Try as she might, Ino’s attention was scattered today as she attempted to sit still and actually get studying done on that American History book. Because seriously, it was like every time she went to work on it something else happened. Listening to last night’s radio just made her snicker about Ichigo, and she rolled her eyes about minding her own business.

If people came and talked to her, then it was her business. So there, stupid radio.

Trivial things were totally the way to go today, yes. Even though she kept, despite herself, glancing up at the ceiling and looking thoughtful.

It is -49 Celsius out right now (including the windchill).

It's so unfair that school kids don't have to go to school today, but I still have to work. Yup.

Looking a bit shabbily dressed and carrying a large gift basket of fruit, Lindsay entered the shop with a large grin on her face.

"Hi! Can you make sure the owner gets this?" She asked cheerfully.

The standard (canned) greeting Ino normally chirped at people when they came in was derailed by that.

"I can," she said, offering a smile that was very slightly dubious. "Is it a thank you or something?" Because Ino had figured that, you know, thanking Cable-san was a bit... like thanking someone for manipulating you. Which, sometimes, worked out for the better but still.

"We had a bit of a... misunderstanding the other day," Lindsay explained. "I thought this might mend a fence or two."

"Oh." Well then.

"He'll probably appreciate it," Ino offered, leaning forward in his chair. "Though he's pretty hard to really irritate, so I wouldn't worry 'bout it too much 'less the understanding was, like, life or death. I'm Ino, by the way."

"Lindsay Boxer," she said introducing herself. "Thank you! Make sure he knows it's from me."

"I will," she promised, figuring whatever, she could work with that. "Nice to meet you."

One look at the security cameras was all he'd needed.

Cable came down the stairs some time after Lindsay had left. "I'll be taking the basket, please."

"Hello, nice to see you too," she retorted, then flushed, staring down at her textbook. "But, sure, help yourself."

Since it was just, you know, sitting on the desk.

"Thanks."

He stalked over towards the desk, coming to a stop in front of the basket. His eyes narrowed, and he reached in to dig through it. "So how's business..."

That got her narrowing her eyes slightly in speculation as she glanced up from her book to watch him.

"Got made TA for U.S. History," she offered, still watching him... root around in the fruit basket and hefting her textbook up so he could see the title of it. "Which either means Tyler-sensei has great faith in my learning abilities, or just finds it funny, all things considered." And yet, she was still happy he'd asked.

He found what he was looking for. It was small and metallic and clearly mechanical. "Hm," Cable mused, and turned it over in his hand. "It'll be a good impulse to keep yourself updated."

"Pretty weird looking fruit," she commented, having a guess at what it was (she wasn't stupid after all) but not sure how else to say it. "And I think it's going to take a while to figure out all of it, honestly. There's a lot of stuff I read and then have to reread 'cause it's not sinking in."

He crushed the bug easily in the palm of his metal hand, tossing it to the floor. "That's why you've got the timespan of a class," Cable said, casually, "Repetition'll help."

Ino was going to have to sweep that up, so she sighed at his just... dumping it on the floor.

"True," she conceded, "and there's two teachers, so if I'm lucky I wind up trying to teach anything." Though, if she did, she had a Plan. Yes, already.

"Cable-san?" Ino asked, after a pause. "Do you think I've gotten stronger or weaker?" Way to ask open-ended questions Ino.

Cable tilted his head at the basket. "Hm," he said, reaching in, "Mango."

If you were going to be bugged, something good might as well come from it.

"I haven't seen you fight in a while," he said. "But I'd say you've been learning."

It was a sad fact that her little mental area designated 'Cable-san' got the note added to it that he seemed to like mangoes.

"Don't just mean physically," she said, closing her book. Though she meant that too.

"You've been working in the clinic for quite some time," he said, peering into the basket one more time before he mentally declared it bugless. "I'd say the experience helped."

"I've gotten faster at it." She tugged at her hair, wondering if he was just being dim or something.

"I mean, I don't know, mentally." Something like that.

He was still vaguely confused as to what she was asking. Cable rolled the mango in his hand, and checked the weight. "We usually grow with time," he said, "I don't think you've done any different..."

Sigh. Bananas. He'd have to get miss Boxer something.

That, that was the sound of her head lightly hitting the textbook.

"Is that clean?" she asked, pointing vaguely at the basket.

"I've gotten rid of the problem," he said. "Take what you'd like." With the mango in hand, he was heading back towards the stairs.

"I got put back on active duty," she called, leveling a scowl at her textbook.

Cable paused by the doorway. "You're getting missions?"

"Will be," she said. "Got notification on Sunday that I'm no longer considered on a training mission, so yeah. Missions."

After a year and a half of not having them.

He nodded once.

"Your specialties have changed," Cable observed, "It'll be a learning curve."

"Expanded," she corrected, almost automatically. "And hopefully to something more useful at my rank."

"I hope I can keep up with them," Ino confessed. "Chouji made Chuunin last exam, so it's just me who is still a Genin."

He watched her carefully from his spot in the doorway.

"Keep an open mind," Cable said, finally. He hoped she'd know what he meant by it.

She could guess.

"Genin teams don't get missions like that." But her team wasn't a Genin team anymore. "But I'll try."

"'Do or do not'," he deadpanned. After a pause, he added, "Good luck, Ino."

"Yes, Cable-san," she said, which didn't really answer anything, and got up to go and fetch the broom. "Thank you."

"See me when you're done," he said, vaguely, and turned back for the door.

Done what? Ino stared after him. Sweeping the floor?

That was vague even for him.

"Yes, Cable-san," she said, very dubiously.

"I'm not talking about the floor," he shot back, and then he made his way up the stairs.

It always helped being a telepath to keep people on their toes.

Her response to that was to do her best to tighten her mental shields.

"Geez," she muttered to the broom. "Geez."
