," she added with a smile. "We've known each other a pretty long time now."

"I only met her for a little bit, but I thought she was cool," Sarah commented, deciding to run Mac's name past Veronica and do a few other checks assuming that's OK OOCly. If the girl really was any good, on-island tech support that didn't work for Tony Stark might be very helpful.

"So, I take it you aren't dying to get back to Neptune for college?"

"She is," Mac said simply, and that's totally fine. "And no, not so much." She huffed a little laugh, "I'm trying to get waaay away from there, if possible. But I guess that depends on what scholarships I can get into."

"Definitely travel someplace different if you get the chance," Sarah said with a nod. "Seriously, I was in D.C. then L.A. then here the last few years. Everyplace you go is a new world."

A beat. "This one a little newer than most."

"Oh, tell me about it," Mac remarked with dry amusement. "And we haven't even been attacked by anything lately." Which was weird.

"From what everyone's told me, I'd be happy if it stayed that way," Sarah pretty much totally lied. "Were there really dinosaurs?"

Mac nodded, "And snowmonsters, and jello dragons, and aliens, and trolls, and..." She nodded simply, deciding the list was quite long enough already.

"It sounds," Sarah decided with a theatrical shudder, "like a very long three years. I'm just glad the shop has good locks."

"It's been... educational," Mac decided. "And in more ways than just 'I went to high school'."

"Hey, it's stories to tell your grandkids someday, right?" Sarah said cheerily. "And better than being slowly bored to death."
