Around town, Saturday night

See, the detention that turned into a pool party was cool. Then there'd been the trip to Caritas that was juuuust a little weird. And Summersy. And after that she knew something had to be up, even if she didn't know what, so she was out on patrol again. She never ran into anything, but this kind of had the feeling one one of those times when people would run amok turning into their costumes or something, so she wanted to be out there just in case.

And if people were running amok because they'd turned into her costumes, she was going to kick the ass of whoever's party she didn't get invited to. Or maybe thank them.


[Yes, she's out again. Totes open. And no, she's not allowed to stake any temporary vampires.]

Louis watched her from the shadows. A girl. Out. Alone. Not wearing proper clothes.

She was in danger. In danger from him ... or worse.

"You should get someplace warm," he suggested.

Buffy turned at the voice, noting, "I don't usually take advice from guys hiding in shadows. Seen too many horror flicks."

"I don't know what that means," Louis revealed, stepping out of the shadows to show himself almost fully. "Is this better, then?"

It really was a lovely night for a good prowl, wasn't it? Looking for lovely ladies to bide his time with in the worst ways.

Of course, it wasn't every evening that he happened to notice a young lady who appeared to be on the prowl, herself.

The Vampire, Lestat, was most intrigued.

And that was why, with a smug grin on his lips, he found himself following behind her.

"Sure. So you hiding back there just to be creepy at people or what?" she asked. Guys who hid in shadows kind of set off a radar. Call her crazy.

Buffy'd sort of learned to tell when someone was behind her, which was why after a bit, even as she walked, she called, "Marco..."

"Polo," Lestat crooned from behind her, grinning a fangy sort of grin and lifting his hands to applaud. "Very well done! Rather observant, if I might say so."

He certainly said so.

[Even if she does end up staking him, Lestat won't die. Oh, Anne Rice and your stake-resistant vampires.]

Yes.

"I was out for a walk, to enjoy the night air," Louis answered. "You looked as if you might be lost."

Not that he had the first clue where he was.

"No," she said, like she was considering this. "Not even a little bit, really."

She shrugged, even looking cute about it. "What can I say. I have lots of experience getting followed by pale guys with bad teeth who like to walk around in the dark. You pick up a thing or two."

"Then I'll leave you to your stroll." And he was back in the shadows, ready to follow from a distance.

He would not forgive himself if Lestat took this girl.

"Oh? You do this on a regular basis, do you?" That was not a paranoid note in Lestat's voice, there. It was entirely possible that anyone listening was hearing things. Still and all, it simply wouldn't do for America to have a much larger vampire population that the one he was already aware of.

Things were so much more difficult to control, that way.

"You know, I can honestly say that this is a first, for me. Allow me to congratulate you for having such a unique hobby."

Buffy folded her arms over her chest and didn't move. "I know you're right there," she said. "You're not even trying."

It was somewhat difficult to conceal an axe on one's person, that one might look clandestine while attempting to patrol. It became more so if one had decided to carry two axes, that evening.

Very well; the element of surprise would be omitted from this night's activities.

It was then that Lizzy noticed the young girl, also walking the streets of town. Perhaps she was an innocent civilian, finding her way home. Perhaps she was an unholy abomination, hoping to lure in victims. Lizzy kept a watchful eye, trying to close the distance between them without alarming her.

Buffy was getting followed a lot tonight, so she wasn't surprised to notice another one. However, she was kind of surprised when she saw who it was. "Ms. Bennet, right?" she said, stopping and hoping she got the name right.

There was a deep sigh that seemed to hold all the sorrow in the world and a motion faster than normal human senses would be able to follow.

He was now in the shadows on the other side of the street.

"Less hobby, more job," Buffy answered. "Weird hours, horrible pay, absolutely no benefits, but wouldn't you know, I'm really good at it."

"Chasing vampires?" Lestat raised an eyebrow, his paranoia slipping back into intrigue entirely too easily. "And why in the world would someone like you have any need or desire to waste her time playing with someone like me?"

She knew what he was, clearly enough. There was no need to stand around, pretending to be anything less.

That was unexpected. Miss Bennet stopped long enough to offer the girl a proper curtsy.

"Indeed," she said easily. "You have the advantage of me, I fear, as I confess I cannot recall your name."

She looked into the shadows again, uncertainly, before her gaze found Buffy again. "Are you all right?"

"Um. Duh," she said. "So do you just wanna fight or should I talk myself up some more? Because I totally can."

"Buffy," she said, and shrugged. "I tend to hang around adults a lot, so I notice the teachers. And yeah, I'm totally fine. I... Is that an axe?"

"Fight?" And now he was laughing. "And ruin my good clothes? Why in the world should I want to fight you?"

Aside from the fact that really, he couldn't have someone running about who knew he was a vampire. That was really, really bad for his image in the bars and brothels.

"There is the whole thing where you don't get a choice in the matter," she mused, pulling a stake from somewhere in the vicinity of her back. "You're a vampire, I'm the slayer, union rules, you know how it is."

He was considering a trek out to the cemetery to count the tombstones. But his eye had caught the cracks in the sidewalk, and soon he was counting those.

"Oh, no, I'm afraid I don't," Lestat chuckled. Oh, she had a piece of wood! How... cute. "And what is it that you intend to do with that, exactly?"
