When Loki came out for his weekly shift, he immediately switched on the ~~Christmas~~ mood lights because he fucking liked them and he wasn't afraid to admit that. Which was odd. But, whatever. The lights were on and lighting up the lobby like the inside of some high college kid's room. All he needed now was a black light to complete the effect.

Once the lights were done, he propped himself up behind the desk, feet on the counter and magazine on his lap. Not that he was reading the magazine but he thought more people would stop and talk to him if he looked fucking busy rather than bored as hell.

...what? He didn't know where that thought had come from.

Anyway. He paged through the magazine, reading a line here and there and trying not to just toss the fucking piece of shit away. The only thing that stopped him was an article on easy recipes for the beginner. He stopped and read that one.

He's there, trying to look busy.

Sarah paused at his desk on the way to the gym. "You put the lights back on," she observed. "And good morning!"

"You're really fucking cheerful this morning," Loki said, looking up. "Get laid last night?"

Huh. That...huh.

"I wish, I would call Tony again if that wasn't sort of a business relationship," Sarah said, and blinked. A lot. "That .... wasn't where I thought that sentence was going."

"You can mix business and pleasure," Loki said, grinning a bit. "Sometimes, that makes things even better. Get the sexual tension going at work and fuck like bunnies at home."

"True, and it works as long as you don't get emotionally involved," Sarah commented. "Which was always my problem. Also? When you say that you're almost hot."

She definitely hadn't meant to say that.

"Oh, really?" Loki grinned at that, tossing the magazine aside. "Well, thank you. Tell me more about that."

Which was just mean to do but hey.

"I don't want to talk about Br - my boy problems or about how you aren't my type but sometimes ...." she shook it off. "What's wrong with me today?"

"I don't find anything wrong with you at all," Loki said, surprising himself. "I think we're all allowed to look. I look at you."

Which...what.

"In a fucking non creepy way. You're hot. I'd be an idiot and a moron not to look."

Seriously.

"Especially after you come back from the gym."

SERIOUSLY.

Sarah took a long moment to process that. Intellectually, she supposed she could have slapped him down, but what came out was, "Thank you, I guess."

What? It wasn't like she was shocked to hear she was hot.

Loki shifted uncomfortably, already contemplating taping his mouth shut.

"Yeah, well, whatever. It's not like I'm the only one who thinks that," he said. "Why are you up so early if you're not getting breakfast for someone you slept with?"

Because that was a good reason to get up in his mind.

"Because I wanted to tell you something, and because it's the best time to get to the gym before there's a line for the weights," Sarah answered. "Is everything about sex to you?"

"Please, I'm not that fucking one sided," he said and rolled his eyes. He just couldn't stop talking this morning. "There's nothing wrong with sex, Sarah. You're not afraid of it, are you?"

At least he could still tease.

"What'd you wanna tell me?"

"No, are you?" she threw back. "And I wanted to tell you I talked to Daisy and tonight's good with her for karaoke, if it's good for you. And then we wondered if you could sing Britney Spears."

"Fuck no," he said and shook his head. "If you're with the right person, then it's really fucking good. It's all a matter of choosing the right person. Don't have to talk in the morning or even stay the whole night but why be scared of something that fucking feels good between two people?"

Wow, that was a spiel.

"And no, I'm not singing Britney Spears. Fuck that. You two can do Britney Spears and I'll sit and wave money and cheer loudly. It is good with me. Like I'm stupid enough to say no to karaoke with hot women."

Fucking fuck. He blew out a breath and looked confused.

"I'm surprised the school hasn't recruited you to teach sex ed," Sarah commented dryly. "But yeah, with the right person it's amazing. I still sometimes miss how it was with my ex, and I might never see him again. But I'm such a relationship person, flings are just ... flings. Daisy says I'm 12 about it."

Speaking of spiels.

"... and that was about ten times as much information about my sex life as you probably ever wanted. This is weird, Loki."

"There are relationship opportunities around, aren't there?" Loki asked. "I mean, for such a small fucking island, there's a lot of fucking people here. And not all of them are as hot as me but still. It is nice to know that this island isn't different from anywhere else and girls still gossip about that stuff."

He grinned and then blinked.

"Can't seem to filter myself today. Everything is just coming out."

"Yeah, I just haven't found someone I really clicked with yet," Sarah said, not sounding too worried about the whole thing. "Plus, I'm still hung up on Chuck. And I didn't just say that name."

She was frowning.

"I'm good at resisting truth serum. This is weird."

"You did just say that name," he said, grinning again. "Who's Chuck? Ex-boyfriend? Secret lover?"

"Ex cover boyfriend who I spent Christmas Eve whining at you about," Sarah clarified, cheeks going red as she concentrated very, very hard on not saying the word Intersect.

She managed. Barely.

"He runs the Nerd Herd desk at a Buy More. I worked with him for a little over a year before I came here."

"You're hung up on a nerd!" Loki said, grinning. "Is he hotter than me?"

He was going to keep the questions flinging at her as long as he could. The less he had to talk, the better.

"Is he -- Depends on your taste. You're totally, completely different types," Sarah said, wondering why she was still having this conversation, why she couldn't seem to walk away. "He's really tall with dark curly hair. I'd say he's cuter and you're more handsome."

And, if he was playing that way, she had to add, "Are you hung up on anybody?"

"No." Which was true. He wasn't hung up on anyone but she was getting sly to the questions game. He wasn't pining or anything like that. He was just experiencing different things for a few people and he didn't know what the fuck to do with that. He'd been around Bartleby for the last fucking eternity after all. "Before coming here, I had one fucking friend and he turned out to be fucking insane. I don't get hung up on people."
