The York Gallery; Tuesday [ 02/10 ].
She didn't typically open on a Tuesday, but Charlotte was feeling a little restless and an awful lot like a slacker, so she went ahead and opened to do some work. After completing a sweep through the gallery to establish that everything was still nice and neat and in order, Charlotte found herself virtually riveted to the computer at the desk. She really couldn't help it. There were so many interesting things online!
No, not shoes! She was actually doing real work by scouting out hot topic exhibits, thank you very much.
And while he was going to do that, she was just going to take a quick moment to turn to her computer and just do a quick Google search on one Hans Lichtenstein. Just to make sure.

Jack entered the gallery, slick as a greased pig. "Well now, isn't this place just great," he said. |
| Charlotte was a little slow on the effort to pull her attention away from a review on an exhibit that featured old take-away coffee cups in its pieces when she heard someone come in, but, once she'd blinked her eyes from the screen to the reception area, she was all bright smiles and warmth. "Oh, thank you! I helped with the design myself; you should see the exhibit if you really want to see something, though." |
"Now that would be perfect," Jack said. "I'm sure a woman such as you has wonderful taste in art." |
Charlotte's smile went down at least a watt or so there. The compliments were nice, but she couldn't help being at least a little wary of them coming from someone she didn't know. "I'd hope so," she said, "considering how long I've been at it. I'm Charlotte York; I own this gallery, you see. And who might you be?" She would have gotten up to offer her hand, but that's where she got in trouble last time. |
"Jack Walker," he said. "I'm sorry, my daughter's spoken highly of you." |
"Your daughter?" Charlotte asked, her head tilting, going back through some lexicon of names in her head. Walker, Walker...a common name, so nothing was immediately jumping to her mind. |
"Sarah?" he said. "Lovely blond, eager owner of the comic shop?" |
"Oh!" Charlotte said after a moment when realization hit. Daisy's girlfriend! "Of course! How nice of you to come all this way to visit her! It's nice to meet you, Mister Walker." |
"Nice to meet you," Jack said. "I wish I was here solely to visit my daughter." |
"Other business?" |
"Oh, I don't want to bother you with that," Jack said. "I mean, unless you're interested in some Norman Rockwells." |
"I'd have to wonder," Charlotte pointed out with a slight chuckle, "what sort of business it would be if it involved Rockwells but you didn't want to bother the only gallery owner on the island with it." |
"Well, I'd hate for you think I only came here for business," Jack said with a chuckle. |
"Now that you've mentioned it, though..." Charlotte said, trailing off with the suggestion that there was no getting out of it. |
"Currently I'm representing a German millionaire, Hans Lichtenstein. Now, I don't want to air Mr. Lichtenstein's dirty laundry, but he has found himself in need of liquidating some of his assets for cash," Jack explained. "I find buyers for those assets. In this case, Norman Rockwell originals." |
"Yes," Charlotte said, "I realize. You don't work in the art business for over fifteen years without knowing that." |
"Of course not," Jack says. "You're a woman who knows her stuff. Which is why when I say that I'm offering two of them for five hundred thousand that it's a very good deal." |
Charlotte arched a bit of an eyebrow, but she was grinning a little. "Depends on which two they were." It all seemed quite a bit...fortuitous; this was the sort of thing you'd go to a big New York gallery for, but, at the same time, Charlotte was feeling like she really shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. He said he had the documents; as long as everything checked, she really shouldn't be questioning her luck. |
"If you'll give me a moment, I can return with all the papers needed," Jack said. "I believe you'll find they're some of his more beloved work, if not the most famous." |
"Good," Charlotte said with a smile. "I actually prefer to work with things a little on the less noted side of things." |
Jack gave her a smile. "Well then, looks like we'll be able to do business, I hope. If you'll excuse me, I'll be right back." He went to go fetch his case. |
"Oh, sure," Charlotte nodded. "Of course." |
And while he was going to do that, she was just going to take a quick moment to turn to her computer and just do a quick Google search on one Hans Lichtenstein. Just to make sure.
