Yesterday had only been slightly confusing. After Madrox's message, which was really just par for the course for Madrox, three others had followed.

While he was pretty sure there was a logical explanation that involved the island being the island, he had to confess he now knew way more about the lives of certain people than he'd really wanted to.

"What do you mean, how's Weasel? What, do you expect me to be the mind reader now?"

"I'll take that," he said, and was suddenly incredibly grateful he'd put off matters more important than Gazprom until today.

The radio broadcast certainly explained a few things, and Sarah was an odd mix of relieved and embarrassed as she entered town hall. "Mayor Summers," she nodded. "I'm going to guess you didn't mean to call to threaten to drop me in the ocean."

If he had, well, that was why she was armed.

"No," Cable said, easily. The broadcast really had told him enough, as well, and he shifted in his seat to project easy, if currently unthreatening, authority. "That one was meant for Madrox."

"The Madrox who doesn't speak French?" Sarah asked, also relaxing a hair. "Wow. There must be some history there."

"That's one way of putting it," he said, with a wry smirk. "I'd say he has no sense of self-preservation."

"Probably not, if he's got you ready to throw him in a large body of water if he bothers you again," Sarah commented. "I don't know him."

"I find it's a threat that tends to smooth out most negotiation processes," Cable deadpanned. "He's a student." A very, very annoying student.

"It doesn't give the other party a lot of room to move," Sarah had to agree, though her voice was a little tight as she wondered how often he found himself making threats to students.

"Which is a good thing," he said, dryly. "He doesn't like to wait until caroling season..."

Sure, he could've called the cops for harassment, but that wasn't the way things were done back home. "Is there anything else I can help you with, miss Walker?"

"Nope, just wanted to tie that off," Sarah said. "I can be a little paranoid. Good to see you again, though."

His mouth twitched up for a smile that was somewhere between earnestly genuine and anything but. "The island's latest attack of insanity hasn't caught you too bad?"

Fandom made small talk pretty easy on him by comparison.

"Other than spending half the day yesterday worrying I'd somehow gotten on your bad side, no," Sarah claimed. "Oh, and I think my landlord and I need to talk when we can actually see each other. How bad was it for you?"

"I try not to answer my voicemails unless I know the origins," Cable provided, "Keeps things from getting messy."

Most of the time, he just had Irene screen them.

"It's amazing how quickly a few misplaced messages can freak out half the island," Sarah commented. "Screening's usually a good policy. It's just hard not to call people back when they're offering athletic sex."

Even if she'd needed to turn that one down.

"Not really."

There were no words that worked better to deal with a situation like that than 'I don't have time, I have to save the world.' Especially when grunted dismissively.

"It's the age-old question. 'If I answer, do I become part of the problem...?'" There might've been a joke hidden in there somewhere.

"I'm sure I passed along my share of confusion," Sarah admitted. "I'll call it a gift to the island and know better next time."

She was briefly horrified. "And now I'm convinced there'll be a next time."

"The island does like to repeat itself," he noted. "Take it as an Aesop. Bunker up next time they start calling." Cable should have Dale take that up in the official island safety protocols.

Even if he doubted people would listen. Again.

You got used to working around that.

"An Aesop?" Sarah didn't know the expression, though the meaning was clear enough. "Anyhow, I'll at least turn my phone off for 12 hours. Anyone who really needs me would find another way."

"Check your Greeks," he offered, "They're a lot less obtuse in person." He picked up his empty coffee cup and peered in it. "If we're lucky, it'll be smooth sailing for a few weeks..."

Sarah let the statement about Greeks passed with only a slightly raised eyebrow; it was still cryptic, but philosophy had never been her best subject anyhow.

"So that's what we hope for," she commented. "Luck and a couple good weeks."

"I'll be checking the invasion defenses come morning," Cable summarized, "Jinx."

"Jinxed either way," Sarah said, thinking how much she'd love a look at those invasion defenses sometime. Worth breaking cover? Probably not, but something to ask Dale about.

"At least you're on top of it ... and I think I'm going to head out on that incredibly cheerful note."

"I'm always 'on top of it'," Cable assured her, picking up his pen again. He thanked Askani once more for Robin and her ability to deal with the paperwork he really wasn't any good at. "Goodbye, miss Walker."

When she pings in!

After...yesterday, Robin was in a bit of a mood when she came in.

That, of course, changed, because she remembered about all the smugness.

So there was an oh so smug Robin at her desk today, humming happily.
